From: Delta Czukor The difference between things like WoW and SL is that WoW has just one server per a few thousand users. In SL, the world is split up into a server for each sim/region more or less. There isn't one big huge mega server running the whole SL world, while in WoW, there is. Thus, LL can just keep adding more sims to support more users. Yeah, that's how I understand it. There a many, many servers running what is described as the Main Grid.

From: Hobonicus Engel Observation: Each of the simulators running in SL is technically a server, so this has happened several hundred times already.
Numbers: Regardless of user count, EVE Online has a game world that is exponentially larger than that of SL and concurrency of around 25000 players online daily, and yet they still only have one shard.
Also: Does the Teen Grid count as a seperate shard? shard? you mean server right? if so that's only because EVE is run by a vet company, I doubt a n00b company like Linden lab could pull off 25k players at a time. or afford that much on one server.

Well, it's too late to worry: SL is run on hundreds of servers. A ton of computerboxes hooked up to the intertron, each oozing with the sweet, sweet nectar that is information. I should stop talking like this.

From: Dyne Appin yeah your making computer language sound sexy Computer language is sexy. For example: sex++;ooh...shivers. That out of the way, yes, it is a fact that LL runs SL on hundreds of servers. I believe the ratio of sim to server is sloser to 1 than it is to zero, but I'm not sure of the actual stats. Void sims are usually multiply hosted on a single server. But the raison de'etre of this place is some kind of distributed computing. Except, well, the asset server. But best to sweep that under the rug for now.

I love the smell of community in the morning. Try not to abuse the new guy for asking questions. It's not like he brought up SL sex or stipends or something. I know you are all Lords of the Webbz, but man

You have no clue who these people are. Ever hear of RealNetworks? Macromedia? Novell? Electronic Arts? Sega? Senior management team members at Linden Lab have come from all these companies and more. n00b company, indeed. P2

this really is not a problem.
think of each sim as its own web sight. each server can handle its own residents with out effecting any other server. There really is no limit to the amount of residents that second life can handle. Second life was engineered to be expanded just like the Internet there really is no limit to the size. I think the real problem may lie in people not hardware second life may grow so big that policing it will be come harder and harder to do. This is where i see people owning there own grids that are connected to all other grids and doing there own policing of there own little part of what will become the second life metaverse.

And yet, even with Eve's 'vet' skillz... they still have an hour or more of downtime every night. (Shard = 1 parallel universe, not 1 server.) Should multiple shards be used? It depends on: 1) How you divide up the work of having users interact with each other, and how many people they can support in one place at a time. 2) How much data you track for each player and how often that data needs to be updated, and how well your database is at keeping up with those demands. 3) Whether or not you have geographically beneficial shards closer to some players... or different themes/rules (pvp? pve? rp?) ... or different languages. Because of how SL stores and tracks citizens and objects, the asset/identity databases may not be limited to one single massive database, and by using several massive databases they can continue to grow the grid reasonably safely. How many online players can SL support at once? Who knows. As long as they keep paying for more bandwidth their model has a lot of extensibility built into it.

If you want to get technical about it, a good amount of "void" sims, or the squares that are usually filled to the brim with water are, I believe, run four to a box.
