I was fiddling around with my profile the other day after getting some new screenshots of my avatar, and I started thinking about what I really wanted to say. Typically I like to have something friendly and welcoming in my first page, then put my friends in my Picks tab. My RL page is pretty direct - I prefer not to mix RL and SL except with my closest and most trusted friends (It's not paranoia if they're really after you!) I've seen some startling profiles before -- the one I remember the most had a very dark piece of digital art instead of a self-portrait and a series of poems under Picks. It was good enough that I found myself staring at it for a while and I thought it said a great deal about the artistic bent of the resident. It turns out they were VERY nice in IMs. Then I see others which read like a Myspace introduction. Friends are mentioned, usually, or just "I'm friendly, say hi!". Escorts sometimes advertise their services. Or the resident declares undying eternal love for their current cybersweetie (sometimes changing every 2-3 weeks) in the most florid, hopelessly romantic language they can contrive. Whatever floats your boat. But my question is just curiousity, mostly -- how many of you use your profile as a personal introduction to strangers? How many include something about "No drama"? (and does it really keep drama away?) How many of you just want to hug your friends or make a personal statement about your tastes? It comes down to this: What do you see as the primary purpose of your profile? Why do so many people NOT have their avatar pics in their profile? Is that a TSO thing?

It would be great if we could have a 'Business Section' on our profiles. Anyone who spends a large fraction of their in-world-time on their SL Business, is likely to have information all over their front page, picks, etc.
It would also be nice if we had a higher character count too; there is only so much you can say with the current limits.

It doesn't matter. Only the avatar name is searchable anyway. We can not search for each other by dates, group names, checkboxes, picks, private notes, or any other tidbits of data they may add to the interface. Here's a reference to the last time I bothered to ask about it.

For other people, I usually put things I need to remember. I even have an order for a pizza with a phone number and the price . Other things are business related. Like if someone says something I need to remember, I put it in their profile. Or if I need to remember someone's name, I put it in my profile in the notes.

I have my overly romantic ode to my cyber-sweetie (errr..sweaty as he puts it) and it's been there for a LONG time now. We're hoping to meet sometime in the near future. I can't wait *jumps up n down* We're not into the 2 - 3 week kinda relationships. I also have a reference to my PICKS section...where yes, there's MORE of the dedications to him. What can I say, I'm a sappy wench and he deserves it all. I LOVE YOU W!!! *cheesy grin* I also have my business in my PICKS. By the way...blatant, self-agrandizing plug...if any of you need any quality and yet VERY affordable FORMALS...come to BELLISSIMA! Just plug it in FIND. First life has stats and a rl piccie. As for piccies in Front page...I've got one. Always had one. I dunno 'bout the rest of the peeps without one. Maybe they just can't take good piccies in game I KEED I KEED! Laters peeps. From: Cindy Claveau It comes down to this: What do you see as the primary purpose of your profile? Why do so many people NOT have their avatar pics in their profile? Is that a TSO thing? - My 2nd Life profile has the times I'm usually online and some background on my character. - My picks are just blank shots of a few of my land parcels, but I've got some plans for them, when I have the time... - My 1st Life profile. Ugh. I had intended it as a polite indication of what is and isn't okay when I'm online, but I think that it's either too subtle or people just don't check 1st Life that often (I rarely check 1st Life, personally). Right now it lists my gender, marital status, and general geographic location, and says very clearly that I'm not looking for RL romance, but damn I still keep encountering people who push for more RL information and contact than I'm interested in giving. I'm currently deciding whether I should simply clear 2nd Life out altogether or just be more direct- but I'm afraid of sounding nasty if I do the latter. Regarding 1st Life profile photos. The main reason I don't look at 1st Life is it's often a let-down. I like staying in the 2nd Life mindset where everyone is beautiful and perfect and bigger (or smaller) than life.

Nothing pisses me off faster than someone IMming me, first or second thing, "ASL?" or "Where are you IRL?". If I wanted them to know, it'd be in my profile. I'm too polite, though, I'll give them a general area and then PRAY they're not close by One guy thought since he was within a couple hours of the location I gave, we should meet. I barely knew him. ~sigh~ Then I have seen a couple of people who include URLs for their myspace info (including tons of personal real life info). Personally I don't care to give any potential stalkers a clue. But then I've been online for a long time, too, and could probably tell you stories that would curl your toes. I use my profile as a kind of ... "profile" of who I am as a person. Strangely many people don't. I find that even those that use it to talk about their sweetie or some poems and pictures inadvertantly say a lot about themselves anyway, but I wish they would use the picks page to do that because that's really what its for. I understand those that want the profile to reflect their buisness more as they view it more like an entry in an address book than anything else, but most of the suggestions I have seen along those lines go way too far into buisness world for me. People don't seem to realise that there are lots of folks that don't fit into the "SL is a Buisness Application" mode. My pet peeve is that LL announced almost six months ago tht the profiles would be viewable on the web and therefore searchable, yet it hasnt happened. I don't see what is so hard about this but then i am not aware of the workings of the back end of the system.

My profile is a brief intro to my try to explain to people why, exactly, I act the way I do in SL. Actually, it really dosent explain anything at all. But it was fun to write. =)
I also like to throw up some random, but meaningful quotes there from time to time.
Oh and I have an RL pic of myself, which I also update from time to time.

I used to have some little tidbits about myself in my General profile, but sadly, those have been replaced with something along the lines of "For the love of god stop spamming me with invitations to pay you rent! Don't spam me! Yes, that means you!" Not in those exact words. I still get spammed, but not as badly now. My picks have my own business in them, a few cool places I recommend, and not much else. My first life profile has a picture of a 'demon cat' I GIMPed, because it amuses me, and a quote from a book I love. I think the two put together say more about me than a first life picture and a blurb about myself would. More often than not, I forget all about my own profile, and rarely remember to check anyone else's either. If I need to look someone up for something, that's the only time I look at profiles, to see if there's any useful or pertinent information.

Most IMs I get from people that I have not spoken to before, are contacting me for Business reasons. Those who want to know more about 'me' can soon do so in-world I think it would be great if we could have a more fleshed-out profile; a Business tab has got to be a popular addition, I would have thought.

My friends know if they read my profile, they can gauge my mood on any given day. Not that I'm incredibly moody, and if I have drama going on they already know about it, but still...helps to give them a heads up before they IM me to say "I'm tping to you!!!" I used to have Mulch in my profile, or my "dedication to Mulch" or whatever, which often changed, also based on how sweet I was feeling toward him or how pissed I was at him, but he's not in SL anymore (except in my Partner box), so that's useless. Now I just take a photo every day and post it in my profile, along with the lyrics to whatever song I'm into atm. In Picks I put in tabs for all the places I shop regularly because it's easier for me to open my own profile and tp to the store than to open Find, wait for it to load, and find the owners of stores that way. Every so often you do find business owners who don't post their own business in their Picks tabs. I've also started taking photos of me wearing whatever the designer makes that I bought, along with a little plug for the store because if I like what I buy, I want to tell people about it My first life tab is reserved for poem fragments I'm working on. Yeah, I wish it was longer too. Not everybody writes concise bits of information in their profiles--I would even love to have a blog in my profile since my friends check it so regularly (archivable would be even better).

I use my profile to give people a little insight into my purpose for being in SL ~which happens to be to explore virtual art~. I figure if anyone looking at my profile is either in SL for the same reason or finds it interesting that they might start a conversation with me. I'm always a little disappointed when I come across a blank profile. I wish there was a way to bookmark a profile to go back to. Depending on the amount of chat and IMing going on I don't always get enough time to peruse other people's Profiles. There's a lot more about the profiles that I would change but i'm sure that's really for another thread.

Song lyrics. Yes, I am *that* unoriginal, but I find the poetry I write a little, um, off-putting. I recall having seen the profile of someone who railed against the use of song lyrics in this way. Who was that? And a quote from Armath and a quote from Taco. As for 1st life stuff--I made a list of my obsessions. The list changes from time to time. I had my RL photo in there until pandastrong started calling me "five-pixel Roo." I took it out hoping that I would eventually find a better photograph of myself. So far, no luck.

I've been toying with putting my RL photo in the 1st life section, but I don't know if I'm ready for that. I had a RL picture in for a while (an old one ), and so did my best friend Garnet and I can't recomend it. It completely changes what people think about you and the way they treat you, I find. Everyone in SL is so beautiful, if your RL picture is not, it's a big minus. If (like you ), the RL picture is cute, it seems to just attract loonies and stalkers. Even outside of romatic relationships, if someone actually knows you are an older woman (or I suppose a young man for that matter), they treat you the way they would treat that type of person in RL. As long as they dont know, they have to suspend judgement. And not being judeged in that way can often be a good thing.
