For folks here who own land.. is there any content you'd give up your land to buy?
It doesn't have to be content that exists right now.

It doesn't have to be content that exists right now. What possible Faustian bargain would get me to surrender my land for "content?" I can't even imagine.

The only thing I buy, at all, ever, is clothes, and only from Nephilaine, and only if I actually like them, and only about once or twice a year You'd be hard pressed to build something in SL of sufficient complexity to capture my interest for a significant amount of time. There's a reason why successful mainstream games take years to develop, and it certainly ain't the basic technological underpinnings such as the graphics and physics engines provided to you by SL. Besides, anything of that magnitude would probably not even be feasible with the current tools. For starters, we don't have meshes or any way to believably animate objects. You would have to spend massive amounts of money, do everything with avatars and attachments and... blech, I wish LL would realize how clunky this is and how little they would have to do in order to make SL a MMOG developer's dream

I had to sell my condo in Miami to afford Starax's wand, but it is totally worth it because I can do stuff like this:

There is nothing for which I would give up my land.... I don't do the barter system as it doesn't sell on the LindenX.

I'd probably swap my land for Starax's wand (which is the one single piece of content that I've found so far I'd even consider buying, if I socialised more I would have by now), but then that's really only becuase it's worth more than my land. I'd go out and get another 512 straight after the deal.

having persistant content requires having land - so that would be a self defeating thing to do.
what would I buy? anything made by Eddie Escher.
But none of that costs what I'd get for 3/4 of a sim.

Do walking, talking, live avatars count as content? Would anyone give up all their land for YOU?

Ok, here's why I asked. This is a table that came up when I did some math related to a discussion on Land and Economy: % of users % of average tier repaying average that average non-repaying tier user must pay 0% 0% 10% 11% 20% 25% 30% 43% 40% 66% 50% 100% 60% 150% 70% 233% 80% 400% 90% 900% 100% Impossible
I figure it's not really needed but a quick clarification: suppose there were only 10 users in SL. Two of them (ie, 20%) pay $20 tier each. If they're going to get that tier back, they need US$20 to come in from the other 8 users. So 8 people need to pay $40 total, which if divided evenly is US$5 each - that is, 25% of the $20 tier. As you can see, as it becomes possible for more people to make money in SL - that is, as SL becomes more attractive as a business platform - the amount that a non-business user has to pay, as a percentage of average tier, increases. The problem: if there is indeed (as folks on this thread have said) no content which is better value than land (except possibly for Starax's wand ), then if somebody comes to SL with a budget large enough that they could tier land, they're likely to be keener to spend that money to tier some land of their own rather than spending it on content. As you can see above, that means that it's going to be impossible to have more than 50% of SL's population earning money, because that would require the people putting money in to put in more money to buy content, than the average money-maker was paying in tier. If owning land is always better value, they probably wouldn't do that; if they have that much money to put in they'd be more likely to use it to tier land themselves. But 50% is a high proportion, so that would still be alright. Unfortunately, it's not quite as simple as that. The % above is a % of average tier, not minimum tier. To return to the "10 user" example above: suppose that the 2 users who want to make back their tier in the example owned private islands, and so were paying US$205 each monthly (premium + island). Now, the necessary money in is US$410 split between 8 people, which is US$52.50 each. That is enough for each of those 8 people to tier a smaller parcel of land themselves. So if that's their SL budget, and they can choose to spend it on land or content - then why would they spend it on content, given that here, people have stated there's no amount of content they'd trade for their land? It's looking strongly - to me at least - that in order to make SL better as a business platform, the main thing to do is to stop business being considered its killer app.

The majority of business applications require a decent sized consumer base to be installed in SL, not a load of content creators.

I'm trying to think of what I get from owning land that's worth giving up any content for. I used to say I'd never upgrade to Premium because renting is a better deal than owning, but ... what the hell ... I'm giving it a try. I'll let y'all know when I have an epiphany about the whole "owning land" thing...
