your luck could change if you invested more time being productive

I'm not here for the money, and I am rather productive actually.

If you happen to be in-game between 10am and 3pm SLT today, or most days in fact, let me know and I will gladly show you a project i have been working on (assuming the place I am "borrowing" to set it up is not being overriden by other people playing with their guns and stuff, even though it says "no combat";).

It may not impress you... you may just think it's crap... but it's all my own work, which is what matters. Admittedly, its still in its very early stages yet and isn't 100% complete but it gives you a very good idea of its final intention.

The offer is open to anyone else who wishes to see what I can "be productive" with.

I've heard of some people in SL finding a partner, getting together, and actually getting married in RL all because of SL. Why not advertise that?? Find love in SL? There's so many possibilities aside from making money that SL is losing out on other aspects of a market. They're only attracting people who want to make money.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that they still use that Business Week article, or that they are promoting the business angle, but I have also thought about this as a good marketing angle in the past.

What is your purpose in displaying that?

Perhaps, although I can't speak for PetGirl, that if you have conviction in what you're saying, you should post under your main account, not a faceless alt.

There are other reasons one might change accounts. For example, I had to cancel one account due to harassment that I could find no way to stop. Doesn't apply in this case, but that's not the only reason for using a new account.

The truth of a statement is not affected by the creation date of the account being used by the person who makes it

At any rate, their is no issue of conviction involved in labeling an unproductive exchange of personal attack what it is.

Lots of people agree with me on many points - even admitting sometimes that its hard to agree with me but they do - but I would say that means my finger is much closer to the 'pulse' of Second Life than many Lindens... and as what I do is purely for everyone's enjoyment rather than to make a profit I'd say that I was worth more to SL than you.

Lewis

If by lots you mean a few then yes I am sure you have a few people who agree with you as it is a statisical probability that no matter what you are whinging on about next that someone out there will agree with you.

If just one person agrees with me then I'm not alone in thinking it, am I?

I get quite a few people message me in game about things they read on the forums but don't feel able to post because of the way people who aren't afraid to speak out against "the way things are" being wrong are treated round here.

It is just too easy to criticise the words of others from the safety of total anonymity, regardless of how correct you may be.

One thing I do respect Lewis for. However unpopular his opinion may be at times, no matter how much heat he gets for it, he has the courage to stand behind his statements.

You may not be alone in thinking it, however, that still doesn't make you right.

Thankfully I saw beyond the marketing rubbish and decided to give SL the benefit of the doubt... and discovered there was plenty here for me to enjoy without even the slightest distraction of making my fortune here. How many people have been enticed here with dollar signs in their eyes, discovered you can't actually make any money without a lot of work, skill, and usually upfront capital - then go off elsewhere when they realise its not worth the bother?

It's quite interesting - in a moment of boredom, I decided to try secondlife.com in the Wayback Machine to see what came up.

And I found something interesting. SL has always been marketed with money in mind. In fact, the "list of goals" used on the beta site had "amass a vast fortune!" as the first one - ok, at that time it would have been in pure L$, but it was there.

But since around the second iteration of the website, continuing almost up to present day, all of the marketing pages have begun with a little stinger that people don't notice: "If you are a designer, programmer, or architect..." Notice: "if you are" one. Not, "if you want to become" one. So SL wasn't necessarily that much about enabling creativity after all. In fact, according to the very early versions of the website, for the alpha release you had to be vetted for 3DS/Maya experience in order to get in!

The marketing is in fact now more consumer oriented. The "make money" angle has been toned down. In fact, the front "What is Second Life" page doesn't even mention being able to create things - not in the flow text, anyway. It instead mentions getting to live surrounded by the creations of other people, which is presumably what is now going to be need to be upsold in order to get consumers into SL. Even clicking on 'The Creations" sends you to a page with links to learn about how other people are selling things and making movies; even the actual page about the creation process encourages you to buy stuff!

The similar thing runs throughout. The "Business Opportunities" page, for instance, instead of sending you to a page of Business Opportunities, sends you to a page listing categories of already established businesses.

So it does seem that the "make money easily" angle has been reduced quite a bit since I joined back in September.
