From: Six Kennedy Shoes from MOST places are usually set to 0, it would be impossibly time consuming, prim resource eating and just plain nuts to make shoes for each and every slider point of the avatar. When looking at feet you really dont notice a difference in the size of them be they size 20 or 0, but if your wearing a size 20 foot in a size 0 shoe .. ur foots gonna bust out all over the place so best bet is making your feet size 0.
Prim hair is really hard to just get a fit straight from the shelf Head size is just one MINOR part of how prim hair looks on different heads, how long your forehead is , how much it sticks out, whether your eggshaped or not.. even the lenghth of your neck .. it all will affect how prim hair will fit. Theres not like standar for that since we all want to look different . I am a total spaz who puts 3 different sizes in each hair pack just to kind of help out but even that doesnt guarentee someone a totally perfect fit. I made my small size molded after my size 30 head and soon realized that most people will end up having to adjust that. So I decided to add in a size large.. I use the noob female avatar size 65 head and head shape for that size. I like doing this because someone thats a total nooooob and hasnt even changed their head sliders at all yet are able to come in and wear it right off the shelf with no adjustment needed. Ive more recently added a size medium to please the people with the size 50 heads. Hopefully it all makes resizing hair a little less traumatic for most.
(Linden lifestyles posted an awesome article on how to resize and adjust your prim hair .. I dont have the link handy ( i keep it on a notecard in world ) but someone here may have that link. )
Prim skirts use to be satan to me and I would never buy outfits with them but now I pretty much only wear prim skirts now that I've taken the time to work out adjusting them properly.
Avatar Mesh Skirts can be quite scary but there are alot of designers that figured out a way to make em' hot even if you dont set your bootay to 0.
You really just have to make the best of everything you got lol.. My boyfriend showed me pictures what things were like in sl along time ago when he started playing and ACKK.. SL fashion has come alonggggggg way baby !!! LOL and I'm sure it will only continue to get better ! Yeah, I had seen that the posters for shoes say fits 0, but to tell you the truth I didn' think much on it. I just assumed (assumption is the root of all evil) that the shoes, clothes, and hair, would be like a skin it would simply wrap around any given size. Guess thats what I get for not taking the time to think on it... lol ahem.. have to say i like your hair.. lol i think i own about 6 packs at least.

I agree with you on a lot of these points... From: someone Making the rear end look comicly huge while wearing a dress or skirt. I've pretty much made peace with the skirt mesh design, since I like a little curve there, but it is annoying. Flex prim skirts can be adjusted to minimize the effect. From: someone Shoes: It greatly greatly upsets me to buy shoes and have them not fit my feet? I hear ya! This is why I don't wear prim shoes very often... almost all of them are made for a size 0 foot, and my feet look silly when they're that tiny. I have a few that are modable, so I can stretch them, and I was thrilled to find that Fallingwater's men's biker boots fit my size-35 feet perfectly and don't look huge. If shoes are size-0 and not modifyable, I generally don't buy them. I spend a lot of time barefoot, and I hate having to keep another shape just for shoes and switch all the time. From: someone Of course I like obscenely low riding pants, but not all of the time.. I do not want my but crack showing all of the time.. Agreed! Low riding pants are okay some of the time, but not *all* the time. Some of my current favorites are jeans from Nyte 'n' Day and Mischief, they look good and aren't cut too low. Mischief's Demise Denims totally rock. From: someone Also... the fact that I put the hair on, and a lock of it is going through my body?!??! Yeah, that's a pain... I usually wear shorter hair for that reason. Although, just last night I bought some long straight flexy hair by Kin Keiko, and I'm totally in love with it....

This thread has been very interesting to read and very informative... Thanks for posting! For the skirt thing: I honestly like the fact that most skirts give a nice boost to the rear end I understand its mostly a matter of opinion but I think it gives the idea that yes, there is some shape underneath all that clothing LOL... My only concern with skirts is when walking or dancing, the avatars legs stick out of the mesh and its just not pretty but its something to deal with to get that tight fitting look i guess As for the hair: I have purchased soooooo many different hair styles and I used to change them all pretty regularly until I found an awesome style at Simone's called Liz I believe... Now I really don't change it much anymore One thing I would personally like to see: More Jacket length shirts... I wear a cute little furry avatar that has a very short torso and the normal length shirts just don't go long enough and looks kinda silly on her. The jacket length shirts look more like a standard shirt and if anyone knows any good places that do that please point me in that direction! LOL

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu Yeah, I had seen that the posters for shoes say fits 0, but to tell you the truth I didn' think much on it. I just assumed (assumption is the root of all evil) that the shoes, clothes, and hair, would be like a skin it would simply wrap around any given size. They all do. All shoes and clothes and things that are accessible in the appearance window conform to you ^^. But prims in shoes, hair, skirts etc have to be adjusted manually. They were intended for building, not clothing, and fashion has evolved around them quite a great deal... but they were never meant for that initially. Some vendors sell shoes in size 0 and size 10 versions, but you have to look around. if you're not going to buy a lot of shoes, take the time to resize, but if you're going to be buying a loooot of shoes, it's just easier to give in and shrink your feet. The same goes with your head and occasionally your butt. ^^

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu 1. T-shirts: I really do not like the fact there is a fold in the middle of my chest with the stupid tshirt.. wth.. If anyone has seen a woman in a tshirt you know it just simply lays across..
I hate that too. And if I put a logo there it ends up very distorted. From: VolatileWhimsy Bu 2. Dress/Skirt: I know this is no fault of the designer but of Second Life and their great dislike obviously for women.. Making the rear end look comicly huge while wearing a dress or skirt. Bubble butt! I made a second copy of my avatar shape with the butt sliders cranked down to fix this. Just switch back and forth depending on what you're wearing. From: VolatileWhimsy Bu 3. Shoes: It greatly greatly upsets me to buy shoes and have them not fit my feet? Is this the poor craftmanship of the designer or Second Life making my life hell? Okay, I just have to say: it's weird for designers to CONSTANTLY make shoes for size 0 feet. Reminds me of ancient Chinese nobelwomen having their feet broken and bound to keep them tiny. In RL someone with those proportions would fall over. I don't get it. I make shoes for size 19 feets. Again, though, I have a backup shape with size 0 feet just for other people's prim shoes. From: VolatileWhimsy Bu 4. Pants: Of course I like obscenely low riding pants, but not all of the time.. I do not want my but crack showing all of the time.. maybe I am being prudish, but it just makes me think of plumbers I made medium-waisted basic jeans. Under the OPIUM Everyday line. It was bothering me as well. I like 'em low in the front in RL, but don't want people to be able to throw pennies down my crack as I'm walking. From: VolatileWhimsy Bu 5. Flexi Hair: What a wonderful design.. But why in the hell would you designers make it where the hair from underneath the top blows up at a 90 degree angel from my head? Do you have any idea how horrible that looks? It is very frustrating to me... Also... the fact that I put the hair on, and a lock of it is going through my body?!??! poor craftmanship i think Yeah. I switched to an updo because of this. I found the long styles in flexi, unless they were ponytails, tended to have a non-flexi section that acted weird when there was wind or movement. Sucks, because I like long hair.

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu hmm Ok, so it is the attachement site that is the problem. When you say size 50 head and size 65 head, are you meaning in height?
Thank you thank you for that read, i am going to read it now.. lol i couldn't figure out one way or another on the template in photoshop.. My own head size is just under size 50 and i think 50 is a good average head size. Generally for most people changing your head size a little to make hair fit better does not change your appearance at all and is much easier for most than wrestling the prims. If you are going to edit hair can i please ask you to ALWAYS take a copy of the hair first. The few problems I hear from people with the hair I make are those who have wrestled the prim, messed up and didn't take a copy. As Jackal explained the prim disappearing into the body sometimes is a SL design quirk. Most people just ignore that but if it really bugs you then a nice ponytail or shortie style would work best for you. When I'm making hair I do try to place it as well as I can but as soon as an avatar changes stance or gets to grips with peoples stances in animation overrider, the hair will bleed into the avatar worse in some postions than others and no av is static all the time. Also with flexi you have the added problem of the wind blowing the hair into you if the wind is behind you and you might not want to stand facing the wind all the time. If you don't like the hair fluttering in the wind, because the hair is mod you can change or lower this setting if you prefer in the features tab of the edit menu in your right click pie. I usually use wind settings between 0.3-5 but if you wanted a tiny wind movement you could try 0.1 or 0.05.

hmm i had a thought on the t shirt problem. now someone with some nice skill in texture mapping could texture the lines in (or the logo in such a way...) so that once conforming to the body shape, looks like what a shirt would acually look like. the slight problem here is that the shirt is still conformed to the body so it wouldent work at strange angles (like directly above or below)
i myself could not do this though as i do not know the first thing about texturing clothes XD

Personally, I just adjust whatever body part I need to for whatever piece of clothing. The only thing that doesn't change is my feet (the standard size 0). They seem to look bigger with the shoes on anyway.

What about shorts I went looking for shorts the other day and all I could find were booty shorts. I just wanted some regular shorts where everything wasn't hanging out and couldn't find any. Anyone knows where to look tell me lol.

Men get even less
07-26-2006 13:02
If you're a female, even with all the problems mentioned by the op, consider yourself extremely lucky as the men get next to nothing.
SL caters strictly to the females. For men, we barely get anything and the items we do get are simply repeated shop after shop.
And don't talk about shoes. The shoes here are a joke. Recently, I purchased a pair of boots and when I proceeded to wear them, they look like clown shoes. They were gigantic. I called the shops owner who said there was nothing he could do to fix the size so he refunded my L back. This is a common problem all the way downthe line of shops. I've seen guys wear shoes that look ridiculously large but there isn't much they can do.
Men who like to dress nice have to shop twice and more as much as women and still, we're lucky if we find what we need. And then usually never all in one shop either.
I wish we could get a third of the choices of what females get.

For more modest clothing defintly check out Nylon Outfitters and Fashionably Dead. Also Starely Therian of Celestial Studios makes great "sexy" but I'm fully dressed stuff. Her jeans are great. Low in the front but not in the back. Also don't forget Torrid Midnight. LOVE LOVE her Funk outfit. Dresses hands down Dazzle has the best stuff. I am a bit bigger in the booty area and I refuse to change my shape to conform to what is "in". Dazzle makes stuff to fit women. She also has some really nice casual long skirts. Which has been really hard for me to find. Also even with the whole skirt mesh issues Pixel Dolls is also another great dress maker. She has some really well done mesh dresses as well as prim stuff. Shoes I live in my Sentou Style Breakers. I think McWheelie left the game while I was on a break but I believe Starley still has the shoes in her shop. Totally love my boots from Fallingwater Cellardoor. I recently picked up some really cute shoes from Lyra Muse and you can find her stuff at Dazzle as well. And I'm gonna go out on a limb and promote my friend Kaela Lulu for shoes. She's just getting started but her stuff is really nice. You can find her stuff at Body and Sole. For hair I'm totally addicted to ETD. I'm kinda glad Elika is a semi break, she use to release every weekend, or I'd seriously be broke. I also wear styles from Starley, Kin Keiko, Nylon when I want something a bit different, and HoseQueen. 1. The shirt thing drives me nuts but I've gotten use to it. 2. If it wasn't for those peeps I mentiond for dresses I wouldn't wear any. Up until recently I stayed in jeans cause I couldn't find anything I liked. 3. Shoe size is the only thing I've changed on myself to fit fashion. I'm a size 10 in real life and can never find shoes so I refused to let that be the case in my Second Life. If it wasn't for my girlfriend Hethr I'd probably never buy anything. I keep telling that girl she needs to be a personal shopper. I just came back to SL after a 8 month break so reading the mags (PXP, Second Style, and Linden Lifestyles) has helped me a great deal in getting back into the fashion scene. Oo and before I forget, shorts. I'm not sure if they are still up in her store but Vee Grace has some nice shorts. She left the game also but her store still lives in Celestial City. *sorry this post is so long I got a bit carried away. And if you need landmarks let me know and I'll drop you some.*

From: Jack Harker Women's prim shoes are designed to fit size zero feet. I think that if you do that you'll discover that the shoes you have fit. Not from my experience. With foot size set to 0, when I position the shoe to be in proper position for my toe, the anklestrap prim goes through my leg. This happens on shoes from different designers, and accounts for my going barefoot most of the time. The expedient approach would be to get shoes that don't have ankle strap prims, but I like them.

One thing I definitely noticed is that they didn't really plan much on having fat characters--the belly adjustment starts at the bellybutton instead of right below the breasts (like where people's bellies in RL usually start), and if you set the belly adjustment anything beyond 25, it looks like a horizontal board sticking out right at the bellybutton level and continues down to the crotch. The only way to get a realistic looking belly is through prims. Then, to top that off, because they make the belly adjustment actually someone's crotch, the only way to get pants to fit under a belly is by basically custom-making almost-crotchless pants. As far as men's clothing, there really isn't a huge selection. Before I started making my own clothing, I sometimes went to women's shops to find things that were unisex. I'm thankful that it's really easy to make clothing--I've gotta give the Lindens a thumbs up for the ease of making clothing.

I wish we could get a third of the choices of what females get. Try fallingwater cellardoor for male shoes and boots, she has some excellent ones. There were also some amazing ones on the exchange forum recently someone showed me. I have a reasonable range of flexi prim hair for men, it isn't as extensive as our female line but we are working on it and we try. I named my store Adam n Eve and fromt he beginning I have tried to stick the policy of making one for the girls, then one for the guys when I can in many of my products but guys aren't always as adventurous as girls so as a business practise it isn't always sensible. In my shop I have hair, clothes and skins for men, also 3 male shapes that I use for modelling that I also sell because they are handsome! We have a tuxedo and prim collars with flexi priim bow ties and some male jewellery. We have a wide range of costume clothes but also many that work in as casuals, also some shirts which have a free pair of jeans int he pack with them. I have a couple of male shoes but not many, and often I will put some shoes or sandals with a themed male outfit. I don't feel I'm good enough at making shoes to do them extensively and made them initially for my partner Damen who couldn't find any he liked. However I do think we have something of most things you might want in one store so maybe you just need to find us or other stores like us and shop around more. I also know Barnesworth Anubis is an excellent male designer, and I believe he does shoes. As to items being repeated, our store has a flexi prim grass skirt for men, bet you don't get that repeated too often!
