The "close chat after hitting return" setting is excellent for this. :p

I use the arrow keys while chatting. But when I fly and explore, I'm typically in first-person mode and use ASWD.

Arrow keys

Hate mouselook
Touch typing since forever. Only isn't it now called 'touch keyboarding'?

I think a better comparison than male/female might be are you a touch typist or not... I am, so moving my right hand to where my left is already at 'home row' just makes no sense. For SL this is the case becuase I'm much more likely to be programming or chatting than strafing.

For real "games" where I need turn/strafe while mousing I have a Nostromo Speedpad which I program to whichever keys on the KB I need. Much easier to program it to match my style in each game rather than reprogram each game.

I wonder if they make a lefty version Ghoti? :)

heh, I'm a touch typist, but I still use the arrow keys simply because I started using the arrows for games way back before awsd was any sort of common place. Also, I considered trying to switch so I wouldn't have to mess with so much key remapping in modern games, but because I use the keyboard by touch, I find it easier to find the key I want around the arrows because of all the dead space I can use as reference.

I want to use the mouse instead, like they do in Ragnarok Online. Or maybe SL should support my Adaptoid with N64 controller, like MAME does.

I use the arrow keys, except when I'm flying my TIE fighter, then I use my PC control pad.

Somehow I managed to hack my custom_keys.ini file to let me used ESDF instead of WASD. I've used ESDF ever since I played Doom all those years ago, and old habits are hard to break. :D

:eek: I was told off last time for too many options! But that was because I didn't use multiple choice..

So my next poll should say..

Arrows Keys
WASD
Number pad
Male
Female
Right Handed
Left Handed

?

I doth use both. One one hand (pun), I like how the arrow keys are positioned, but using my left hand on the WASD makes it easier for me to do additional things with my right hand without crossing hands over. I find I use WASD more in Mouselook, not unlike first-person shooter games. Also sometimes takes me a little while to adjust between controls, since in Mouselook, A-D <---> make you strafe instead of turn.

Still hoping for foot pedals to go forth, tho.

Female, right-handed (60% of the time), I've always used the arrow keys--ASWD just doesn't 'feel right', it gets in the way too much.

And an option for mapped the controls onto a joypad
One for people who only use the mouse, actually, make that 2 - one for people with forward mapped to a button and one for people who only use right click > go here
Better put an option in for a switch based interface too
Oh, and don't forget crazy home made VR setup

:p

Actually, I was just thinking that all the Mac gamers I've known have used the number pad heavily for controlling stuff. Haven't known any for a while, so maybe that's changed now.

I tend to use the arrow keys with my right hand while keeping my left hand resting on F, E and C .

Think I'll try WADSFEC tonight :)

WASD and...

F = Fly
E = up
C = down

Shift + A and Shift + D is the left and right strafe, but I rarely use it.

Keys with left hand, mouse with right. I have been using my mouse to steer my direction alot lately though.

Doesn't that make it hard to chat?!?!

most of the time I use AWSD unless I'm doing a lot of chatting, then it's arrow keys. It's a carryover from my UT days :)

I use the arrow keys in Second Life because I IM and chat far more than I move around. I've used the left side of the keyboard for movement in other games when i needed my right hand to execute other keyed commands such as slash, throw, scream in panic et al.

It's also excellent for having your character suddenly fly or leap about when you try to chat. :P

You get used to it eventually. Although, ironically, double pressing return becomes kinda natural then and you get back to the "wwwwdddw" problem. :p
