Oh, and I almost forgot:

The ability to hold 40 avatars in a sim.

The ability to hold 60 avatars in a sim.

The ability to hold over 100 avatars in a sim!

Nice thread. It's good to see all these pluses in one place... instead of the never ending carping. There are a couple of things I'd forgotten.

Holy crap yes, Chris. llGetFrigginNumberOfNotecardLines(). I actually tried to explain to someone in RL why I was excited about that addition. There were some dubious looks, but I continued my Geeky Dance of Joy unfazed. :D

This thread needs to be bumped every now and then when things are looking dark. Instability is sometimes the price we pay for constant innovation.

It's a bumpy ride, but I'm glad to be a passenger on the bus, and sometimes have to remind myself that under a more traditional business or software development model, we'd still have the feature set of SL v1.2! :D

-Flip

er, there is not going to be a render 2.0, or a new rendering engine.

I guess you didn't get the memo.

I heard it's still in planning, however, it will be release piece by piece instead of in one fell swoop. For example, the new maps intro'd in 1.7 use the code from the new rendering system to render the maps, right?

:)

huh. Okay, I heard quite the opposite: that Render 2.0 was a 'theoretical' that didn't end up being feasible. Then, GLSL attempts ended up being not ready for primetime anytime soon...

The new map may use some ideas from it, but I think that's still a long, long way to go before we see it in-world, if ever... Seems more like a repurposing than a phased release...

You may certainly, however, Flip, have more information than I do, heh.

No matter how good the 'new things' are - it won't overpower the 'never fixed and never finished list'...

Innovation is good, yes, but does it have to be either or constantly?

There have been several releases that both introduced a new feature or two - revisited old problems and tried to solve them, and fixed bugs.

Shouldn't that be the goal?

Software development, like all development, with moderation.....

* not only removed prim tax, but prim height tax... It actually used to cost you extra money to put prims high in the air! (prim tax was temporary, when you take the prims back to inventory or delete them, you got your money back!)

* removed the spiral prim way back in beta, but later added it back via torus.

* removed joints, AND motors. -- Motors were so cool. You used to be able to make a 3 prim vehicle, one cube as a seat and two cylinders.. You made the cylinders joints then added a motor to them, causing them to spin! sit down and go flying through a sim! So much fun, I miss motors.. But hopefully to be re-added in next Havoc updates.

* back in beta all land was bought in lindens! And lindens weren't really worth RL money.(I miss them days).

* A few updates to the avatars.

* Physics used to be a big problem, the sims would lock up and crash when a lot of physics were involved. They fixed a LOT of bugs related to this.

* Scripts used to crash the sims too! lol.. (I know I did).. They fixed a lot of these bugs as well!

Finding the right balance between insanity and stagnation is the goal - and it's a hard balance to find. Sometimes the Salvadore Dali model of software design isn't the right path to take... but man, is it exciting! :)

Well, Flipper, I'm a builder and my job has gotten a lot more frustrating and time-consuming in a lot of ways, and that isn't exciting.
