To me the main grid resembles a land fill site. Period. It always has and always will. Of course there's some "good" ( relative ? ) stuff, but it's far and few between. Using a grid system anthill approach that attempts to mimic RL landmass and piles people on top of each other was a big mistake from an aesthetic POV. Some preach tolerance, others complain, but there's nothing you can do about it apart from own enough land to seperate yourself from the landfill, buy a private island or lobby SL to add a relatively simple cure ...

My My MY! Ugly, Hmnnnnnn? And what happens when a person walks up to YOU and tells YOU that YOUR excellent build is a piece 'o crap and builds an 80 meter wall to defend himself from it? Not going to happen to you? Well, guess what: It already HAS happened to me. Twice. Just because you don't like what someone else does. Just because MOST OF YOU don't like it, does not make you all right. Ever. You are talking about YOUR tastes in builds. I personally have trouble with some builds other's rave about. I myself can't stand what I call BOX BUILDS (I mortal sin if any in my book). But guess what, they made that build. They're HAPPY with that build. That's the build that's going to stay there. For a little while, at least. <sigh> I'm just so surprised every time I hear about an UGLY build, since everyone thinks something differant is ugly. ... Note, I'm not sure how anyone can consider a primary color rotating flashing cube PRETTY, but I'm willing to believe that someone somewhere would like it... In the multiverse... It's a mathmatical certanty! ![]() |

I've been in SL for over a year, and i have concluded that most of SL looks terrible. I've seen some nice places (mostly which were on island sims), and most of the places that were nice on the mainland were surrounded by malls, floating signs, etc. Something needs to be done to improve the looks of Second Life! ![]() Second Life is the internet in 3d. |

Second Life is the internet in 3d. Not really. Second Life doesn't fully implement the third dimension, it's really only two and half dimensional. Thus when you buy land you buy some limited control over a 2D area, but the control only extends up a short distance. And your can't just keep going up and up and build and move and script like you can at ground level. Further internet users use a large number of public protocols that make interchange and use of widely disparate types of information possible. SL uses mostly propriety data structures and protocols and has only tiniest amount of compatiblity with thevast amount of data on the internet. Second Life doesn't even come close to the internet in 3D. _____________________

The only place I dislike is an area which is too realistic as in too built up/urban decay, but even that someone has created something (more than I could ever do) suppose I think of SL as something different. Although I detest areas which are jam packed wall to wall empty clubs n bars |

I've seen far too many wonderful builds and well designed areas by residents to even worry or pay attention to the ugly builds in SL.

In my time in SL I have discovered one rule that is pretty ongoing and durable.
Nothing is permanent. Ugly build? Wait long enough it will change. |

Then one day I decided it doesn't matter what the rest of SL looks like... Just as long as I am happy with my own little piece of it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are times when I build nice things, and there are times when I build ugly things.
My rule of thumb here is this: If it is to be permanent, it should be nice. If it is to be temporary, it can "appear" nice, but be a true ramshackle build. Sometimes, depending on the situation, its ok to build complete junk (for example, sitting on a plywood prim in the sandbox). Of course, eye of the beholder applies here... what is beautiful to you, might look terrible to someone else. I dont really think I can say anything to this post that hasn't been said already, so I will stop now =) _____________________

I want to publicy apologize to Crucial Armitage for snipping at her last night in this thread. She is a good friend of mine and I offer no excuses besides me being a bitch.
With that said I still say that what is ugly in SL has little or nothing to do with the builder's skill level. _____________________

You forgot the exclamation mark. ![]() i was disappointed by my lack of diligence too ![]() anyway, don't be turned off by ugliness. ugliness is quick, easy, cheap, and "practical." it's never going to go away. _____________________

Its pretty much the reason why I hang out in private islands or the void sims, floating in the wonderfully shader-enhanced water.
Mentally pleasing. Go ahead, make a plywood pyramid for all I care - won't affect me ![]() Juani is right, to a point - real life is messy because it just is hard to control. SL shouldn't be as bad, because we have more control than we do in RL, and there isn't constant entropy to fight, either. But we bring (or some of us do) the same habits into SL from RL, so its all a big mess. Just relax in the void sim sea, you'll be happier. _____________________

Sturgeon's Law:
02-06-2006 02:18
Sturgeon's Law /prov./ "Ninety percent of everything is crap". Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to `crap'. Compare Hanlon's Razor, Ninety-Ninety Rule. Though this maxim originated in SF fandom, most hackers recognize it and are all too aware of its truth.

Not sure...?

Well, I just bought my first piece of land the other day. Whether it'll be an ugly structure or not is to be decided. I do have to find a way to block the view of a porno add from my front lawn, rather, what will be my front lawn.
What I'm curious about is why don't they zone regions? If you have a shop, build in this area. If it's residentual, build in this area. That way someone else down the line, like me, won't have to consider what massive trees to use to block out Miss. Wahoo having fun. |
