Ok maybe they're avs and this is a commecial like you see on TV.. you know:
"This is the forest - but they just created a shitload of lag by switching to Ginko" Or maybe they're trees and I can't see the Forest for them... ..or maybe I've been at work too long and need some coffee.. _____________________

They're avatars. Apparently Ginko ATMs track who's in the area once every 10 mins. I confronted GF with my concerns along with the staff of The Forest. He claims its for the purpose of generating maps, statistical data, and to make item delivery easier for when he opens his Ginko store website. To me thats the same thing as installing spyware. Chad Stratosky was given the ATM code to tear apart. In the mean time I'm holding off getting a Ginko ATM until I get word from Chad that its safe and actually being used for GF claims its being used for and doesn't cause lag.

I don't get it, what are those? And why is it a picture of The Forest? Looks like an avatar/agent map; IE: that the Ginko Terminals are sensoring data about the area in which they are placed, and reporting it back to some central location. _____________________

December 14, 2005 To whom it may concern, Recently it has been brought to our attention that the automated teller machines (ATMs) distributed by Ginko Technologies to offer, promote, and further their Ginko Financial services are more than merely teller machines. Ginko Technologies chose not to advise anyone on Forest staff of the hidden abilities of their automated teller machine that was until recently installed at the front door of the Forest store (and in many other Sims). These are namely: - an active scanner obtains the key (unique SL database I.D. number) of anyone who passes within 96 metres of the Ginko ATM (whether or not they have used the services of or have ever been a client of Ginko or its subsidiaries); - the ATM logs both the keys and the location of the individual(s) and transmits this information to a Ginko server; - the ATM continues to track the movements of everyone within 96m, continually supplying the Ginko server with updates; - the Ginko server then parses this information, generates maps based upon it, then logs the data for future use (please view the enclosed textures for further information); … „ ƒ ‚ † € - these clandestine processes constitute not only unwarranted invasion of unsuspecting individuals' privacy, they also cause lag. Due to the intrusive and lag-causing nature of the spyware concealed within the Ginko ATM and due in no small part to our not having ever been advised of the existence of same by Ginko, the Forest Executive has found Ginko Technologies and its subsidiary, Ginko Financial, to have committed a serious breach of trust in misrepresenting their ATM, failure to disclose the nature and purpose of the hidden scripts, and collecting personal information (ie. 'tracking the identity and whereabouts') of visitors to and residents of the Forest without their knowledge or consent. We have therefore taken the following actions: - Ginko Technologies' Ginko Financial ATM has been removed from the Forest Store. - in pursuance of the above and in accordance with the following Forest Rule: "[Rule 03]: Advertising or offering any product or service in the Forest is subject to staff approval and allowed only in designated areas." Approval for the vending, marketing, promotion, or development of any Ginko Technologies product or service is hereby revoked indefinitely. The Forest Admin take their responsibility to safeguard the privacy of the Sim's residents and visitors very seriously. We will continue to do so to the best of our ability and apologize to our residents and visitors for any inconvenience the aforementioned actions may have caused. This notice has been made freely available as a public service announcement to our community. Respectfully yours, Lady Mariko Saito Forest Executive _____________________

an active scanner obtains the key (unique SL database I.D. number) of anyone who passes within 96 metres of the Ginko ATM (whether or not they have used the services of or have ever been a client of Ginko or its subsidiaries); Of course it does. Sensors can't tell whether someone has used Ginko or not... _____________________

They also broke rule 5. Four legs good - two legs bag - and slept on beds with sheets.

Anonymous tracking of avatars to show how popular a spot is is a good business tactic.

I'd agree anonymous tracking is a good business tactic, but then again collecting avatar keys and tracking them across various locations is not exactly anonymous, and why generate maps and not a simple visitor type counter. _____________________

Tracking them across various locations? How does that picture prove that Ginko's doing this? Where was that picture obtained? Who provided it? Questions that need to be answered before the accusations start flying. _____________________

The scanner in the atms was more of Hino having fun rather then some evil scheme for us to see if people are having sex next to atms. It also shows where the popular spots in the sim are. And the scanner doesn't lag, for it only fires off once every 10 min. I believe Hino or someone is going to post some of our high res shots, as well as more details.

Bash Ginko, it's the "in thing" to do! I've been tempted to sell Anti-Ginko merchandise. Feel free to beat me to it, I know I'd buy some.
Sillyness aside, my actual post: The ATMs do contain a script that scans for agents about every 10 minutes (500 seconds, some older versions scanned every 2 minutes), stores this data into it's active memory, and then sends it back to our main server once or twice a day, or whenever the script's memory fills up, whichever comes first. The data is only sent once per avatar per ATM (until the script's RAM fills up), and the database only stores this data once per person (per ATM). We use this data to store which person has what key, so that we can send them inventory for "Give as Gift" purchases once our shopping site is complete, and to draw those neat looking traffic maps that Anshe so kindly copied from the admin section of our website. Those maps popped up entirely out of my own boredom. I figured out how to draw images one day, and decided I'd make a cool map thing out of some of the data we already had. We had been harvesting agent<>key data with just distance from ATMs for a while, but I decided that wasn't cool enough and added in location too. Previously, the maps were just rings of "most popular distance from the ATM". We use this data to tell if ATMs are worth having, where we need to focus on putting new ones, etc. Having explained that, it's pretty clear that anyone who questioned why we do this won't care what I say, or believe what I say for that matter, and then they'll just pick apart some other part of it ("Why do you need to send people inventory? SPAMMER! SPAMMER!" ![]() If you feel you need to return the ATM on your land, or tell other people to do so, or start a petition and get everyone in SecondLife to sign it thrice to put us out of business, feel free, I won't change my script. And as of yesterday, it's disclosed in our notecard (it was in there for about a week, but I forgot to actually put it into the backup notecard server, and our system switched over to the redundancies when our sim crashed). I appologize for not making it so sooner, but as I said, it was a side project of mine, and I honestly didn't care what happened to it at the moment (and probably got sidetracked, I do that alot). Provided is a copy of the script the ATMs use to gather this data, minus the contact info for our backend (for obvious reasons). The script will compile and run, and is released under public domain, so feel free to use it as you will. I will NOT support it, please don't ask me any questions if you can't get it to run. If you don't know what it does, read an LSL manual, or ask a friend. Also provided are some nicer copies of the traffic maps. I'm probably never going to read the replies to this thread. Constructive questions and comments can be sent to me in-world, complaints and paranoid foolishness can be directed to someone that might care (or back at this thread, that seems to be the popular choice). -Hinoserm |
