My main beef with the updates is the downtime.. it smacks right at my weekend
they need to rotate days but thats not the topic this thread so don't keep it going past this post

When i played Asheron's Call every month i used to say, ahh 12 hour patch and a 4 hour hot fix (then sometimes another hotfix) SL's patching doesnt really bug me, but there are some things that make me wonder ...
im in agreement with Starax Statosky, i wish they would knock out some of the oldies
altho it personally doesnt affect me they should rotate somewhat to keep others happy
do i really need to download all 20mb for a handfull of changes (main progam aside there will be times the full install would be required)
and these damn post-it note features, i dont find much progerss in having to do something twice, once to implement it, and again to fix it

I don't mind the redownload at all! I'm an addict and it doesn't bother me the least bit for the downtime and then the download, as long as they keep the goodness coming.

I actually wonder how much its costing LL to port these patches. Bandwith costs a bunch yanno.

Bandwidth is cheap these days. I think I read that they pump out a gigabit/sec on average .... an inefficient patch process really isn't a big deal from that perspective.
As the number of users grow it may become more important though.

The assumption is that you have broadband.
Similarly, these forums are not formatted for 640x480.

One thing LL could do to make these updates more bearable is to have them download in the background while you are inworld or outworld, and then update automatically when the update is done (like Microsoft Automatic Update, unless they have a stupid patent on the idea). Right now, you have to stare at a screen and wait a few minutes to log into SL, click an install button, wait, then log in. LL could do a few things to smooth this process over so that it is least intrusive as it can be.

I think that FireFox is the best example: Up until recently, a FireFox update simply downloaded a new installer and installed a new FireFox over the old one using the standard Installation software.
This is what SecondLife is doing now - downloading a new installer and basicly doing the same as having the user go to a website and re-install everything.
Then FireFox 1.5 came out and introduced modular updates: Updates to FireFox now happen as modules, where only the relevent update files get downloaded and replaced. The download is much quicker and the installation is painless.
I'd like to see SecondLife heading toward the same direction.
(especialy if it means that it doesnt over-write the \character directory!)

I think that if Linden has to update weekly, they should switch around the days and times that they do it. *Gripes because I have off on Tues. and Weds. ! Let the Aussies suffer sometimes!
