Perhaps a better question instead of male/female would have been 'right/left handed'.

I am left-handed. I drive my mouse with my left hand and use the arrow keys to steer with my right hand.

Hmm.. I'm right handed and I use the arrow keys :D

But good idea.. The person I was talking with thought it might have more to do with Male/Female.. Sorry folks.. Feel free to post which handed you are!

I think a better comparison than male/female might be are you a touch typist or not... I am, so moving my right hand to where my left is already at 'home row' just makes no sense. For SL this is the case becuase I'm much more likely to be programming or chatting than strafing.

For real "games" where I need turn/strafe while mousing I have a Nostromo Speedpad which I program to whichever keys on the KB I need. Much easier to program it to match my style in each game rather than reprogram each game.

I wonder if they make a lefty version Ghoti? :)

right handed
female
mouse and arrow keys w/right hand
never use aswd (intentionally) unless forced to by game setup (Star Wars something did)
(drawing tablet w/right hand too)

oh and I'm a touch typist since ... 1979 (I think, or 78)

however

in EQII, I use left hand for arrow keys, right for mouse and often "cross over" ala piano playing here and there

hope that helps!

I use WASD, with my right hand on the trackball.

I find it more comfortable due to being an FPS nut and finding the arrow keys awkward to use.

My keyboard placement means I'd have to reach across the keyboard to get to the arrow keys, and that ain't cool. ^.^

I typically use WASD, I'm left-handed.
If I could afford a Nostromo Speedpad, I'd get one of those instead and key it to Arrows.
I'd also program in my 'action phrases', but that's nother issue.

I use WASD just beacuse I'm used to playing other games that has that as the default setup.

I use the arrow keys because I hate having "wasdasasdadw" show up in my chat. If I could focus on the chat window like it was a real window instead of having to open and close it all the time I'd be more likely to consider things like that...

Arrow Keys (with left hand, right hand on mouse). Right handed.

I'm left handed, seen the wasd bit long ago, and realized ... This is for right handed people, for once something works better for left handed people :) You can't steer the mouse with your right hand very well if your left hand is on the arrow keys.

Though at work I use my mouse in my right hand. I'm ambidextrous so long as it isn't fast like a fps.

I find the WASD combination to be more comfortable.

I can move around, fly up and down, toggle flying, all while moving the mouse pointer at the same time. Or I can hold down the left mouse button on my avatar and steer it, so I don't touch the A or D keys (I do this all the time). I like doing that because I can do things like look up or down while flying... but not actually fly up or down. Or I can get a side view by holding down A or D then steering with the left mouse button. I can even get a behind view by holding down S then mouse-steering.

Ambidextrous - Male - it depends on what I'm doing at the time.

I'll swap back and forth depending on if I'm building, chatting, exploring - whatever is most comfortable at the time.. I don't really pay it much thought really.

While we're on the subject of controls... why is flying when in mouselook so awkward? It seems that when you press the fly up/down keys when looking up or down, you move at an angle.

I find this very awkward. It's like the avatar flies up/down along its local z axis, rather than the global z axis.

I employ a small right handed monkey to control my keyboard. He seems to prefer using the cursor keys. But now and then he'll get a little excited and out of control, especially when a cute avatar comes on screen. A good spanking soon gets him back under contol.

Arrows... unless forced to do otherwise, then I screw up because I'm just not used to the aswd combination

lol, I love Starax's posts. :D

On the controls it's gotta be wasd, partly because that's what I'm used to, partly because I'm right handed and partly because the up/down keys are within reach at the same time.

I almost always use the 3rd person mouselook too.

See I was right Zap...most women DO use the cursor keys because they are less likely to have experience in FPS games.

OK,OK! I know there are women who play FPS games. But a lot more men do.

WASD is just so wrong. Arrows have pointers. :D
