I found this a few minutes ago on the machinima.com site. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The plot is about mad Professor Linden infecting "There" with a virus. Its very hard to watch and way too long. However, if you have the patience and would like a chuckle check it out. I now have to make a sequel. Of course at the end of that film "There" goes down in a ball of flames. http://www.theremedianetwork.com/MSD/

Waaaaaaay too long, really not terribly good but the Benny Hill chase scene was 'kinda' cute. O.o Best line, "..but I don't want to die, Second Life doesn't have voice chat, it's too complicated and I like There's graphics better!"

Interesting idea, but I could only take about 5 minutes.

I watched the whole thing.
But then, I have the patience of Job and am easily amused.
These poeple put A LOT of work into this and I bet they had a blast doing it. It was way too long and should have been tightened up A LOT. Lots of awkward pauses. Some genuine chuckles for me here. Especially when they contrasted There with Second Life. When they find the There vehicles in Professor Linden's Lab... priceless. Of course, what else would he have There?
I've never been There, and it was interesting getting a feel for some of There's personalities and who is known for what. I'm aware of the some of the technical differences between the two worlds, like why There's vehicles operate so smoothly and the exteremely long distance views that are possible. Some of the camera shots were very cool. Very fluid. I liked the chase scenes.
The difference in audio sound quality among the actors was jarring, but I can understand why it was so. Some seemed more natural than others in their roles. They were pretty creative with (what I assume is) a limited number of gestures. Do they have to work with a standard library of animations or can they customize those?
There's world does seem simpler... less complex. I like the more realistic looks possible here and the option to look cartoony if desired. Perhaps There is a tradeoff of complexity for performance? That's the impression I get.
One of the characters mentions that Second Life is too complex. She has a good point. I've noticed some threads here recently encouraging Professor Linden to make Second Life more accessible to those less technically-minded. If Second Life is going to really catch on with the average consumer it will definately need to provide ways for that to happpen.
The Professor needs to build in simpler interface options himself or provide ways for SL Developers to do it on their own.

No, no, God no. I'm sick of my entertainment being dumbed down. I like SL precisely because its complexity provides me so much opportunity to be creative. If I wanted something simpler I'd sign up for the Sims Online or There. These things are difficult for a reason; we've been given the tools to carry out & give us a high degree of control over, very complex tasks in SL . I'm not saying there's no room for interface improvements, but the apparent difficulty of these tasks to newbies is what makes them so rewarding in the long run. If you want something less technically challenging go find the appropriate medium but don't take it away from those of us who don't.

There is pretty crappy, but it seems that Forterra Systems are continuing to develop the platform, On-Line Interactive Virtual Environment, which There is based upon. Their webpage is not very informative, but they have a diagram that indicates they're developing some more advanced features. Among the things mentioned on the diagram are scripting engine, object editor, GUI API and AI engine.

Why do people insist on encoding videos in WMV format ? That stops so many of us from even watching the video [Edit]Oh, and, whenever marketing speach/text/presentation mentions the word "agile" I cringe.

I started in There when it was in beta. Never did much in there other than chat and race buggies. When I found SL there was no going back. Sure they both have their strong points, but I'd rather have the immense configurability of the SL world any day. So far I watched that movie to about 10 mins when the stuttering tape recorder drove me nuts. I'll probably watch the rest eventually. It's good that There supports voice and all, but wouldn't it make more sense to dub the voices on afterwards? Anyway... nice effort, but it woulda looked better if they'd made it in Second Life

You can have something that's powerful yet simple. Look at Firefox for example.

I can't make a rocketbike in There. No, a hoverbike isn't the same thing. Yes, I know I haven't made/revised my rocketbike in months, that's not the point.

11 minutes in, of 1 hour, 30 minutes! gah... must ... fast forward ... but can't!
I can see why There people are so loyal. They all look the same. /snicker
EDIT: Thank god, I thought to manually load it into a DVD player that can skip to sections.

From: Hiro Pendragon I can't wait til they market it and Linden Lab sues for royalties. If it were made in SL, then the producers would own it as per the TOS entry on IP rights. As it was made in There, who owns the work? The producers or the company?

I watched the entire thing today and actually thought it was brilliant. I am not an ex-There player but have tried the 3-day trial twice and just did not enjoy it at all...but this was very well done. Having been involved in the SL Movie Trailer contest last summer I know the work involved in making an in-world movie, at least for SL. I was amazed at how seamless this one from There turned out. I know a lot of you posted that you couldn't get past the first 10 minutes or so....it gets better, IMO. Certainly didn't make me want to leave SL to go to There, but it was funny and enlightening as to the differences between these two virtual worlds. Bravo!

It was pretty freakin' funny at times. Some of the jokes were so utterly original that I couldn't help thinking that they must have been plagiarized from somewhere. It was also kind of self-effacing.

I think if they could have condensed it down to 5 or 10 minutes, this would be a great piece of macimanimanina chima.

From: Argent Stonecutter Oh god, I hope they never bring voice chat to SL. Me too. Anyway, there's always Skype if people want to chat as well (or the X million other voice chat programs).
