Hippos are beautiful magnificant awe inspiring animals, and it insults me that you think they are some kind of lame overdone joke.

JV - what you meant and what it is are too different things :)
I'm gonna side with Huns on this one. Solidarity!

So now, using the prognotiscator of prognosticators, I will delve for the true mascot of SLU using Google Image search.

And the result is:

LOL

That's perfect Madox! Just picture it: Walking up to the campus, and flanking the entry gates are two banana slugs, rendered in fine Colorado Yule marble, standing proud in their own slime trails.

Just found out about this last night. Count me in, too.

I would be interested in participating in landscaping the campus, and I could teach both SL and non-SL things. I know that Ralpha has already put in a bid for teaching landscaping, but maybe there'd be room for two of us, just as multiple people teach scripting. I can also do a little with texturing and possibly other subjects. When we get to RL things, I can do second language aquisition and psychology.

Consider a DarkWood branch for the magical arts. :)

This is an exciting project!

The symbol should definetly be the three primitive crest, but the mascot should be a hippo making a cow it's beotch.

Something to consider if there's too many teachers wanting to teach the same thing... if a class is large, maybe it would be possible to have a co-instructor or assistant to help out in (be creative) various ways.

I didn't mention anyone by name, so I don't know why you would take offense. Were the SL hippos your idea? I don't even know. Anyway, I have a right to my opinion, and I'm going to level with you here. To me, they ARE cashed out, and making them our mascot would be like trying to ride the "WASSAAAAP!" or "All your base are belong to us" bandwagon.

I really think we should have a delightfully wierd mascot, such as a capybara or a banana slug or a basilisk. You can't tell me basilisks aren't cool. Or a nudibranch. Or perhaps a monotreme.

I am particularly fond of the rampant banana slugs Madox Kobayashi found.

Man, that thing looks like it should be having a beer. :D

What about a raccoon? Raccoons are pretty intelligent, not a bad qualification for a university mascot.

(p.s. I still like the banana slugs)

....Because everybody loves pandas!

On a more serious note--I have a class request actually. I missed that "Physics" class awhile back and I think that'd make a great topic to teach regularly at SLU. Not to mention Vector Math and Quaternions for lazy people that don't want to relearn on their own....But I don't know anyone like that. :D

Ok I have an offer to make.

I'm mired pretty deep in llApplyImpulse() and llSetForce() so it might be a good idea for me to teach a Motion Class. This would cover how to move objects with more control, without relying on SetPos() or MoveToTarget(), and what is going on when you check that physics box.

With regards to SLU - I'm most interested in having a science dept. which is different than scripting. I imagine scripting dept covers syntax and usage of LSL. Science dept assumes you know LSL and covers using LSL to implement different behaviours. Is this what people have been calling R&D?

Also, I guess magazines in SL have so far all flopped, but I was semi-serious about having a 'Physical Review Journal' type zine that the science dept could put out, where faculty presents things they are working on.

Foreign languages at SLU
09-26-2003 07:51
I'm prepared to look into opening a foreign language department. We would recruit people who are native speakers of various languages and offer lessons either at scheduled times or at mutual convenience (for now, primarily conversation).
However, I can work with a teacher and beginners to do lessons in conversational style but which also provide either explicit or modeling of learning and teaching strategies. Some of our international players would be ideal as teachers, and they need not be trained teachers if I can work with them. Any interest?
If some of you who are native speakers or else nearly native are interested in teaching your language as outlined above, please let me know either through this thread or in SL by IM or notecard.

please no hippos for the mascot..really animals dont have anything but a tenuous connection to SL.

why not make the mascot the Prim? what could be more representative of the foundations of SL and what makes our world what it is than the versatility and strength of the lowly Prim. GO PRIMS!! SUPPORT THE SLU FIGHTING PRIMS!

i cant make the sunday meeting either..sorry :(

I would be interested in teaching Creative Writing classes via SLU. Qulifications: BA in Creative Writing, Poetry, M.A. in English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing, Fiction. Currently in my third year of the "terminal" (i.e. considered equivalent to a PhD) degree for writers, the M.F.A. in Fiction, with a secondary emphasis in Creative Nonfiction. I have all the genres covered :). I've been teaching writing on the college level for five years as well, including Composition on all levels (from remedial to advanced) and Creative Writing. heck, I can send you a CV ;).

I've also published several poems during my lifetime and I'm currently working on my first collection of short stories. I think that a creative writing class can work in SL quite easily, I would just need students who were willing to do a little reading *before* classes started and who wanted to show up regularly. I don't think I could help out much with a single "class" here and there -- but say, a six or seven week "course" would work perfectly.

Please let me know if you guys are interested.

I'd be interested if this is a class on writing. I have been working on some short story writing in my spare time. My schedule is wierd though, so I'll have to see what time you set.

Oooh. I'd love to participate in the Creative Writing classes if enough others are interested. What if we had a writer's workshop or a round-robin story?

(one person writes 1 part, next person writes next, etc, and we see just how wild we can get it while staying coherent -- different round robins have different goals, or we can just screw around)

Wow! Interest in SLU is growing bigger and bigger! It looks like we may actually need to start up Schools of Science and Humanities. Currently everything got lumped into the School of Scripting and the School of Design - and design is also responsible for coming up with campus features. So we'll need some new Deans if the range of subjects expands. If you've got the motivation and organizational chops, come to the meeting on Sunday and throw your hat into the ring. By then there should be a lot of good ideas for scripting classes and for classroom spaces.

I'd love a creative writing class, but perhaps a seperate class for writing and poetry?

I'd love to teach an RL Interface Design class here too, as long as we're on the subject. I think SLU can make a good FL educational recource too, actually.

Yeah, unless anyone wants me to mix them specifically -- I'll separate the genres :).

Well I officially apply for RL Interface Design instructor. I do this IRL so I think it should be fun.

If the class is in demand (which I expect it will be) then I can teach a second creative writing class.

I can also instruct SL Economics; I think that may be a helpful class.

I, too, would be pleased to teach a writing class. I've taught university classes in writing for a lot of years and I have published a bit (mostly nonfiction).

What I'd be REALLY interested in doing is longer project assistance. That's my favorite kind of writing. And my favorite way to work with the writing of others, too. World-development, working out of histories, the Tolkien methods, basically.

My strength is more this kind of long stuff, and nonfiction projects; I would be interested in taking a short fiction or poetry class, though. It sounds like Zana-san's background and mine are somewhat similar, but distinct enough that we might be able to offer some interesting alternatives.

I'd also love to do topics in art history, maybe philosophy, but in those zones I'm more an enthusiast than an expert.
