When I opened up todays SPIEGEL (largest and most prestigious weekly news magazine in Germany; a kind of TIME but much more voluminous) I hardly could believe my eyes: A home story on Anshe and her business in Second Life. A full page tooting her as the most successful busines woman in the game. Link here (only in german, alas). It is a rather well written article focusing mostly on her and not that much on the platform. Most (!) of the facts were astonishingly well researched if you take into consideration that is is hard to understand some differences between the real estate market in SL and in First Life. Even her past as an escort was briefly mentioned - in a tasteful way. Interesting detail: her current holdings are given as 130 "planning squares". Anshe's PR department seems to work really well. Go baby, go! Little side note: my local newspaper had half a page (but page 3!) on Second Life last Saturday. The article was somewhat uninformed and obviously intended for a still computer-sceptic audience. I am living in a somewhat rural area. It focused a little too much on the psychological dangers of online worlds for my taste. But at least it did not mention Anshe with one word. Probably because the author could not come into SLK much. The newspapers IT department prohibited her from coming inworld much - opening up some UDP ports in the newspapers firewall seeemed much to dangerous. I am wondering a little where the sudden interest in Second Life in the German mediascape is rooted. Or should Linden Lab really do some international PR?

If you can handle babelfish.. From: someone
A hessian teacher ascended to the large basic owner in an on-line play. Past profit: nearly 200,000 dollar - in genuine money.
ANZEIGE
In the morning, if the children from the house are, another life begins for the nut/mother. It is called now Anshe Chung. It switches its computer on and counts the incomes of the last night.
Mrs. Chung makes trueful wunderliche business: In the on-line play "Second Life" speculates it in development land. More than eight million square meters belong to it already. Fellow players warn of a property monopoly.
Spielerin Chung in the on-line world:Ten dollar as starting capital Großbildansicht Spielerin Chung in the on-line world: Ten dollar as starting capital In the first life Mrs. Chung is called differently. She lives at the hessian mountain route, not far from the castle ruin Franconia stone, and she gives language instruction at a people's highschool. In the play world however it is well-known as Anshe Chung, the Magnatin, which incorporates their company of the same name always new real estates.
"Second Life" is popular with Haeuslebauern and end of workday architects. The inhabitants meet on-line, in order to establish enormous arbours, glaeserne space stations or nozzle-driven castle in the airs. Well 500 players are Anshechung.com in the meantime subject to the payment of interest; they live as tenants on their Laendereien. The lease is settled with play money, which the user must change against US dollar.
Teacher Chung, immigrated from China, controls her Imperium of the roof room of their terraced house out. In hardly two years it brought the grazile new German to sayful wealth. And from its play dollar could become at any time serious: To "Second Life" belongs an on-line stock exchange, where the fictitious Binnenwaehrung is exchanged for genuine money.
With the current rate of exchange Chungs fortune is US dollar worth to the 200,000.
"up to now", it says, "I invested however nearly everything again." It applies to use the boom of the virtual economics. The players build gladly in fine areas (and at least as stately as the neighbours). And the influx after "Second Life" tears not off: Already more than 100,000 settlers established themselves here.
The operator company lime trees lab in San Francisco throws always new land surfaces on the market. Nevertheless building ground is usually limited in good situations. Anshe Chung supplies itself in time in the large yardstick. "I buy the country of the operator", say her, "and then develop I it." That means: It puts on hills and valleys, distributes palms, rivers and wasserfaelle.
The software of the play permits nearly jederlei organization. Snow landscapes, tropical islands and oases between sandduenen develop. Subcontractor charms hie and there fairy taleful palaces. The finished Laendereien is divided at the end worth-increasing into plots and leased to bauwuetige new settlers.
In the meantime Anshechung.com acts with dozens of extensive settlement areas, which look like topic parks. They are called Friesland, Matsushima or A'ksha Oasis. Chungs enormous island realm "Dreamland" is considered as exzellente situation. There the Patronin, because you belong everything, can implement rigide development plans. While in the play world everyone klotzt elsewhere as desired, harmony prevails on Dreamland: Who wants to play trumps beside a Shinto shrine with Black Forest mansions, the lease is quit to that.
Anshes married man, a computer scientist, is responsible in the common enterprise for counting. However already the current fixed costs require some nerve strength: Converted more than 25,000 dollar in the month goes at present - than a kind real estate tax - to the operator company lime trees lab.
With this tax the constantly growing world is financed by "Second Life". It is distributed on 1400 network computers; everyone simulates a fictitious land surface of well 65,000 square meters. Anshechung.com possesses 130 of such grid squares; everyone contributes with scarcely 200 dollar to fiscal charges.
Nevertheless the Magnatin had to supply still no genuine money - the incomes in the play were always higher than the due fees. It is enough even already for five employees, who help against play money with the administration or as landscape gardners lauschige parks to put on.
Two years is not it Anshe Chung conceivablly small ago, there began. "my starting capital amounted to scarcely ten dollar", says it. So much costs uniquely the entrance to the play. Only she hired herself as Gesellschafterin for lonely settlers, then she tailors virtual dresses after asiatic taste for the play figures of other people. With the saved one only it rose in the real estate business.
But zuengeln again and again completely different rumors under the inhabitant shank of "Second Life": Didn't the Landbaronin buy itself nevertheless simply with bundles genuine dollar? A few merchant went you to the defiance with a new real estate company named Cyberland to the play stock exchange. Well 500,000 shares distribute themselves now on 549 owners.
Of the Cyberland AG one heard however so far few. Also otherwise the Magnatin can become dangerous from Hessen hardly an adversary. The second largest real estate shark in the play world follows in safe distance: Anshechung.com possesses nearly ten times as much as the competitor.

From: Iron Perth If you can handle babelfish.. Iron, as someone who can't switch off the original arcticle in my memory I am not sure how much of the meaning is carried over. A lot of the sentences are good for a hearty laugh, though - like always when applying babelfish to a longer text.

From: Pham Neutra I am wondering a little where the sudden interest in Second Life in the German mediascape is rooted. Or should Linden Lab really do some international PR? As far as I know there is a German community in SL with a bunch of members. Some might be journalists (as myself) or have connections to German media. And LL should do international PR, but they shouldn't forget that many netizens around the world don't have high-end computers and an 8 MB cable connection and barely meet the pc requirements, and thus they'll have a negative first SL experience. IMO there's some work in order on LL's side before they should try to attract more international users.

Well, considering how oddly some "outside" media have translated the SL experience, missing the obvious, etc., it's no wonder that poor lil BabelFish got a lil confused! hehehe
It's also amazing how readable it is with the errors and non-translateable terms in place. Language, it's for fun!

Congratulations to Anshe. It is quite an accomplishment to receive coverage in a magazine on the level of Der Spiegel, and it is wonderful for both Anshe and Second Life.
PS - next up, Aimee Weber in the Spiegel Catalog!

It's like Babelfish has been watching too much Silence of the Lambs. The German original is much more tame. Maybe thats a new busines idea: Have Babelfish translate a few boring business books and create a new genre of thrillers this way.

Firstly, I wish my German was better, because at one point, I was also determined to learn it after indulging in Kraftwerk.
I really like the line that says "Teacher Chung", because I used to address some of my teachers that way. Just brought back a memory.
Increasing international coverage of SL is nice...
Pham, yeah, like turning Stephen Coveys from all over into Stephen Kings!

*hides* de:bug is a cool magazine. It has not quite the readership of DER SPIEGEL Insofar an article about Second Life in the second magazine has quite some significance for Linden Lab. Even though it was focused on Anshe, I bet we will see some german newbies soon in the WA. I like the idea! (I am not looking forward to it, because I am eager to see Germans, BTW. I see more than enough of them everyday. LOL. But more residents of different nationalities will lead to a more diverse and interesting Second Life.)

I have a lot of problem with idiomatic rhetorical phrases in German. How would one say, "She sleeps with the Devil. Death to Anshe. Death to Land Barons"? ~Ulrika~

From: Flavian Molinari I agree. Really it's the same story, different magazine. No resident of Second Life will find much interesting information in this article (besides the fact, that Anshe now owns 200 sims, which at least I was not aware of). But thats no different from the many - admittedly - very similar articles about her business and Second Life appearing in other publications. What I found interesting - and very relevant for Second Life - was the coverage of our little world in the largest and most influential weekly newsmag of Germany. This is exciting - and good PR for Linden Lab - whatever the story itself.
