First, an obligatory gentle reminder to please be good to each other and not get into personal attacks--I'm seeing some posts that'd be better served in private discussion or in Off-Topic.

There's a really rich thoughtline emerging here...

I think one of the earliest shocks to me in the SL Forums was finding out some of the history that went on before--I heard these absolutely nightmarish tales of archived threads talking about "prim hoarding" and the drahma of money balls. And "Rants"? before my time. Well, today, we've got camping chairs of course and other things are different... but is it fair to say a lot of this is cyclical? Variations on a theme? Same tune, different remix?

But this is certainly something to discuss, with the craziness on here... sometimes I say nothing at all because I simply don't understand--yet. It's like that of being a cultural observer, then a participant. If we are going down, then I'm coming too though.

I wonder, hypothetically, speaking of observation, if the SL Forums were opened up to be viewed by those not already Resis? What if we could, say, Google the SL Forums easily? How might this change things?

Wasn't their some scifi story where people lived in a world where natural disasters were the norm? E.g. a farmer always had tornadoes out back and would just sigh when a cow got carried away.

I would have loved to be able to read the forums before signing up. A professionally done company website is one thing, but to get a more, uhm, realistic? picture, forums are invaluable - especially for such a difficult to classify software as SL. Honestly, after reading the website, I was more confused than anything by all this marketing blabla and very miffed at the lack of public readable forums that could hopefully have given me a clearer idea of what the people in SL actually do.

From what I've seen many people are one way in the forums and another in world. This fact was really hard for me to come to terms with, seeing friends have petty arguments over pretty much nothing and then turn around and be the nice sweet people I know in world.
Even angels can be vicious I guess.

from Eboni KhanLordfly's comment to Jonas, would be a personal attack.

It wasn't a personal attack to me. It wasn't creative enough.

They were open to the general public at one time - for some reason LL decided to require log-in, thereby restricting access residents only. Perhaps they didn't want potential customers reading dirty laundry.

Edit: I am all for the re-establishment of the old Rants section. Every community needs a relief valve.

Oddly the more control they put on ppl, the less ppl seem to like it. Torley asked if the forums were public would it change things? Of course it would. I'm not sure that would be a good thing as every tom, dick and harry, would be posting what ever they felt like. On the other hand there would be no way for LL to control a public forum. The number of ppl would simply win out.

In all honestly I haven't read much of anything that was worth taking note of lately. Perhaps that is because I too feel a need to post "fluff" over "substance".

At least by posting "fluff" I won't lose my IW assets. "Kiss the little bunny :) oops that was his bum" :D

I think Torley meant read-only (for the general public), and if my memory serves me correctly, that is how the forums were during my first few months in SL.

Torley's suggestion involved them being readable by non-SLers. TL said nothing about non-SLers being able to have posting access. That kind of selective access control is trivially easy in vBulletin (or just about any non-stupid web forum software out there, at that).

A disaster of biblical proportions! Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, and volcanos! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

(Anyone who takes that seriously deserves to. :p )

I agree. Seems like there's no room for a sense of humour here or any casual politeness anymore. This place used to be fun. Heck, I had crushes on folks here long time ago. Oh well, everything ends.

Back to hibernating. Or worse, I'll start me a blog. :p

Me too!! Me too!!

I met so many of my in-world friends in the forums (and, yes, I developed crushes on a few of them ;) ). They, these posters, possess in abundance all of the qualities I most admire. They are, at any one time, caustic, charming, clever, funny, analytical, intelligent, snarky, irreverant.

It would be a tremendous shame, in my opinion, to close down the General and Off-Topic forums--they function like an additional SL newspaper. If you want to see SL culture in action or just totally pissed off (as someone has already said, "warts and all";), General is the place to locate it.
