What features do you think will be a "must have" before SL can call itself 2.0????

Distributed architecture, mesh support, the stuff from the old 2.0 renders, web on a prim, Havok 2^H^H 4, and pecan pie. :D

Okay, seriously this time? Two bug fixes and one small new feature.

  1. Havok 4
  2. Proper LSL Virtual Machine or Conversion to Mono/other faster script interpreter
  3. New cacheing system with larger storage options
  4. Bump and Illumination Maps
  5. Shader 3.0 features/GL Equivilent
  6. At least Poser 5 level character models, fingers, facial expressions
  7. Radically different animation model with pre-cache support, possibly a switch to HavokAnimation
  8. Push divided so that vehicle transportation doesn't use the current push model
  9. Objects that can talk to each other by UUID from anywhere in-world
  10. HTML on a prim and object to replace notecards with full JavaScript support to write documents on the fly
  11. Pie? Mmmm... sound good!

Excellent summary!

The only thing I could add to that would be:

Importable meshes and 3d models. ie 3DMAX, AutoCAD and/or TerraModelling.

I would expect that any updates to the current world will go into 1.x style updates. If LL ever do use the version number 2.0, they'll probably use it to indicate an entirely new grid.

UI hotbar that will allow you to add/remove attachments, utilize scripted object calls, perform animations, basically whatever you put INTO it at the click of a button.

Anyone else have an attachment they put on/take off regularly but hate going thru inventory for it? HOTBAR ALREADY.

Its not like EVERY SINGLE OTHER GAME IN THE WORLD hasn't figured out this bit of UI genious.

Yes, a hotbar system would be really nifty.

But SL is not a game in the MMORPG sense.. its a Metaverse, and to many of us, its not a game. Which may be why the idea of a hotbar never made it in.

Sorry I forgot the Normal Maps, Kyrah!

I left some things off that I would hope to get in before a radical upgrade that a 2.0 would imply such as voice (proximity, group or private) and analog movement options.

Lupus, instead of a hotbar, how about a favorites tab in the Inventory like the recent items? Would allow the same item to appear in more than one place and would follow their current paradigm...

C'mon Io, while my list may imply negativity it in no way was intended as such. These are all exciting, available technologies that could increase performance and quality of visuals/options that fit into both the current level of PC imagery and Linden Lab's desire for Second Life to be a showcase for all you great visual artists out there!

You list didn't imply negativity, Clubside, I did. :)

I would love to have all these things, but.. I've reviewed the history of the client and I'm not holding my breath, heh. They seem to be moving ahead with html on a prim and new avatar interaction, though.

From: someone
From the game maker's website: "The release date of this game is "When it's done". Anything else, and we mean anything else is someone's speculation. There is no date. We don't know any date. If you have a friend who claims they have "inside info", or there's some game news site, or some computer store at the mall who claims they know - they do not. They are making it up. There is no date. Period."

Can we pre-order it from you? :p

  1. Earsplitting bugs in the sound system fixed (I HAVE BEEN REPORTING THESE SINCE 2004 GRRRRRRRRR)
  2. Avs and vehicles transition smoothly between sims rather than rubberbanding, hurtling off into the twilight zone, dropping passengers, etc.
  3. Objects and avatars can opt out of susceptibility to llPushObject as well as being pushed by physical objects
  4. Draw distances measured in miles
  5. As you fly higher you see the world below you, rather than nothing at all
  6. Atmosphere should end at some point
  7. Water that acts like water
  8. Mono, and some language like C# running on it
  9. Other stuff mentioned in this thread

SL 2.0 should not have any gray loading textures with white outlines.

Why not just change the grey to blank white LL? SL would look much better before everything finally decides to load... I don't understand the need for the ugly grey.
