I've been in SL for over a year, and i have concluded that most of SL looks terrible. I've seen some nice places (mostly which were on island sims), and most of the places that were nice on the mainland were surrounded by malls, floating signs, etc. Something needs to be done to improve the looks of Second Life!

Not sure what options are available. I mean, some people just don't take the time to make their stuff look good. What can you do about that?

Or maybe we can stop wasting time being worried about those still learning, without great skill, or without that kind of interest in a world made my everyone and thier dog. Nah. I'm ordering a Guillotine on eBay! ![]() _____________________

What level of building proficiency should we require? Should all building require permits with plan approval or should we just whack them down after they go up? And what about gradfathering in some of the older ugly builds?

Most of SL is ugly and most things that aren't are bought in a store. Rarely is something found in SL that's neither but I guess when you do find them it makes the occasion ever more precious.
C'est la vie. People would rather camp than learn how to build and texture. _____________________

And what about gradfathering in some of the older ugly builds? We can require permits galore, then when things are made in full compliance with the the permit regulations, whack them down. It's more fun that way, and it's one of the perks of bureaucracy. _____________________

It's also worth noting that as trite as the expression is, its also true: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
For example, across the street from my Market, I have a lot where I work. It's constantly a mess, because I have so many things in progress. I'm sure passers-by don't see what I see when I look at it. At the end of the day beauty is subjective .. and even subject to fashions and fads. Add that to the constantly changing skill levels, and the various purposes of the land people own and you get the most interesting mix. That is why many, including myself, love the mainland. ![]() |

It takes a while to learn to build nice things, as the rate of new players coming in is greater than oldish players, most of SL will be new builds by new people..
I've got quite a few ugly builds under my belt, and it helped me become a builder, I'd like you to show me one builder whose never built something ugly.. _____________________

In my opinion skill level has nothing to do with ugly builds. A skillful person who built ugly builds when he was new will continue to build them when he is experienced. The only difference is he will build skillful ugly builds.
Asthectics seems to be an inborn trait and not something ones learns by time spent in Second Life. Sorry to disappoint you tech types. ![]() _____________________

The walls were two layers thick (one brick, one wallpaper) because I didn't know about select texture, it wasn't lined up well coz I didn't know how to use the co ords boxes, the textures were ugly coz I didn't make them well.. That was an ugly build.. Now, I don't believe I build ugly things now, although the only thing I have in world now (that I know of) is my shop and thats built for praticality rather than looks. Anyway, I think skill level has something to do with it in some cases, some may pick it up straight away.. _____________________

honestly really now.
one of second life's greatest things is it freedom of expression ugly or not. to each there own. you don't like a particular build don't look. and remember this treat others as you would have them treat you. I also like to ask if it made you feel better to publicly acknowledge that there are ugly builds in second life. and not only acknowledge it but be down right angry about it with a try this some time when your looking at an ugly build and think to your self that this person is trying. its not easy to build in the beginning and not every one will have the skills or the vision to make some thing look beautiful but if they are trying and doing the very best they can at the time then i say thumbs up to them. _____________________

Hi Crucial. Sometimes I really wish people would look at what I post and not react to what they already have in mind. I am not speaking of you by the way but in general. I have people next door to some of my places who have been in SL for a long time and they still manage to build monstrosities. Their prims are placed exactly together but they have no sense of time or place. I can't help it but that's the way I see things. _____________________

Not sure what options are available. I mean, some people just don't take the time to make their stuff look good. What can you do about that? I know... you know those "ratings" we have.. well we could give a "bonus" based on how many rates *blue gets hauleed off suddenly by an angry mob. |

Easy Remind people that what you are saying is opinion only. A building that is Ugly to one person might be beautiful to another. This whole post is about Opinions only. |
