You know what to do.

*EDIT* - the third option may seem wierdly worded, but I left it as is because I think it's an applicable option for those who are more miffed about percieved favoritism on the part of LL towards the Suicide Girls group, than the actual name itself.

Suicide is a cool name, if it was publically available I'd create an alt just to use it

I find the last name Baphomet to be highly (and broadly!) offensive as it promotes Satanism and demon worship!

Wait, which name are we supposed to be offended over today?

I think "offensive" is the wrong word maybe.

I can see how it would hurt a lot of people's feelings and cause some unecessary grief, but the idea of banning a word because it upsets some people is wrong I think. The whole concept of "I find that word offensive, so you shouldn't be allowed to use it," is PC nonsense in my book and a flawed idea from the start.

I am generally in favour of allowing us to use any first and last names we want and to be able to change them at will just like in RL because also like in RL, when you change your name, you dont change your number, and there is always a database somewhere where the cops can look up what your "real" name is/was.

Midnight. There are way too many of them and they are all attention whores.

Yeah, I kinda went with the one being tossed around with the most frequency in the other thread(s), I would have prefered to elaborate a bit for more clarity, but there's a limit on how many characters you can use in a poll choice.

Other terms that could be interchangeable with "offensive" in terms of the poll question could be "broadly offensive", "disturbing", "troubling", "hurts my feelings", or any other phrase that roughly equates to getting one's panties in a bunch.

Please... Don't even try to compete with "Godel" on this. People like the Midnight name, but how many Godels are left? Hmm?

I'm offended by the word "offensive." It conjures up images of boobs and rock n roll and hitlers and all that.

I'm offended by the word poll, as a child i walked into a pole and sustained a black eye. As a result any permutation of the word poll causes me to curl into the foetal position muterring "the pain, the pain".
It has also left me with a pathological fear of the country Poland, shouldnt we change the term poll to vote, to protect myself, and others who have suffered similarly

What about those of us who don't like "vote" due to the natural association with chads....and we all know how awful thinking about chads is.

I think "ban" is the wrong word, too. Cory's "problem with" is less dramatic; "thinks it is/isn't a poor choice" would be even better.

I like your 4 choices, Cory, where you might have used two. Thanks for allowing that someone can have an opinion without assigning an emotional connotation to it (in this case being offended).

I voted for option three.

The problem I have with it being available is that other people are not so blessed as to be able to choose their last names. It's something I've wanted to do since joining SL yet can't.

LL needs to do away with the restricted last names and let us choose our own (within reason).

If there is a fear of rude or inappropriate names, it should be handled in the same way that first names or other 'offensive' behavior is policed.

I knew a guy named Chad once - he called me names in school. Please don't use the name Chad - it brings up painful memories.

I can't believe how big the flap is over this whole Suicide Girls thing. It's ridiculous. Oh well. What would the forums be without drama? Hmmm, and what will it be next week? Only time will tell.

School, school.... Siggy I take offense, having been molested by a large group of humpback whales many years ago. They mistook my whalesong relaxation tape as a come on.
Now the word school makes me break into a cold sweat, and hide in the dishwasher. Some respect, please. dude.

Word meanings change over time. I personally don't see the point in LL controlling names in any fashion; this is an 18 and over service after all.

btw, I heard the word "nerd" associated with someone who trolls MySpace looking for... *ahem*... minor trouble.

Should we now ban it?

LL should offer the word "Offended" as a last name as a catchall for people who tend to get their panties in a bunch over words.

I guess I kind of have an "issue" with this PC stuff because I agree I could have used better language. When one reaches for extreme words its obvious emotions are involved. :o

Although I have always agreed with the original reasoning behind "PC language" (to make language more accurate and less culturally/sexualy biased), I think the movement was swiftly derailed with those that have a different agenda. That of trying to make language "non-offensive" in general by abhoring/eschewing certain words and terms.

Such a program is doomed to fail and ridiculous to persue IMO. In fact I find the whole idea of it offensive. :)

Dianne, if you cast your mind back, political correctness became a big issue in the Thatcher era (at least in the UK).
I see political correctness as a political left herring .... it diverts us from real issues.

OMFG! I am SO offended by this word. THIS word offends me so much. No one should be allowd to use this word, because it offends me personally. This word should never be used by the public at large, because I find it offensive. The offensiveness of this word is overpowering and ruins my sense of wellbeing. Since I, myself, am offended by this word, it's use should be banned completely as to avoid offending me further and causing me undue stress because of it's extreme offensiveness. I am offended that I even have to speak of the offensiveness of this word, as the offensiveness is so obvious that it's offensive that there are people who question it's inherent offensiveness.

IMO it's not a question of offense, at least in the normal meaning of the word.

If someone has lost a close relative or friend through suicide the last thing they need is to see it as a last name in sl. It will be a constant pain, like a jabbing tooth.

How would people feel about 'Cancer' as a last name? Pretty good, huh? You could call yourself Breast or Ovarian.

I think it is tacky, to say the very least.

 Cancer as a last name? No problem. Is naming cancer as your astrological sign now too un-pc? It's a silly argument, Selador. More people die in car accidents than just about any other way, should be discourage use of the word car or automobile?

Edit: My grandfather died falling through a cellar door you heartless bastard! :D
