New Way To Warn Against Security Orbs? (PICS)

HISTORY:
Yesterday, I noticed that my neighbour to the south, who is normally quite pleasant to deal with, had put up a security orb with TP home. It was configured with a delay and warning, and I thank her for that, but security orbs in general irritate me, and my land has a hiking trail that ends up just a few metres from the border, and could entice my visitors to cross the border. So, I asked her if she'd take it down with the increased ban lists, and received no response.

I was watching the Discovery channel tonight, while playing around in Photoshop, and I suddenly had a fun idea on how to deal with a neighbour who uses a security orb. Since these devices emulate a mine field, why not mark it as such on my side of the property line?

I started with a sign placed on the borderline right beyond the trail head, stating that by crossing the sign, you'd be leaving Lupinia's borders, and entering hostile territory.

I was going to leave it at that, but I decided to go all-out and build a fence across the entire adjoining property line.

And, as a finishing touch, every ten metres or so I placed a sign I designed based on the universally-recognized landmine warning signs.

Anyway, this was something I'd never seen before, and I thought it was an amusing and potentially effective way to deal with neighbours who use security orbs, particularly if your land is a public place. Thoughts? Comments? If anyone would like the textures or PSDs that I used, feel free to email me, felix@lupinia.us.

==========================

NOTE: After taking these pictures, I noticed that my neighbour turned her orb off. I'm not sure if it'll stay turned off or what, I'll have to catch her next time she's online. As much as I hate these scripts, it's tempting to ask her to turn it back on so I can keep the minefield warnings up :-P

Also, I'm attempting to learn Russian, but aside from the alphabet, I haven't gotten very far, so the Russian wording on my signs is based on my translating dictionary. So, I'm well aware that it's probably not 100% correct :)

Very, very nice.

I'd been considering something like that when I had a parcel that had the red ban stickers on either side, but THIS beats what I was thinking of by a mile. :-) Filed for use in the future if needed. :-)

Recreate Hadrian's wall and put angry Picts on the other side.

Hehe, thanks for the positive comments :-D

I talked to my neighbour again, she turned down the sensitivity on her orb, and said she didn't mind if the barrier remained, she seemed pretty amused by it. Amicable solutions are the best.

If anyone wants to see it in-game, just do a search for Lupinia :-)

Oh and Yiffy, had I been able to find a fence texture that didn't suck, I would've done razor/barb wire for the barrier going across :-P

If that's supposed to be russian, you should be using a "П";(P) there instead of an "Л";(L) for the second character.

[squints at dictionary] Darn! Stupid 3-point font, thanks for letting me know :-)

Just out of curiousity, is the rest of it (two whole words) correct, or even close?

*falls over laughing and files this away for future reference*

A positively entertaining way of dealing with the situation!

I'm one who is in favor of security orbs and have one in my skybox, and I thought the pictures were hilarious. If my orb wasn't 500m in the air, I'd put up signs like that myself :)

The security orbs debate has been hashed out dozens of times on these forums, so I'd rather this not turn into yet another orbs vs. no orbs discussion. I personally feel that security devices that use TP Home in any way, regardless of implementation, shouldn't be permitted on the grid, and are the SL equivalent of an automated shotgun or a minefield rather than a simple alarm system. And aside from a warning before taking action (if you're lucky), there's no way for someone to tell that they're about to walk into a protected area.

This started because my land is public access, and she's running an orb, and I didn't want my visitors accidently walking into the trap. So, I started trying to come up with a sign to place at the border, I saw a clip about marking landmine fields on TV, and I came up with this idea.

all i'm saying is that they are usefull if configured right and the tp home it's not like u killing them...i use tp home only cause if u put push then they end up god knows where and maybe in worst shape then being sent home...also for the warning if you where to break into someones home u would not necaceraly get a warning that they have an alarm system or anything...some are silent alarms so u wont even know the cops are comming...i'm not trying to make this a debate in anyway am just voicing my opinion as well....and good idea on your posters and fence

In real life anyone of us may decide to purchase a home security system, we may lock our doors, we may install a fence or the proverbial "bad dog", however, SL isn't real life. In SL, you can't steal objects, you can't deface walls or furniture or grounds. You can leave trash laying about, but that can easily be taken away with the menu which "returns objects".

I believe if you want to live behind the red nasty tape or install a non-friendly orb which in effect pushes you much like the weapons in SL, you shouldn't mind the signs that were so illustrated here. Actually, you should feel grateful. Just one more way to scare off contact with SL citizens you don't know. :)

Cute "and" appropriate signs. Way to go!

I like the ideal that someone would set up signs on his property warning the inocent not to proceed into a danger zone. Also the signs are of a cool design :) He is doing a public service.

*laughs* It's not a half bad solution. Rather creative. I've always disliked the concept that I might inadvertantly cross a completely unmarked border, and find myself in a free-fire zone of some sort.

The one suggection I would make would be to make the signs and barrier tape 100% alpha from the other person's side. If you want to use that kind of markings for protecting your guests from inadvertantly stepping into danger, that's cool. But the person on the other side might be less amenible to having their view cluttered up in such a way than your neighbor was.

The land owner has every right to use a security orb.

The owner of the land next to it has every right to post the land with the security orb without their permission. They do not have to "hide" their warning from their graces view.

I leave "show property lines" turned on pretty much 100% of the time I'm in Second Life. I'm used to them. I actually find them useful quite a lot of the time - they stop me crossing them by accident and ending up somewhere I shouldn't be.

On the other hand... what does it say about SL's culture if people leave 'show property lines' turned on while they are wandering around... because they don't want to end up on some parcel with (illegal) scripts that TP someone home with no delay or do other undesirable things to them?

I use a security orb on my Skybox, but I have a 30 second warning, and I have the radius set at minimum to enclose the skybox.

On my home on the ground, I just use the ban lists to ban specific individuals.

And I LOVE those signs!!
