I come from the great open technological fields where the raw byts and bits still roam free. Where Avatars are free from burden and only know joy, there where vectors and pixels go hand in hand.

Someone at a bar last night asked me where I was from and I didn't know how to answer in RL. How the hell can I come up with a proper response for the nutbarn that is SL?

I'll usually tell people I've just met what state I live in, it helps keep the conversation going and gives us something to relate to, kind of like the weather.

Though now I'm tempted to give them my in world region. =3

It depends on the context. I live in Mississippi, so I am kind of ashamed to admit my location under any circumstances, even things like putting the return address on an envelope.

Sometimes you get the impression that you have some young hormone filled young man who is silly enough to think you look young and trim like your avatar and will be wanting to meet you for a some hot sex. In cases such as that I just give them Chip Midnight's address and phone number. Works for me.

Most of the time I say: I live in a van. In the deepest, darkest void of the SL grid. I'm the unborn twin in your belly communicating with you telepathically. I'm directly from the loins of Phillip Linden, birthed here to suck out random people's brains. You know, good stuff like that.

People who I like, know where I'm from anyways. Well, I think I told them.

It ultimately depends on where I see the convo going. If I know it's just a random meat-market chatroom dribble thing, I will just sit back and be a snarky bastard. I hate those age/sex check questions. But if I'm bored I will bite for awhile til something shiny distracts me.

When it comes up, I usually give the general geographic region. "Bay Area, California." And its almost always somehow related to comments about the time in RL -- "Wow, it got late!" "Really, where are you?" Etc.

At the moment however I'm not talking to anybody in-world. I'm dispatching legions of flying monkehs to search for that amazing hawt chick Amy Weebler...

I answer where I am from - Stockholm, Sweden and ad Europa - sometimes also Scandinavia - all to help ..- as all dont know the map so well.... thats lovely with SL - we are from so many diff places..

Time zoones can be hard to live with....
