Ban lines... free, effective, can't get any cheaper.

And, if used to ban EVERYONE, a downright public eyesore. But yeah...it's about as cheap a ban solution as one can get!

To the OP: I'm not sure what your price point is, but the system I use is Psyke's Home Defense orb and it's really not all that pricey for the quality and features you get (I think it's about 500L). It's a pretty smart little gadget; just use it wisely (i.e. the instructions ask that you keep Foreign Land Safe option ON and I strongly suggest you do so the thing doesn't end up attacking people on land you don't own).

I use psyke's orbs at the club, I use psyke's orbs at my home, I keep a couple spare PDS orbs in my inventory just incase I need to secure someplace I don't normally need to. L500 from his shop; Psyke's Defense Systems. they are a little complicated to setup at first, but if you take 20 minutes to read the instruction well worth the effort.

General advise,
30 second scan and warning time before eject
Use Land Eject for "weapon"
set range as small as possible, I use 50Meters, but I'm on a huge plot, 30 is more hten enough, normal talk rnge is 20 meters, so that gives you a 10 meter completely private zone around the orb.

Nobody's asked the obvious question yet of why a brand new player of less than a couple of weeks old feels the need to have a security system in the first place.

What is it that people do that attracts them so much grief that they need to install security in a world where nothing can be stolen and you can't lose anything by being 'killed'.

Just ignore Lewis, Ferdnidad.

He lacks the capacity to understand when people want a little privacy with SL friends or for their land.

The ban lines aren't effective unless you build on the ground. And who wants to do that when you can have a castle in the sky?

Maybe they just want to change clothes in private.

OP: Psyke's does the job. Set it up with at least 10 seconds warning. Don't use "teleport home" as weapon if you can avoid it. "Land eject" is good enough (and not too intrusive) on the mainland.

Why not just turn on the most effective security - use CTRL Q - and do us all a favour.

Because I can't relax in my nice hottub on my skybox with my sl girlfriend then. On the game I paid to use. On the land I paid for.

How about you turn off SL if me exercising my paid for land rights offends you?

I just use the ban lines... 50M height isnt a terrible eyesore by any means and it keeps away anybody I dont want on my land. Good enough for me!

I have as much right to be in SL as you do, and continue to exercise that right whether you like it or not. Especially if you don't like it.

Yeah but you have no right to be on my land:) And I have every right to remove you from it and anyone else I like, at any height, and whether I am on or not.

What I would eventually like to do (when I finally buy some land) is to build a store at ground level on my land and have my private living quarters in a skybox above my store.

Would I be able to secure my skybox using Psykes home defense system while still allowing anyone to enter my store? If not is there any security system that would allow this kind of split access setup?

There's nothing on your land to interest me anyway. I've already looked.

I don't think I need security right now.. but I would sure like one of those items that let you know who is around. I have a multi-gadget (seldom wear it). What I would like is something I can set in my home that records who has been there and who is in listening range. That way I have names if I need to file reports. It is not always easy to get them in the middle of a griefer event or if someone is hiding and griefing you. *sigh*

Anyway.. any suggestions?

You can get Power Products Black Box Security for only L$1 from SL EXCHANGE
http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=22735
or the Power Products shop in SL.

It only works on land you own, not group land. It is very basic but will give you increased privacy at an incredibly low cost. As I recall the radius around the box is adjustable, it will not work past the edges of your property lines, and it uses TP home so it is in complaince with the TOS.

If you can afford more, the Psyche Home Defense system offers a lot of flexiblity and value for the money.

To learn how to build special shapes, go to the Ivory Tower of Primatives. Look for it in Seach places.

Psyke's Security Orb... you'd not wanna live on the mainland without it! It costs 500 L and is worth it!

You can set it to Push, Eject, or TP Home. The push option works very well <evil grin> but the Lindens kinda frown on that. I'd suggest TP Home. Make sure not to set the radius too big either.

When I was living on the mainland, I put all my adjacent neighbors in as "safe" and had the Push option turned on. It worked well for me...

There are free AV detectors and list makers available in SL IM me for a copy.

The AV detectors send you a message to alert you that someone is nearby.

The list detectors can be set to only list AV's that come within a distance that you set.

I will set these out free to take a copy at my store, at the location indicated below.

Yes, Psykes works for that. The land below my skybox is open but the area around my skybox is closed.

All of the security systems that I am familiar with allow you to designated a distance around the security device, usually spherical, withing which it detects and acts only on avatars that enter that sphere. So if you set on up on the floor at the middle of your skybox home, for a distance of 30 meters, it would protect the area 30 meters above, below and around the security object. Many like the Psykes will allow you to set up a larger scanning distance zone where it will warm people away, before they enter the teleport home/ push or expell zone.
