After reading it, I think it might, but not until after a lot of people have said why it won't.

Just watch. This thread will last at least ten pages, populated mostly by people screaming about what amounts to around one dollar a month.

Some of us rely on that "little amount of money" to keep going.

For many of who don't play SL to make a real income, the stipend is critical to our continued existance, especially those of us who make content for others to enjoy.

WTF is a lindex Circut breaker?

from Philip's blog:

From: Philip Linden
In addition, effective immediately, we are establishing "circuit breaker" trading halts based on movement (positive or negative) of the average exchange rate in any given day, as follows:

>10 percent in any 12-hour period: projected 1 hour halt

>20 percent in any 12-hour period: projected 2 hour halt

>30 percent in any 12-hour period: projected close until noon the following day

and apparently, it's only a loss of L$100 per week, not wonderful news for new accounts, but not too horrible either.

So long as we exclude those who make bets from also posting said comment, I bet 10L on page 4.

Lewis

In general, if someone makes content for others to enjoy, for free, and if that content is good, I'm certain all that person would need to do is rez a donation box to make up the L$400 difference per month.

Hell, I set up my tip jar in the middle of nowhere, for no reason, and get tips. If you provide a good or service, I'm sure people would be willing to donate.

See, everyone has a price.

Be it you are "doing it for the fun and greater good of humanity" or "I'm a hardcore business-man Yo!"

At the end of the day, any changes LL makes that affects their bottom-line people get upset.

My personal feeling toward this move is: indifference.

Surely glad that I get to keep my 500L per week, but not counting on it to last forever.

All joking aside, I see this as a very promising first step that will be painful for some.

I consider myself in the anti-stipend crowd, but I also believe that the harm done by stipends to the economy in the short term is outweighed by the benfits they bring. Ultimately however, stipends do undercut the economy making it harder for content creators to pay tier. From there, there are two possible outcomes, either content owners will have smaller sparten bits of land making the unregulated building of SL uglier in general, or an overall increase in prices.

I predict that eventually, the stipend will be phased out entirely or at least limited to players who have other abilities limited, such as the inablity to mark objects for sale.

However, I believe that an alternate source of income to those who don't wish to work in SL should be possible too, for a fee of course.

I wonder if this will increase the ammount of people (trying) to sell there accounts at all in the far-reaching futute. All in all, I feel this is the right move for Linden Labs.

Just get rid of all stipend. Since that's the direction they're going anyhow.

DO IT NOW

What they should do is make two versions of Premium, low or no stipend plus no-tier 512, and for those uninterested in land, higher stipends.

That or just tell everyone to buy off the Lindex if they need the lindens and be done with it.

This makes sense when you consider...

If you are only going premium for the larger stipend of L$500, and weigh the US$72 out over the course of the year, that puts the value of the L$ at 361 to US$1.

Now that they've reduced the amount to L$400, that puts the value at L$289 to US$1, which is much closer.

Regards,

-Flip

Einsman, if you must use big letters, please use the correct words.
MESSING ABOUT WITH STIPENDS IS A BAD MOVE

Thankyou for your co-operation.
