You might try looking in the Employment Ops and Help Wanted forum for starters.

I'd make a list of the skills you can offer people. Don't focus on how you need money, focus on what you can do that's worth money.

Contact people who might need an employees, business folks. Club owners and such.

Learn how to build, make furniture or clothes, or script. Or become a land baron. You won't make money with a job.

Well put, Viv. Most 'jobs' in SL don't even cover the cost of keeping your computer switched on, let alone your internet connection. FWIW, I get building jobs in SL but I have my most fun hanging out with friends doing crazy stuff.

Apparently you apply to Vasudha Linden, our 'economic' 'guru' who is 'here' to 'look' at the 'currency depreciation' and apparently has a master plan to combat it with 'jobs for the rest of us'.

And no. This is seemingly not a joke. *sigh*

At least you can think about being a stripper...not even a real option for guys (yeah I know you *can* be a stripper or an escort as a guy...you just don't get paid often)

Have you not been paying attention, CS?

Well, here's the story so far:

Back at the beginning of February, we had an announcement about a new Linden who would be exclusively dealing with economic analysis, and these tasks would include "calculating the GDP of the economy, stipend policy analysis and establishing guidelines for a robust monetary policy."

Vasudha introduced herself, with this cheery message that stated "I've been hired to do economic analysis and make policy recommendations. I am specifically looking in to the issues of currency depreciation in SecondLIfe right now. Since I've just started the process of gathering data, it'll be a few weeks before I have any results to share. Meanwhile, I welcome your suggestions and comments."

Her appointment was met by hopeful greetings from residents with similar economic concerns, many taking their time to spell them out and offer suggestions. All were met with stony silence.

The announcement also said "Vasudha will be checking in on the Land and Economy forum, so please feel free to engage her in discussing your ideas for the Second Life economy.". But so far this has proved impossible, despite various people asking specifically (like here , and here.)

Actually, Vasudha seems to be actively working hard at ignoring everyone (probably intensive Linden training in non-communication has helped here).

It seems, so far, that her grand contribution to date is this thread asking for suggestions for jobs for unskilled labourers or people who dont wish to apply themselves.

Because that'll fix our economy.

I would say I expected more, but honestly, from LL, I don't.

Maybe it's just because trying to communicate with the forums on such a wide spanning and controversial topic along with the way the forums are... would scare the crap out of anyone to the point they ignored that part of the job.

Bet they pulled her in by saying exactly what the job entailed. After hiring, then they mentioned, oh yeah we want you to keep up communication, as you progress, with the residents in the Land & Economy forum. :D

I teach a newbie class at the Spa sometimes and what I tell everyone who comes is not to get a job to make money. Jobs in second life don't pay you enough to buy anything really. The very BEST you can expect for unskilled labor (and I'm talking about hosting, say, a dance that doesn't require you to know anything about a game or come up with trivia questions, or teach a class, etc) is about 200L for 2 hours of work. If you suck, and you will until you get the hang of it, you'll get discouraged and quit after the first few times because people will show up to your event and then they will leave. Or they won't show.

If you actually have skills, like you know how to host events, or you are a DJ or you can come up with questions for trivia etc, then you can make more. But not much.. maybe a 300 or 400L for two hours of work -- unless you are a DJ and can command more.

So really -- a job in SL doesn't pay much and won't get you much. You can buy more linden than that for five bucks. I encourage all new players who come to my class to spend 20 bucks on lindenX and to work if they enjoy the work -- but work because its fun -- not for the money.

This is what I think, and I've always thought so. You cannot have an economy if people don't need to eat and travel. An economy is simpy an extension of human needs. Thus, there is no labour market in SL, no actual "jobs" and no real enterprise. Consequently, SL is not a game about making money, let alone real money (although of course, a few people manage to do this anyway from the few superficial sectors there is). Neither should SL be considered a glorified chat-room (it would be boring as hell). SL is, or in order to stay interesting it must be, an open ended role-playing game.
