This was a project I was trying to get going earlier, but it just didn't take off. But now, with the offer for Linden funding, I would like to resserect this idea and get a team together to do it again.

The idea is this: we make an island full of puzzles in the Myst/D'ni fashion, that players can play through.

Anyone want to join to help out? We need plenty of builders and scripters!

That sounds interesting. I have always loved puzzle games and I used to play King's Quest back in the day. I have some projects that I need to work with, but I would like to be a part of this project too. I am not a scripter, but I'm a pretty good builder and I like messing with textures. Contact me ingame and we'll talk. :D

I love the Myst Trilogy and would be honored to join in this build along side my current project!

That sounds interesting Darwin! I was very interested in URU untill I found out it wasn't online only, and that they were doing a pay to play beta...

That sounds like a very interesting idea, Darwin. I suggest that you make a request of Cyan, Inc. (producers of Myst) to keep both Cyan and the Lindens happy.

I did a very quick check to see if Myst was in the hands of one of the big game companies and was surprised to find this application for permission for use of Myst materials. It seems that they are actively interested in promoting the use of game materials which may make your work easier.

Hey,

Why don't you guys see if you can do this in Darkwood? There's a lot of room there, and I believe Myst themed stuff fits the theme. I believe there might even be a whole island free.

I already started.

It's great to see that others have the same idea. I had already started such a project a month or so ago. Unfortunately due to severe first life time constraints I've not made a lot of progress, but you can see snapshots of the work at various stages here

I already have in mind at least one simple puzzle. I was also thinking of making linking books that would be useful for "teleporting" to landmarks.

Note, that most of the sounds for the Myst games are WAV files, so we should be able to use them. (Though we'll probably have to work that out with Cyan. I can't imagine that a fan based endeavor would be a problem.)

Actually the beta is not pay to play.

The first release of Uru is indeed solo; but some time after that you'll be able to explore Ages online with others. There is even a limited ability to modify your own Age.

I was up for it back then Dar, and I'm still up for it now! :D

I'll dig out the puzzles and buildings I sketched out before and scan 'em for the group.

I'll mainly be up for building/textures, but I can also make the odd bug-ridden script for it too lol.

You know what would be cool? Getting a Prelude island to make a full scale clone of the original Myst =)
I'll settle for 1/4th of DarkWood though.

Eggy wouldn't be that good idea to pick the DW sim. DarkLife is going to suck up most of the framerate (tried to keep it as low as possible). If you do another big project in the sim it might not keep up with all the scripts. That would be a shame for both projects.
Basically I would suggest lindens only one big project per sim (if it uses a lot of server power)

Anyway sounds like a cool project, I like puzzles. What kind of puzzles are Myst puzzles anyway?

Oh dont worry about that, havent you played the myst games?
Myst doesnt need any resources, because it isnt a real time system. Its an event based system so the scripts lay dormant all the time until an event is triggered, and when they do, they usually perform very short actions.
You wont need much memory even since you can easily just trap one event per script.

They're in Closed Beta right now, so I can't get into URU, but according to URU promotional materials, they're going into a pay to play beta soon.

Candidate areas for Myst property
11-08-2003 16:04
There are about three to four new sims in the southernmost portion of the map that are mostly empty. I did a quick fly-through of the area and noted several good candidate spots for Myst-themed constructs.

G'nor Linden has a land-lock on all the property right now. What is built there is vehicle racing themed, so that might already be the theme for at least one of the new sims. However, we might be able to make a plea for one of the sims for our use.

My current Myst work-in-progress is located near <39,257,3> in Taber. Not much to see, but I'll hopefully be adding more to it this weekend. (And, yes, I have a puzzle in mind.)

Myst Sounds
11-16-2003 22:56
I've uploaded some sounds that can be used for the Myst project. I've created an object with these sounds and deeded it to the group; it's located inside my current D'Ni project-in-progress in Taber.

(Unfortunately I'm on my linux box, so I can't access my profile information that contains the exact Taber coordinates. If you look at my profile, I've added the exact location. In any case, it's in the upper-left most portion of Taber.)

The object includes book opening and closing, and page turning sounds as well as the familiar "linking" sound.

Anyone up for creating a link book object that essentially invokes llTeleport()?

What happened to Darwin Appleby?
12-04-2003 09:50
I got e-mail notification that Darwin has been ousted as the Myst leader. What happened? Who's running the group now?

For that matter, has anyone looked at the sounds I provided in my D'Ni building? Anyone else going forward with related projects? What?

You get those messages when someone leaves the group or possibly the game.

It's a great idea still. You guys need to form a small, tight team and get some working myst stuff going. 3 or 4 good puzzles anda nice looking corner of the world would do the trick. Then, when it's all going get players to come in and test and tell the Lindens. If it's clear that it's a great little piece of fun then I'm sure you will find they will help out in any way possible.

First ya got to prove yourself :)

Good luck, great idea, and good luck on puzzles! (i'd love to see some team ones!)
