It's no wonder the Resident Moderator program is having so much trouble. From: Jeska Linden A few comments on this topic…
The ResMod program is a new experiment to make the SL Forums a true community project and to put Residents in leadership positions where they are able to help define and shape a strong, positive community; as has been the goal of Second Life since its inception. The future success of Second Life will depend on the degree to which people are willing to participate not only as members of the community, but also as leaders.
Because Second Life is not a game, but instead a vivid, growing virtual space, leadership is very important. We are trying to give Residents the opportunity to take care of themselves and while we don’t to “police” the forums ourselves, we also don’t want to let the forums languish in anarchy without attention. With your help, we will continue to make refinements to the program, until we have found the balance - please keep the feedback coming.
This week I’ve witnessed a great deal of unhappiness with the ResMod program and the idea of moderation in the forums in general. This unhappiness seems to be directed, unfairly, at the first group of moderators who are helping us with this experiment. I would suggest to anyone who has a strong reaction to this program to take time to reconsider and try to give it a chance, at least long enough for us to learn more about what works best for the whole SL Forum community.
Sometimes in the heat of a passionate discussion you may be tempted to say something that upon reflection you will regret. Please try to be constructive in your feedback about the program, which should help us all make the best choices in the long run. Jeska's response to the trouble is intensely disappointing. Rather than take responsibility for the inconsistency of the approach or lack of preparation in execution, she spends a very long post accusing the forums at large of being impatient, unfair and quick to anger. I saw a lot of excuses made but no admissions of rough spots. I think a true leader would have said something along the lines of "Listen, this thing hasn't gone on perfectly. It's new. Please direct your frustrations at me and the community team -- we could have prepared a little better. Please don't take your anger out on the Resident Moderators. They're just trying to help us help you, the community." We didn't get that, though. We get Jeska scolding us, telling us we've been bad little monkeys who need to be better if we're going to have this whole thing work. There will always be friction to change. But when you have some of the company's staunchest supporters turning on their heels to say "Oh, hell naw. This isn't cool," that really should tell you something. We have people who NEVER agree with eachother all saying basically the same thing: This is a half-baked, non-working solution. The reception and perception of this event is directly related to the presentation and execution rendered by the community team, with Jeska holding the flag. That we have seen such astonishing rejection of this idea comes down to how they got the job done. Obviously, this mechanism is not serving our needs. The solution is to take ownership of that reality. Not to accuse the community of being unworthy of this grand new idea. The half-hearted suggestion to keep the feedback coming is completely contrary to the rest of the post, which rejects the feeling of ill-will and discontent that have necessitated its posting in the first place. Perhaps we should take it to mean, "Keep the feedback coming until it matches what I want to hear." While I have been pretty amused by the entire event, I could not help myself from commenting on this obvious lapse in leadership and shocking lack of ownership for a problem that was created by the community team. If the leadership of the community team is this lacking, how can we blame the resident moderators for their actions? Excellence flows from the top. The top really needs to get their act together on this. Reaction not what you wanted? Must not have done it right. You can't make a salad and then blame it for not being a pecan pie.

I rarely read posts that don't include pictures, but in this case i made an exception. I feel strongly that: a: we're rapidly approaching the dead horse event horizon. b: there could have been a more considerate way of expressing your opinions; Jeska is a bot but she runs off a commodore 64, and i SWEAR they have feelings. c: there should have been a pie option, PER COMMUNITY STANDARDS.

From: Taco Rubio it jumped the shark for me when the attacks got personal. /shrug. * bans Taco from the SLuniverse forums as a precautionary measure to prevent him from making any future "jump the shark" references there, which would disrupt the delicate balance of ranting and posts about Rollercoaster Tycoon cracks. * PS - Enabran, though harsh, well said. Lecktor and Taco, GET A ROOM.

Sorry, but I think you've gone off the deep end on this one. From: Enabran Templar ... I think a true leader would have said something along the lines of "Listen, this thing hasn't gone on perfectly. It's new. From: Jeska ... to put Residents in leadership positions where they are able to help define and shape a strong, positive community... From: Enabran Templar ...We didn't get that, though... Sounds the same to me. Also, her entire post was about leadership and how to encourage it and your dumping on her for... lack of leadership? I think she put it *way* more politely than I would have. I have been on the forums for the better part of a year and I don't think I have seen such an absolute flood of childish petulant behavior from otherwise intelligent and wise people. There are a lot of people I respect greatly that are acting like complete idiots over this res-mod thing.

My point wasn't that she wasn't being supportive of the ResMods. My point was that she wasn't admitting responsibility for the problem and was instead blaming the community. Her entire thing was cheerleading the effort, rather than admitting they had fumbled its introduction. Read again. edit: Put simply, Jeska said, "Don't be crappy to the ResMods. This is your fault." She should have said "Don't be crappy to the ResMods. This is our fault." And what you posted was... OMG ENABRAN SHE SAID "Don't be crappy to the ResMods," JUST LIKE YOU ASKED WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT

We didn't get that, though.
I think the RezMod program is about shifting responsibility, something a good leader wouldn't do. You can find the motivation behind most cooperate decisions by following either the money trail or lazy trail. In this case I believe it's a little of both. I believe your comments on this would have been a much better way to handle this situation.

About the leadership in general. Jeska is the defacto spokesperson, I suppose, but it really goes back to leadership at the top of the chain. There's something missing in the culture at LL and the end result of that is Jeska being marched out here to tell us how much we suck for not complying with their idea of good citizenship (instead of, well, leading us to that place).
