Barricade the doors the Luddites are coming!
Seriously, most games, including SL, come with settings that can be tweaked beyond what an older PC can handle. Why would you have people running high end machines not enjoy the performance that the extra power can give them? I remember trying to get Quake to run at 800x600... memories!

What does it matter since you have options to turn things off? I have a 2 year old G4 powerbook, and the best thing I did for my performance was switch from standard broadband to a much faster connection. All of a sudden low RAM and an ageing card isn't an issue.
The reality is, one day my machine won't cut it. That's just the way of computers. I'm hoarding Lindens now in the hopes that by that time I'll have enough for a new system. It'd be ludicrous for development to root itself in a frozen moment of technological time.

From: Magnum Serpentine I have been to the Preview a few times and tried out all the features. One of the testers I met there did indeed tell me it would take a powerful machine to run the full features of 1.9.1 (That is everything turned on not just some features) I'm a tester. I tell you that, sans hardare lighting, there will be almost no difference in performance. In fact, you might even notice an improvement. Oh noes!!! We have a paradox!!! Even if your worst nightmares are right and it takes a Cray XMP supercomputer to run SL after 1.9.1 - you can just turn the features off. OMGWTFBBQ! THERES NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT!!!!111!!ELEVENTYONE! IT'S ALL OPTIONAL! OH NOES! MY LIFE IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THINGS TO GRIPE ABOUT!!!!!

I won't be happy until SL can run on my Apple II. (The unexpanded one, at that!)
WITH flexiprims. And Havoc 9.

1.9.1 seems to be faster if you have a video card that can take over the heavy lifting from the CPU, and slower if you don't. My nVidia 5600 seems to be just below the bar... a few things are faster but in general I'm losing maybe 20% of my FPS.

The sims on the preview grid are where the old, crappy servers go to die. So if you're feeling some lag there, that's probably part of what's causing it.

From: Reitsuki Kojima With which features on/off? With all features off. Turning on lights and flexible prims didn't cost much after that, but the basic core rendering seemed just a bit slower.

From: Reitsuki Kojima Did you try it with occlusion? Occlusion seemed to actually reduce my FPS very slightly, but the effect if there was one was very small.

From: Argent Stonecutter Occlusion seemed to actually reduce my FPS very slightly, but the effect if there was one was very small. I was wondering, because Occlusion seems broken at the moment. It doesn't give anywhere near the performance boost it should - in most cases, it hurts performance, if anything.

From: Reitsuki Kojima ... a 3hz p4 and a fairly dated 256 meg AGP card. ... damn, man... I don't know what's more impressive: that you got a 3 hertz computer to work with a 256 meg AGP card, or that you got a 3 hertz computer to run SL, or that Intel makes a 3 hertz p4!

Well, on my POS (Piece of Sh%#@) computer, I didn't notice much slow down on the preview grid and I logged into it after working in Adobe Photoshop. It did sputter a bit when I decided in a fit of boredom to read the forums using Firefox.

I am experiencing about the same fps as 1.9.0, however my machine completely locks for a few seconds per step (although my fps still claims 8...) when I am viewing a particularly high prim area (such as my home sim). No vertex shaders, no lights.. Running an Athlon 2700 with a POS nVidia 5200...

I think alot depends on the machine,m my friend has a machine which on the surface looks slower than mine, and it works fine in the preview grid, whereas i crash to desktop every ten minutes, lol, however i am fortunate enough to be able to bite the bullet, save up and eventually i will be able to afford a better vidoe card (which i think is the culprit), for those that can't afford to upgrade ever, then there is an off switch for the features. It is silly to bitch that other people can afford to see better effects than you, and therefor the effects should not exist, there would be no progress, i can't wait for flexiprims, and the lighting, as i only see so many possibilities
