Do you use "Camera Controls"?

I mostly use the camera controls. Like others, I activate them each and every time I log in.

Not only is that annoying, but bringing the control back to the top when its buried under an inventory pane, or something is also fun.

I would have to agree about mouselook ... I have a terrible time with it; I get very disoriented, and there is something about it that makes me faintly quesy. So I generally avoid it.

Is there a way to slide the camera vertically and horizontally without camera controls?

I use both extensively. The camera controls offer panning (horizontal and vertical movement) that is not possible with alt-mouse. Panning is incredibly useful while building.

A couple of people have asked if there is a way to pan without the camera controls. I do not know the answer to this. If there is, please let us know. I can imagine that there is some alt-ctrl-shift key combination that pans.

uhm there is another way besides camera controls? I have always used cam controls, I like em a lot and wish the damned thing would stay where I put it across sessions lol

of course now that I have heard of this fabled alt + mouse I will try it but if its anything like flying or piloting a vehichle I know I will hate it ;)

I use both, but more on camera controls. They are useful to get to prims that are entangled with other prims. I also like using the Ctrl-8, Ctrl-0 for snapshots.

I use both because alt-click, like was mentioned, doesn't let you pan.

Mak uses camera controls because its easier on his left wrist. When I was at his place and saw him logged onto SL I was like "WTF are those blue things in the corner?" Obviously, I'm exclusively mouse & keyboard.

As you're holding alt and zooming around, if you have the edit panel open, you'll see a "pan" option radiobutton there. ;)

I use alt almost exclusively, very seldom use the camera controls, but still do find myself using them for the occasionally tricky shot. I definitely think it would be a good thing to have the window persist across sessions for the people that do use this feature, however. :)

I use Alt Zoom exclusively. The camera controls seem to be too jumpy if you're zoomed way in on something.

Ctrl+Alt makes the camera rotate around the focal point, up and down as well as side to side.

Ctrl+Alt+Shift pans the camera.

What's really cool is that you can zoom in with Alt, and part way there, when you see you're at the wrong angle, you can toggle the Ctrl as you're zooming in and have relatively smooth angle change, and then release the Ctrl key to continue zooming at your new angle.

Very cool. I will have to try this. But the thought of having to press four keys to do something so simple makes my hands hurt already. Perhaps I can adjust.

...I don't like the rude way in which you asked it. ... told me I'm an more or less an idiot for using them like Ben here are far too many...
I am truly sorry you have taken offense - but I assure you none was meant.
Please do not put words in my mouth. I have called no-one an idiot, and do not believe I was rude.
This poll was based on genuine surprise, for which I do not apologise, and an effort to educate myself and correct my ignorance.
Furthermore, it seems to me that others have found this discussion as interesting and informative as I have.

Oh yeah! Well you over-reacted to my over-reaction to your over-stated remarks, so there!.

I've really learned some good things about how individual Residents approach this part of SL!

I'm thinking I could do some special mapping with my graphics tablet and get some even neater navigation done.

Now, SL responding to pressure sensitivity--that'd be a boon!

some things you just cant do with ALT mouse

great example of this is in a mall booth, course these things are tiny and its quite frequent that you might loose something in the wall, well you can alt click to focus on the wall zoom in really tight and use camera controls, if your carefull enugh you can get a clear shot of the object embedded in the wall grab it and move it, without any embarasing, im a tard and lost a picture in the wall IM's

I personally have the camera controls up all the time, i use alt click to focus on the subject and the controls to get any view i may need, or want. I love the things and usually recomend ppl know where they are and the fact that they exist.

I find them irreplaceable for photography and biulding.

That being said, should everyone be forced to have them on each login.. probally not, just becuase someone had them on last time doesnt mean someone needs them the next time. Like many things in SL i think it should have a checkbox in the options panel. That way everyone wins.

Having a variety of different control systems is very important for people with various dexterity impairments There are Second Life users with hand movement and coordination problems that make mouse use difficult; keyboard shortcuts and commands are good for these folks. There are folks here with the reverse problem, they are ok with a mouse but have problems with a keyboard. The onscreen camera controls are useful in sort of case. Making the virtual environment accesible to all requires multiple and flexible input systems.

I heard from one person who doesn't have the use of their left hand. The mouse and alt key system doesn't work too well for them.

When I first started playing SL, I used the Camera Control window to move my camera around. After playing SL for about 2 weeks, the friend who got me into SL was watching me play it RL, and she saw that I was using the Camera Control window. She taught me about the joys of using the ALT key instead, and I used it lots.

However, I still used the Camera Control window while I was building, but once I learned about ALT+CTRL, that was history.

However, I still used the Camera Control window in taking snapshots, but once I learned about ALT+CTRL+SHIFT, that was history.

Once ALT, ALT+CTRL, and ALT+CTRL+SHIFT become second nature, Second Life becomes a much more immersive, quicker and easier experience overall. For the past 3-4 months, my pinky finger is now conditioned to always be on the ALT key. I'm considering scratching off the "ALT" label on the actual key iteself and writing "GOD" in with a Sharpie instead.

Even though ALT Clicking is covered in an Orientiation Island trail station, a lot of new residents I meet on Help Island have no idea about ALT Clicking (Hell, I didn't know about it when I first started, as stated above). I guess when you first start off a new game and are being bombarded with tons of various new information to absorb, some tidbits slip through the cracks.

I use both, it depends on the situation.

Why didn't you include a "I use both" option? I didn't vote.

Has anyone tried the PgUp/PgDn buttons, especially while sitting? I discovered this looong after I was used to the Alt/Ctrl/Shift controls...
