Do you use "Camera Controls"?

I saw a whole lotta ppl saying they would like to see the "camera controls" box persist across SL sessions - which surprised me. I didn't think anyone older than 3 days used that box :D

So I'm curious - who uses the alt-click-drag manner to swing their camera around, and who uses the camera control box - and why? Particularly those using the box - is it because you don't know about alt-mouse, or do you prefer the box for whatever reason you are about to kindly supply? :)

AFAIAC - I prefer alt-mousing for its ability to very quickly and fluidly swing around, zoom in or out, retarget my point of view - and to do all of this slowly and carefully as well.

I prefer alt and mouse, but camera controls are useful occasionaly. Most often I use them when shopping.

I can't imagine any reason why anyone with two arms would use the camera controls box.

Where's the "I use both extensively" option? :) I use alt-mouse for looking at things that I have direct line of sight too, or for zooming in very closely; but when building large-scale stuff I often use the arrow camera controls because it's easier to position the camera that way when it's rather far away from my AV, and possibly in small enclosed rooms. Plus it comes in rather handy for snapshots.

I find the Alt+mouse controls annoying as all get out. I find I'm in the minority, and that's ok w/me! I'd love to the control box to stay up across session, and frankly I'd think that whatever setup I have on the screen when I log, should be there when I get back in SL.

Photoshop, MS Word and gee just about every other proggy I can think of does that. I don't need others to be forced to using or fighting the camera box, but I'd like to be able to check box it to stay put and be ready for me next time.

My mini map is always there waiting for me, yet I use the camera controls much more frequently.

Camera controls are very very useful for taking photographs. I use them all the time for that.

And for fine control during building, althhough that is more a matter of preferences I suspect

ooops - Sorry, Jackal, that one didn't occur to me - I'll mentally chalk you up for that one.

Thanks for the info, so far peeps, and keep it coming - but remember this is not a discussion on the persistance of the box - rather if and why you prefer one method over the other.

O, what a lovely question.

It's funny... because the way I learned to use SL camscamming, my hands "botched" it up. I remember the eyechart on Orientation Island, but I ended up using ALT-CTRL-clicking instead, which is more versatile for repositioning. I use this in tandem with my mouse's scrollwheel, to finangle angles very nicely! ALT by itself has its uses for me, and I also use Camera Controls for finetuning.

Also underrated: Ctrl-8 and Ctrl-0 for zooming!

Leave the camera box alone. Some of the residents use it to free their other hand for more important tasks.

The cam controls should be persistent on screen, definitely. There are places the altmonkey can't take you. And I agree re photography--cam controls are indispensible!

Ctrl-8 (cmd-8) and ctrl-0 (cmd-0) are focal length adjustments it seems, whereas alt-dragging the mouse up and down is a camera dolly in/out.

In case there are someone who isn't aware of it. Combinations of shift and ctrl in addition to alt allows more camera control.

Oh really? I'm definitely missing something then. How do you get pure vertical/horizontal movement in either alt/Mouse or ctrl/alt/Mouse?

Either only seem to give me a sort of smooth swoopy 'flying' movenent.

I favor camera controls for photo shoots

The camera control box (and movement box) is very useful for doing photoshoots across login sessions and crashes. However, the controls are not precise, and there is area for improvement if LL wants to add more options like coordinate entry. I think there's a proposal for this.

You need to teach yourself very precise mouse movement. It's kinda like mouse Tai Chi; once you achieve it, you shall be enlightened ;)

Camera control allows me to smoke, and drink coffee while moving the camera.
This is a major consideration.

I have the camera controls window open on my screen all the time. I just wish I didn't have to open it at each session, along with the movement controls window.

I'm aware of all the methods but I use the camera control box, awful as it is.

Simply because I need the precision; any other method doesn't cut it.

Not leaving it persistent means I get to enable it the moment I log in, each and every time. I would guess I've spent twenty or thirty minutes over the course of my SL life, constantly spending a few seconds to turn it back on.

I suppose there are 'immersion' reasons to leave it, and the property lines off, but for me it's just simple endless misery.

With the new camera controls in 1.9, someone may make a bit of cash selling a better camera control to anyone who does precision building, because the camera control box is awful. (or, I'll write it myself)

I am shocked at how many people actually use the camera controls box. I would not have predicted that.

I use the camera controls and like Torley I think it's a great question to ask, but I don't like the rude way in which you asked it.

Up until very recently, I was *unable* to use "Alt-Mouse" (which is actually Opt-Mouse for me), because my computer was just not up to it. The Camera controls, as well as the Movement controls, are vital in high lag situations and for anyone who does not have a super-duper computer and the number of people who have looked down on me or told me I'm an more or less an idiot for using them like Ben here are far too many.

I also have an almost impossible time using "mouselook" to walk with, and again, until recently couldn't drive a vehicle that requires it, so sue me.

People should stop being so snobby about this, vehicle makers should realise that half the buyers of their product don't have state-of-the-art computers, and LL should make the $@£$!&*!! camera controls persist across log-ins.

Almost a year I have been playing times 3 to 4 log-ins a day makes over a thousand times that I have had to go to the menu and select the camera and movement controls as I have done it every single time I have logged in since the first day.

I think I might be the only one with this answer but...

The camera control box is all I use :)

I just started with it and got really used to it.

Now I'm a wiz with it.

If there's such a thing.
