From: Joshua Linden Hey everyone! We are planning the release of Second Life version 1.11.1 on Wednesday July 26th, 2006 pending final verification of all issues. Second Life will be unavailable from 7am to 12pm PDT/SLT for the update. New client software will be required to access 1.11.1. The 1.11.1 Preview grid has been updated with the release candidate, and will remain open while we are performing the update to the main grid. We encourage you to stop by and check things out. Second Life viewers can be downloaded from the Preview page of our website, http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php. Here are the tentative release notes, pending final verification of all issues: New features: * Additional right-click functionality for inventory folders containing wearables ** "Add to Outfit" puts accessories on your avatar without removing existing ones *** This is also activated by shift-dragging the folder onto your avatar ** "Replace Outfit" removes existing outfit and wears contents of folder ** "Take Off" removes ONLY worn items in the folder * Region/Estate and About Land now feature the option "Restricted Pushing" ** When pushing is restricted, only the following calls of llPushObject will succeed on the land: *** Any push called against the owner of the scripted object *** An object owned by the landowner *** An object deeded (or Set) to the same group the land parcel is deeded (or Set) ** Region/Estate edits this setting on a per-region basis, not per-estate Other changes: * llGiveInventory() box now supports an option to mute the giving agent (user or object) * llPushObject() functionality can now be disabled on a parcel or region * Sounds triggered by muted residents are now muted * Change LOD scaling of Object Mesh Detail slider to be higher quality when it's set to maximum Bug fixes: * Banned users cannot be heard from your parcel * Texture tab and picker no longer preview textures on objects you don't own * Fixed a bug where IM and Chat history text is blurred on some ATI cards * Fixed a bug where skirt mesh blocks attachment editing on legs * Group names, parcel names, classified names are now filtered to ASCII characters * All default gestures no longer deactivated upon first relogin * 'Stop Flying' button is now disabled when flying over No Fly land * Right-click IM calling cards now works consistently * Fixed a bug where scrollbars failed to appear when IM window holds more IMs than IM panel can display * Fixed a bug where multi-select of faces does not always display the last selected face properties * Fixed a bug where color settings revert to black when changed from defaults * Fixed a bug where clicking set in about land / forsale doesnt automatically show the calling cards * Hitting enter while chat history has focus now focuses the chat bar Linux client fixes: * No linux client-specific fixes in this release Well, do the changes in the new version coming Wednesday suit you? Was there a change you wanted that didn't get made? Do any of the changes not suit you? Has the F1 Help information been update to reflect the changes? There's signs on Help Island telling you to press F1 for help so big they would choke a horse while blocking your view of the horse and the rest of the herd - will the new users get correct information or an outdated help site? How are we to know if the preview grid uses the standard main grid help url? There are choices for clothing folders to add to or replace outfit; I take it that outfit means what you are currently wearing. A way to avoid putting on a folder that takes off your underwear and your flight aid. That sounds good, if I read it right. Same snapshot function, no option for the old one that suited the vast majority of users better than the new one done. But hey, I have Irfanview, and now Snag-it, I can just take screen captures and put them on Photobucket instead of sending snapshot to Cristiano's Snapzilla. It's harder and no one will see them, but what the heck, that's progress.

I know that Michi and eltee looking closely at objects inworld, I will be interested to see their evaluation of the LOD changes.
It will of course to be interesting to see what folks say about the push restrictions.
The chat still closes if you press enter on an empty line.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I know that Michi and eltee looking closely at objects inworld, I will be interested to see their evaluation of the LOD changes. I'm in preview right now, object mesh detail slider on full, everything seems to be back the way it should be! Even with the slider at the default half way, zooming in all the way puts the LOD at maximum Now if we could only get those shiny bugs fixed...

... I'm surprised Residents are not more impressed. Consider, in this update, we are getting : * the ability to choose if we want a folder dragged on our av to *replace* or *add to* our existing av. * llPushObject restrictions that will do a huge amount to halt griefing * Easy muting of avatars/objects that spam us with inventory offers. * Sounds triggered by muted Residents are also muted. * Users banned from your parcel cannot be heard on the parcel they are banned on.
That's one major needed change (push restrictions), and several smaller very nice changes (easy muting of spammy objects, muting for avs on parcels they're banned from, sound muting, better management of dropping folders on avs).
It most definately surprises me that people aren't happy about this. Ok, I can see that with the serious stability issues that SL has been having lately (my sim crashes multiple times per *day* with no explanation forthcoming) that you might fear bugs. That's reasonable - bugs do happen. The feature set though, I think, is definately a very good thing.

While I still think, the pie menu and snapshot system should be reworked / rolled back, the new update changelog does show some really important fixes and improvements. See here for another thread on the topic: /108/11/124278/1.html

personally.....I'd have loved ONE week off from a patch. After all the problems of last week, and the announcement that LL's were looking into less frequent updates, I thought this weeks usual downtime would have been cancelled.

Other changes: * llPushObject() functionality can now be disabled on a parcel or region * Sounds triggered by muted residents are now muted * Change LOD scaling of Object Mesh Detail slider to be higher quality when it's set to maximum Bug fixes: * Banned users cannot be heard from your parcel * Texture tab and picker no longer preview textures on objects you don't own * Fixed a bug where color settings revert to black when changed from defaults
For boldface, happy for those who were panicking. For the rest, happy happy. Most so for red stuff They still need to work on push options for avatars but the land options are a welcome relief. Goodbye to Griefers (part 1).

Am I reading this announcement correctly? It sounds as though the Preview grid has only been updated with these new features mere hours before they are applied to the main grid?

This is insane, only a few hours of preview available before the release. And at a time where many is offline. I'll better plan for doing something else for the rest of the day, and probably for tomorrow too. Maybe I'll go get my taxi This is not exactly what I expected after Robins excusing letter, telling how they would improve testing.

From: Aodhan McDunnough They still need to work on push options for avatars but the land options are a welcome relief. Goodbye to Griefers (part 1) Would be more use to simply have an avatar setting push / be pushed on or off - this would mean that wherever you were, if you had push off, you couldn't use a weapon or be affected by anyone else with them. It might break a few elevators that used push, but the benefits far outweigh the problem. The best way to stop griefers... close the biggest loophole there is.... THE OPEN REGISTRATION SYSTEM. Lewis

I approve of this actually. Good things to put in. LOTS of bug fixes (duh! They screwed up major last time).
Bad points, however;
-Need WAY WAY WAY more time testing before adding MORE options. Fixes yes, new things OH HELL NO!!!!!
-No mention of the Pie Menu problem. R-Click as is is very annoying and potentially dangerous to losing items. This needs fixed or reverted back ASAP.
-No mention of Camera Functions. I wonder if the Feature Implementation Team (I hope LL has one of those) even LOOKS at Resident feedback.
My desires for future features;
-BRING BACK PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION IN REGISTRATION
-GIVE RESIDENTS THE ABILITY TO TURN OFF ||PUSH PER AVATAR REGUARDLESS OF WHAT LAND THEY ARE ON. For the combat sims, give a land options to dis-allow turning off push. Sort of like the heart we use now.
-Give an option to use the old camera system. Also, do a study to find out if keeping the new system (and debugging it) is worth the time when so few even like it.
-Move the LIBRARY in our inventory to it's own tab. With the addition of tabs in the inventory, why the hell is the Library still on our main list of items?

It might break a few elevators that used push, but the benefits far outweigh the problem. There seemed to be alot of 'resistance' to that idea when it was brokered at one of the townhalls and on some of the linden blogs... they were much happier with a land owner setting, and frankly it should be mostly moot as i can't see anyone sane leaving push on, on their private land (since any possible push objects of theirs will still work fine) and pretty much every public area in SL will most likely be set nopush by dinnertime tonight. A per av setting would have 'enabled' cheating in specific combat sims/games, or some such, i duno... overall i'm just happy clicking one checkbox now provides 24/7/365 push protection for our guests but yes, overall: nopush, *thank you* restored detail *thank you* better folder/outfit management thank you muting muted idiot's sounds *thank you* chat color bug fix *thank you* texture picker more accurately reflecting, and limiting, to 'fair use' doctrines (things you have acquired some personal license to use/own) hey, thanks too, its not 100% ideal for either creators or users, but its a pretty good compromise.

From: Kalia Meiklejohn Thank god I'm not a paying player...or else I'd be downgrading with all these updates, bugs, etc... I'm premium, and the updates are a good thing. They squash the bugs, and offer new features. That's what I am paying for. There is no way to prevent all bugs from making it to a live server environment until it's there. SL is too complex a system to run perfectly after each update. This is common in all MMORPG's / 3D Multiuser Environments. Imagine what LL could develop if they had a larger budget from more premium subscriptions. But alas, too many people want a free indefinite ride.

They copied the ppl on the main grid some time ago. You should be ok for the next preview.

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu Your joking on the goodbye to griefers aren't you? I think you guys are underestimating the school yard bully.. Never good to underestimate.. Very true... and each new "fix" for a griefing issue, limits scripters who legitimately develop content using the tools griefers abuse.

The no push restrictions in both about land and estate tools is a good thing. And I admit, the way it works sounds good in theory. I have one question.. does this mean that the no push blocks it if the weapon is fired from outside the parcel? (It's early for me, sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.)
Bug fixes are always welcome. Always. And the return of true LOD is good, very, very, very good.
