Linden Lab doesn't want to pay for enough moderators to control the forums. They are trying an experiment at using unpaid labor to moderate the forums. People who have misused the forums for a long time, who have nothing useful to say about Second LIfe, but who love to attack people and break rules, are real upset. The best things I can think of to deal with this present sad state of affairs includes: 1. Report Bad Posts. Read the entire Forum Guidelines and Community Standards documents several times to start with, then read the forum pertinent parts as needed. When you report a bad post, don't couch it in terms of what you like or don't like, include quotes of the precise sections of the Community Standards and Forum Guidelines that are being violated by the bad posts. 2. Make Good Posts. Try as hard as you can to think of something productive and interesting to bring up as a thread topic, and post it. 3. Bump Good Posts. You can get some idea of posts that might be worth bumping by clicking on the rating field and thus sorting by rating. The rating used to be done by the users, many users love conflict, hatefulness, personal attacks, and other negative aspects of threads, so there will be a lot of high rated threads that shouldn't be bumped, but if you skip past those you will find threads that could use an additional comment. You shouldn't just say bump, you have to say something that seems like a real response, but it can just be an agreement or a question. If you bump and old good thread and get a comment about necroposting, ignore it. Old posts are available for response. 4. Never respond to a bad, stupid, hateful, dimwitted, off topic or otherwise worthless post, not even to provide what you might think is a perfect rebuttal to some useless and unproductive thread. Most of the people making such threads and posts are either not bright enough to respond to clear thinking or are don't really care about the contents of their posts one way or another, they are just trying to make trouble and misery. Don't waste your time with a thread like this. Ive seen them before, and the trolls eat them for dinner. As exemplified by the first reply to your thread, the trolls do not waste anytime. They will all be here in full blast in no time like cancer. The interesting thing here is, you effectivly made your own prediction come true. You couldn't have worded a statement better to provoke a reaction if your life depended on it. This is what is known as "troll-baiting", and is generally considered to actually be lower than trolling on the great pyramid of nettiquete. That said, how is it trolling when someone else complains, insults, and belittles people and contributes nothing positive to a thread, but not when you do it? _____________________

Excellent advice Sorry, but most of this advice doesn't work. When trolls post, I simply troll them back. Their normal reaction these idiots make is to try to me out to be the troll/baiter or make comments like " this is so funny" or "I've never laughed so hard in my life". These are simply invalidation outlets. Eventually they throw the "I'm putting you on my ignore list" tantrum. Then they move on to troll somebody else. Trolls post with the purpose of putting others down. Psychologists have coined the term invalidation which I would think to be suitable. It runs rampant in our society. Sometimes we don't know when it is happening to us, and sometimes we don't know when we are doing it to others. Anything meant to make others feel bad doesn't belong in a discussion. Trolls start off by invalidating your ideas/legit discussion with rude comments. When lots of trolls jump in like hyenas on a dead elephant, they will then invalidate your legit ideas by calling it troll bait. They will invalidate you as well for being to sensitive and not being able to take a joke. Just becuase you will not stand for invalidation does not mean that you cannot take a decent joke that is not targeted at a person. Like laughing hyenas, they will build on eachother's invalidations. They will put you down for calling them trolls. They will use sarcasm to invalidate you. They will say things like "Oh I said something that hurt his feelings. I must be invalidating him." <-That is an invalidation. They will laugh at you. They will bait you. They will put you down with images, snide remarks, and sarcasm. Very rearely will they outright call you names. Their methods are usually more suttle. The problem with your advice is that mods do squat. They usually can't even recognize invalidation when they see it. Some are guilty of it themselves. Legitimate posters really cannot participate in this forum because there really is no point in sifting through all the trolling simply to find the posts that contain decent discussion. I have tried all of your ideas. I have gone through dozens of threads without making any comment, and reporting some of the troll posts in them. Mods do sqat. If you will let the trolls know what you are doing, those idiots will invalidate you for wasting the mods time. The best thing we can do is give them a taste of their own trolling. Troll them back. Put them down. Invalidate them. Bait them. Like a pack of laughing hyenas, they will continue to laugh and invalidate and come back with more of their stupidity. In turn you can just keep them going until they burn in their own flames. With any luck, the mods will catch on to what is going on, and actually start taking some action. If legit posters get violations or banned for trolling the trolls, so be it. The most important thing to remember is that they will invalidate you for anything under the sun. They will invalidate this post. They will invaldiate me for posting this. They will invalidate me whatever dumb rhyme or reason they might give themselves. The real reason is that they are simply trolls with no ability to control themselves. Take this moron for example.
