So you pull out of the driveway of your grand estate in your Shadow, fanatically loyal famiglia at your side.

Your daughters are beautiful, but your wife puts them to shame.

She can create a new designer shirt for you for three cents, or mow down any would-be assailants with a Seburo, and make prim banana muffins - as many as you want.

All this before she brings home the bacon at a modeling-agency. Then she fries it up in a pan in the privacy of your own flying home.

All the while, your business makes tax-free $L 24/7 while you party like it's 1999 (pre internet-bubble collapse).

Comfortable and satisfied, you log out of your idyllic dynasty setting, and log in as your alt.

Rough, wild, and a little dangerous, you hit the casinos and clubs. You are hot tonight - the crowd goes wild as you win and win again.

A lady on the dance floor catches your eye, and soon you are on the balcony looking at the stars.

One thing leads to another, and you find yourself in her skybox. After some wild moments of abandon, you both lie back, and talk about 'life'.

She mentions she is really good at making banana muffins. ZOMG, It's your second life wife's alt! You both share a good laugh, and the sun sets on yet another perfect day.

So the question is: will you ever succeed in your first life, as much as you have in your second?

Honest answers, please! I'm really wondering about the fact of the matter.

A slightly more worrying question is.. "If you fail in SL, does that mean you're going to fail in RL too?"

It's a thing I mentioned to a friend a while back. Failing in a "dream world" has the potential to be pretty devastating to the RL person, especially when your protective excuses are stripped away.

possibilities

possibly? yes.
probably? no.

i'm continually trying to figure out a way to succeed in RL to meet my wildest dreams. (beyond them is nigh impossible, as they're pretty wild!) whether it's a cross-pollination of SL and RL to acheive that is a matter of personal debate, but it could happen.. not anytime soon, but maybe someday.

one main force in accomplishing RL "success" is to earn a living by doing something you enjoy. necessity forces us into situation where we're miserable with our means of existance, but if you "grab the bull by the horns" and charge head-long into a future you design for yourself, it can go a long way to said success.

it may be a lot more challenging than "just getting by", but the rewards are immeasurable. you may not end up with a palatial estate with Starax sculptures and Damani roadsters, but i believe success in RL is measured less by material possesions than by internal happiness. (granted, having a Starax sculpture replicated in RL and sitting somewhere upon your property would be pretty awesome)

in short: not right now by any means, but i'll continue to try to reach that point in my lifetime. if i never reach it, then i'll die trying.. but i'll still be satisfied that i didn't let life just pass me by.

I guess that would depend upon what definition of success you are using.

SL: I've been a good person mostly, or have tried to be, have made some good friends, have done some fun things and have tried to help some folks along the way.

RL: I've been a good person mostly, or have tried to be, have made some good friends, have been blessed with a wonderful son, have done some fun things and have tried to help some folks along the way.

So I guess my RL is a success in some ways, though not in others. The same can certainly be said of my SL.

I have to agree with David there, SL I have a wonderful husband, a nice house, and good freinds. RL I have a decent apartment, am madly in love with the same guy as SL, 2 great little boys, and good friends. There are part of both my SL and my RL I don't like but I can either fix them or learn to live with them, rather than regretting them.

Heh! I probably won't achieve worldwide fame, or be a part of history to the extent that I am the one who *writes* it... but who cares. Anyone with half a brain can make enough money to lead a reasonably comfortable and happy life.

I'll never have 26 hectares of buildable, prime quality, waterfront land in RL :(

My FL is pretty much exactly like my SL, I try to take care of myself, educate my brain, and create as much as possible.

Funny you should ask this question because I have not been "in world" much because I have been working on my RL world to make it like my SL life world.

I decided that all the time that I spent creating plants in SL, I should be spending creating REAL plants once again in RL and now I have this wonderful area in front of my house once again with bonsai trees and orchids and bromeliads! I go out every Saturday and Sunday and spend at least two hours working on them. That's four hours I used to spend in SL.

I guess the hurricanes changed my perspective and maybe moving did too, but I decided I needed to spend more time behind a shovel than a key board for awhile. Both are important expressions of artistic endeavor but right now I just need to focus on RL more.

Life is short, why not have them both be beautiful?

Is that really asking too much??? :p

*grins* I feel like I should be paying for product placement. For what it's worth, I'm working on it :)

I picked up one of these 2nd hand from ebay:

And I used my SL money to buy a mustang, story here :D

I would so be a recluse who did nothing but make nifty hitech gadgets in RL. Sadly, no.

Considering that business in Second Life is a hobby, I'd say yes. In comparison, eBaying antiques or day trading stocks for a small profit also requires no more than a little operating expense, a steady modicum of time, and the mentality to consider the whole operation entertaining.

If true accounting practices were imposed on most Second Life endeavours, they'd operate at a dismal loss. We just choose to not see it that way.

That's really awesome, Rose. :)

Me, yeah, I'm succeeding in first life. There's something really nice about hitting 30 (for me, almost 3 years ago) and looking at my life and thinking "yep, going reeeeal good". :)

I mean, I pay more to Second Life in rent for my virtual land than I do for my apartment in First Life. And no, I don't live with my parental units. :D How cool is that?

I think my RL has far exceeded anything that Second Life can offer and far as I am concerned the real world will always win. Everything you described is make beieve. You can not touch it, taste it, feel it, or put it in your pocket and walk away with it. It is only there as long as Phillip does not throw the off switch. Let's say by some stroke of luck one my endevors in Second Life really took off. I own my chain of islands and Anshe Chung is hitting me up for spare change. It still woule pale to the things i have in the real world. A stable family life, loving children, respect of my peers and community. In material goods I am notl rich but I own the roof over my head and it sits in pleasant surroundings. I think sitting on my deck in the real word. watching the real water go by and feeling the warmth of the real sun on my face is a sign that real life is more sucessful than make believe life.

Real Life 1
Second life 0

Btw I make great banana muffis and you can actually eat mine :)
