From: Argent Stonecutter Look, all this stuff sounds really nifty, but just being able to open an HTML *notecard*, not HTML on a prim, would cover most people's requirements, and a Linden-supported client-side-rendered XYText would handle the rest so much more efficiently it's insane to consider HTML on a prim a good idea.
I just think that a way of controlling output, like drawing on prims or maybe opengl access, is needed. For the time being, it seems that html on a prim might at least become a partial solution, even if it's not ideal.

will HTML on prim supercede streaming video and audio?
02-18-2006 14:54
I imagine that streaming audio and video will be one of the features of HTML on a prim. Do you think that the current method of streaming quicktime and audio will be deprecated in favor of the HTML on prim solution? Should it be?

Since it's likely to not be restricted to a parcel like the current streaming audio and video, I think that may eventually be the outcome. I'm guessing things like flash mp3 players on HUDs will get popular.

I'd hope uBrowser would remove this caching "feature".

From: Feynt Mistral Firefox is just a browser like any other. I could use lynx (a text only browser) to screw around on forums and make life hell for others. Firefox however has a small memory footprint compared to most other browsers (netscape, opera, IE (yes, IE is a two part system. MOST of it is loaded into windows so it seems faster, but that's because it's already loaded when windows starts up)) AND it's developed cross platform (Firefox for windows, linux, and mac. Coincidentally every platform SL is on or being worked on). Firefox itself is fast, stable, and extendable via plugins. Not to mention it's one of the few browsers out there that actually conforms to w3 regulations for tags. Yes I am aware of all that. I do own a computer shop after all. lol I was only pointing out that I knew for a fact that there are those out there who know how to use FireFox and/or plugins, etc. in the manner in which I mentioned. I've seen it done and am still on the bboard it was used on and also saw where the perpetrator told what he was using and a tidbit on how he did it. This was a 15 year old kid. If a 15 year old kid can use a browser to ban your account, mess up your ims and many other things this kid did and passed on the "how to" to 14 others then it is, in my opinion, a cause for concern. Think about it. If someone other than LL could ban you from SL would you not be concerned? That is all I was trying to say.

From: Noh Rinkitink [smartass]I'm sure there are people using the SL software to cause grief for others, too. I notice a distinct lack of cancelation on your account, Selene...[/smartass] Yes, there are. No doubt about that. What I do with my account is my business and none of yours. Good day.

And I bet they could have done the same with any browser. When I was 14 or 15, there weren't browsers, but man, did we cause trouble with our modems. It is what 14 or 15 year olds do, and I can guarantee it has nothing to do with Firefox in particular; give me your user names and passwords to your accounts, IMs and so forth and I'll mess them up too. At work, I like to help out people in the office with their PCs when they're having problems; I tell them if they allow their teens to use their computers, I won't help. Teens are horrid about operating systems, especially one as easily jacked as Windows XP, and seem to always get the machines infested with every type of malware you can imagine, by clicking "YES" to anything that pops up to get their file sharing apps and pr0n downloaded. I've seen it hundreds of times... and its got nothing to do with Firefox, trust me. I think your blame is mis-placed; if it should be on anything, it should be on Microsoft for still not having anything remotely approaching a secure operating system, even a decade after Win95 debuted. Regards, -Flip
