After a long and prosperous run in the past few months, I think its probably safe to assume that the vast majority of the gun industry is dead.

I'd expect shops to begin packing it up and packing it in soon after the new release.

Honestly, I can't say that I feel bad for 'em.

Hasta la Vista!!!

No way! I still am going to use my guns, well that is when my friends let me shot them. I can't stand to shot someone, I don't want to hurt their feeligns or what not, well unless they upset me, than I guess its ok.. LOL

Do you like, wander around all the time not knowing what your talking about or is this a recent development?

The best gun makers on the market often have a single push option, several cage options, and on top of that a dozen other fun little irritants that have nothing to do with push....

I was hailing the Desert Eagles as the best guns on the market and until a recent update they never had a push, cage, or anything else grief wise. They were just an amazing shield break, with awesome detailing and semi smart bullets.

Cow Hand, have you ever been to a combat sim? Seriously, the gun industry in SL is hardly dead -- the only people affected by today's change will be those who want to cause trouble.

Hate to tell you, pal, but orbit is dead, too.

Orbit just uses push.

There are only 2 combat sims to my knowledge. There are tons of other SL sims. So, really, I would still expect gun shops to be hurting.

It mainly affects the yadni freebies. You can bet the psitek will have a working replacement for orbit soon enough.

And I won't even go into what I can do with orbz that would make your toes curl.... well I'll use two words: Furry Lover

And leave it at that. You can guess the results of that fun.

Why? the push thing is bastardization of 'weapon' idea to begin with, plus it's not like there won't be places where this ability is still enabled.

That push being orbit....

Didn't even have an orbit and became overnight the most popular pistol in sl....

I have 4 orbits, all of them part of comprehensive weapons packages with often 10-20 other options than orbit. You took a single toy away, meanwhile anyone with orbz can still turn you into a walking dog penis.

I read back some, didn't some people say the same thing about the shield industry once phantom was done away with and yet somehow every time I go to luc aubrets shop I see dozens of unpacked protek boxes on the floor....

Don't you worry, us gun nuts are still here, and still buying.

I have a full combat sim online at "Carnage Island". As we finish our combat system gun players are welcome to use custom combat systems, of which there are several. To the north is "DeathMatch Island" which will be the home to three maps for combat, a Far Cry style, a Counter-Strike style, and some sort of alien style, perhaps like a Halo map.

One of the great things about Second Life is the customization that can be done. A basic combat system is the start, but after that you can make your own builds that play within the system but of your design. Imagine a standard for a semi-automatic weapon in terms of damage and rate of fire. Now imagine dozens of gun builders constructing awesome takes on the look while dropping in settings that make the gun work within the combat system.

Weapons were part of Second Life when I started, I read ahead of time about health, safe-zones, teleport home and the like. When I joined I saw a lot of creativity and wanted to bring those wanting the fun of combat and the breadth of Second Life's choices to a place with people who felt the same. These changes are for those not interested in being in the middle of a fire-fight. And for those who do, there will be places to go and fun to be had.

Disable flying for say half of the sim and this could be fun...

Thanks Lupus, and yes, flight is disabled already at Carnage, though there i a viewing area as I hope to let people watch the battles and with a finished system encourage other to build arenas. Check it out when you can, Kyran Nyak did an awesome job on this first map!

I'll be looking for builders after the grid comes back up, and hope these two islands will be a start for those who'd like to start with traditional multiplayer gaming and then ease into all the wonder we've come to expect from Second Life!

But i can rest assure that if a griefer tries to cage me on my own land i can orbit them. ;p

What I spent the most time on when I was developing my launcher and the projectile it fires:
- Shield breaking
- Homing w/ motion prediction
- System-wide integer flag encode/decode, which took some careful design

Least time spent:
- GUI (I had already written a GUI layer and creating new menus was trivial)
- Orbit/Crater
- Push

You can probably get a generic pushgun for free somewhere. I doubt anyone is spending L$1000+ just to be able to super-push someone else. Same with orbiters, there are free scripts floating around out there. People pay good money for arms because they want to get back at that snivelling jerk who has a fancy shmancy shield. My launcher has a lot of options and sophisticated technology, and that's what I point at when I write my sales literature.

Why do people bother with guns? With all the uber-powergaming superweapons out there, it's like bringing a...well...knife to a gun fight. Who needs a pistol when you could just as easily drop a nuke or summon a meteor? Is it just an image thing?

Only pussies with inferiority complexes use those. Some of us want to be civilized when we lay the smack upon thee.

You could make a highly effective gun in a prim box but it would be boring. Feel is extremely important and also very hard to get right, people really underestimate that until they actually try to make a gun. You can make an extremely powerful weapon easily yes, it's a walk in the park to make a box that would kill everyone in 96M but it would be boring as hell, people prefer to be personal.

I don't think anything about the gun industry is dead although I've only just entered it. From the little I can find out about other makers sales I can say the market is not all that large but has more dedicated buyers.

Yeah, nothing says 'civilized' and 'personal' like a gun with seeker bullets and shield breaking.

Come on...use a sword!
