Simple, Not a hard question!
Should LL Name the continents
Lets say:
"When you zoom into part of a continents in the map, there will be a name in white naming each continent/region, it wont affect the names of the sim, just have a "Name Display".
So people will know what part of the grid they live in..

i definitely agree with this.. then again, i may be partial to this idea since i've been vying for this for several months now. not only should this be a feature for the continents of the main grid, but for private islands as well. there would have to be some criteria, possibly requiring 2 (or 3) or more sims to claim them as a continent.

Not only the continents should be named but the whole world aswell, instead of calling it main grid. I allways prefered Esselle, as the name of world.

Sounds like a good idea to me. It would add some more flavor to the world, and it wouldn't impact anything else, would it? (Who would feel harmed by a named continent anyway, eh? )

Northern Continent where the Iris Moth Temple was discovered = Heterocera Atoll.

I was wondering about that the last time I was looking at the map. Before I would look for the sliver of sims leading to the New Continent to orient myself. But now, I've often confused the New Continent with Anshe's cluster. And when you zoom out, wow, it's a mess. It's getting harder to tell where the main land ends/begins.

Torley, i've seen you mention Heterocera Atoll before, but is this sprouting from the flowerbed of your own mind or is that an unofficial official name? sort of like Nova Albion is the 4 city sims or more like Esselle as the mainland, a name just used by a large portion of the community. (and were you the first to suggest that?)
either way, i like both name suggestions. Esselle would be a befitting name for the original "gridinent" and Heterocera Atoll is simlarly fitting.
and as a suggestion to Anshe, perhaps Arcadia as a name for her artist themed continent/gridinent?
and as far as the display of said names, maybe they would be better served when zoomed out on the map instead of when zoomed in? i imagine it might be a little more tidy in appearnace that way, yes?

I really would like to see geographic cultures and areas emerge. We have a few hints of this happening: Nova Albion, the old regions, the mainland, the new continent, the new new continent, Ansheland, the snow sims, etc. This is very interesting to see these areas and how your home fits in, or to be able to get to really know an area by constantly exploring it. I like feeling like I'm part of a world, a bigger place, and to see where I am in that world. Otherwise SL is just a faceless mass of land servers on which you bounce around.

The official name for the main grid is (as recently mentioned) Agni. And in reply to another messageAnshe's continent is already called Dreamland, I believe. Alliez and Tony have a non-contiguous "continent", perhaps the dAlliez Archipelago? The mainland is Mainland, and I think it'll be hard to budge North and South Continent as names.

Khamon does have a point.... they may not be continents per se... but there are loose names already for geographic regions.
Isabel, Wingo, Orient and Galinas are located in the area originally known as the "Hidden Lakes Reigon" for example.

I will not impede the Naming Juggernaut. I, however, do not care one bit whether named or not. I have little trouble orienting on the map and I don't know the names of 90% of the sims. I orient by what I see as very unique geographic features throughout the map. I really only know the names of sims I have previously held land in for lengthy periods of time. I also do not hold that anyone else views it this way. So go on with your naming, but I still won't know what your talking about.

This is a terrible idea. We will have long arguments about the names, people's feelings will be hurt, there were be accusations of favoritism, false rumors about what the names mean, people will rearrange the letters and prove it's FIC.
And for what?
I think sometimes we all forget just how petty and childish we are here !

As someone still trying to grasp the geography in general, I'm still for this idea. Anything to grab on to and feel pride is not a bad thing (so long as, of course, it doesn't start wars). Giving names to sets of sims - even continent wide ones - gives a further feeling of involvement to people who own property or rent there (commercial or residential).

Well, consider how such names get started. It's usually the mapmaker that does it. Heh, it's his map anyway. So my guess is that we will all be living in Cadroe-land eventually, regardless of what the first inhabitants named it...

I personally don't care what any of the names are, more than I care what new regions are named. I'm just in favor of some geography and sense of locality.

Well the mainland sims, LL chooses the name anywayz.. i never heard someone complain about that... there should be polls and stuff for us to vote in the names they provide for each region. I agree we should give each area a name, it gives a more "Professional" look, instead of squares and people calling it just a "grid". "Lets go that that little continent that no one knows the name yet"

i sit corrected

i forgot about Anshe's land being called Dreamland.. in which case, it would be cool to see that represented on the map.
and where was this Agni name mentioned? i don't recall seeing it before. and what area does that cover? i'm lost on this one..
good point about how it could cause more chaos if we actually had continent naming going on. well, for the "main grid" anyway. i may agree with Esselle and Heterocera Atoll, but that doesn't mean everyone would like it.. there could be a huge faction of SLers who might prefer Big Bad Main Grid and Crazy Northern Continent. *shrug* ..but i still think it would be cool to see continent names.
