From: Hugsy Penguin It's odd that we call some parts of the map "continents" when, in the real world, they are tiny. If the real world was the size of SL, the RL continents would be smaller than the SL ones. To scale, on the asteroid-sized planet "Agni", they're continents.

Dammit! I was going to pull out the big guns, and quote from "Snow Crash", but I can't find my copy! I can find Zodiac, Big U, Interface, The Baroque Cycle, et al., but not Snow Crash.
Can anyone find the definition from Snow Crash as to the size of the Metaverse? It is in the first explanation, as well as described during the chase where Hiro and Raven ride Cubey's bikes across the Metaverse at astounding speeds.
And that makes me so want to see continents less connected, allowing for empty, dare I say, possibly pre-rendered lands to drive or boat through. Which, again, makes me think of "Adopt a sim", where the grid is made more sparse, but certain artistic and tech groups can adopt connecting sims, allowing for prerendered, non-real time land. That would allow people to use vehicles more realistically between areas. And even then, how about no TP between sparse continents? Then we could have bullet trains (free) as a fun option to get between places?
I'm babbling...

Make *all* the sea part of some outscale sparse sims, so you can step into the void and be somewhere in an Ocean Sim, then turn around and bop back to the original sim again. The Ocean Sim(s) would return anything that an avatar isn't sitting on after 5 minutes, so they wouldn't have to deal with gobs of prims and collisions and stuff, and island owners could "opt in" to the Oceans if they want.

From: Postmark Jensen Can anyone find the definition from Snow Crash as to the size of the Metaverse? This should do. Port 127 is as far from Port 0 as you can get... The Metaverse was built with plenty of room to expand. Almost all of the development is within two or three Express Ports - five hundred kilometers or so - of Downtown. Port 127 is twenty thousand miles away. It's a sphere with a 40,000 mile diameter. The combination of "kilometers" and "miles" in this paragraph is amusing. Still, even if it's 40,000 kilometers in diameter, that's pretty big. (making it a sphere was stupid, the math's much simpler if you make it a torus)

Rock on! I understand why LL would want to stay away from something like pre-rendered lands, but I think it would be a great feature while they work update netcode, rendering , and physics.
