Following up on the recent SL Physics Workshops, Kanker and I have been discussing expanding on the concept. We handed out a survey after the seminars and this is what we heard back: -more SL applications! -more hands-on! -more demos and script examples! -very interested in the subject matter. -more in-depth coverage of some of the topics. In addition, we found out people would love the opportunity to take classes in specific uses of scripts, such as elevators, sensors, and moving vehicles. So, Kanker and I are proposing the creation of SL University! The goals of this organization would be: -to promote knowledge about aspects of SL and scripting a step above the beginner's classes. -to provide a central clearinghouse for said knowledge. Perhaps this could be tied in with Neil Protagonist's Stanford Library! -to promote the sharing and discussing of knowledge and artistic achievement in general. The University could be the generator for continuing the wonderful efforts in art and liturature we've seen so far. -to create the framework and structures for what could become a true virtual campus, where students and professors could arrange to meet "in person". That's the ambitious end of the spectrum, but for now, we're looking for like-minded individuals, who would be willing to share their expertise with the SL community! Teachers and demos are wanted! If you are knowledgable in physics, engineering (of various kinds), or programming, or scripting, we are especially interested in talking to you. Eventually the university may include all of the knick-knacks and props, such as convertible classrooms, college sweatshirts, frat parties , and tree-edged quads, so that all may relive the wonders and horrors of that time in our lives. All who are interested in this project, get in touch with Kanker Greenacre, or myself. In addition to teachers we'll be looking for all sorts of creative and intelligent people (that's you) to help out with setting up different pieces of the puzzle, or just to give advice on the whole thing. Thanks, Ananda Sandgrain Admiral of Kazenojin

SLU - What a great idea!
09-17-2003 14:46
Ambitous but amazing! I'm not profrssor level but would really like to help in any way possible. I'll sweep the floors if needed, to get my foot in the doors. It sounds exactly like the instruction I've been looking for. I hope to see a lot of Our talents get involved with this worthy project! From: someone "We've got to get these people to a hospital!" This actually sounds like a good engine to use to combine a bunch of similar groups together... for example have a "science" department divided into physics, astronomy, programming(scripting) etc...
I think I'd be willing to help out, I'm a newer player but I'm learning quick.

You can definitely count me in Ananda. I kinda figured a couple of those suggestions would be made. Probly from my boring class lol! I didn't really have time to prepare much else but my outline. next time I'd like to do something related to physics/vehicles again, and yes, more hands on. you know how it is with RL school right now though, but i'll be in touch soon.

OOH! I would love to be a part of it! Im a vet from late beta, and I know my way around LSL (the scripting language).

Very psyched about this idea too. I'd love to help out, echo Good Zygo Hunting that while I'm not professor material, would be glad to help with administrative/organizational stuff, to the extent such is needed.
Of course, I could be a student too. Maybe I'll found a frat. Pledge Sigma Lambda! Go Hippos!

It's great to see so much interest in this idea! I guess I'd better go get Kanker, and we'll figure out a time for a kickoff meeting.

Sounds pretty cool. I'd love to help out however I can in non-scripting ways, like Jay and Zygo.

Again - repeating everyone - but AMAZING idea. I work at a university in real life. The learning environment surrounds you! This would be the perfect outlet for the classes already conducted i would think. I think it would also bring some structure and stability and continuity to the classes (ie - steps of learning)
I am just getting a handle on LSL so I'd love to attend for scriptping, but I am told i am a great modeller and designer, so I'd love to teach the 'fine arts' side of the house - modelling and texturing.
I'll find you ingame and would love to attend the initial meeting. If I can help in any administrative way - also interested.
Congrats on an excellent concept - may it grow to swift fruition!

This is great idea. I totally missed checking out the physics classes. I really jive with several of your points about knowledge sharing. I'm a long time programmer and try to stay pretty well-read on the sciences and physics. In SL I spend all my time building/scripting things, trying to rise above the commonplace and see what is really possible (I call it theoretical scripting, since more often than not, my research results in things impossible, rather than resulting in a working object ) Anyhow, I dont know what I could do to help. Weekends I'm free to try teaching stuff. I'm not too big on teaching how to properly use the LSL functions, but I could do segments where I demo stuff I've been researching. Dunno if that's interesting Would there be a salary for professors? Or maybe a grant from SLU?

Wow! We've got quite a list of supporters and don't even have the first meeting figured out yet! From the looks of things, here's the roll call so far, with areas of interest: Zygo Slate - Design and Facilities Depts. Darwin Appleby - Instructor? R&D? Admin? Garoad Kuroda - Design and Facilities Depts. Ope Rand - Scripting Dept. - Instructor Christopher Omega - Scripting Dept. Jay Powers - Astronomy and Greek Depts. Nergal Fallingbridge - Design and Facilities Depts. Damiana Domino - Design and Facilities Depts. Madox Kobayashi - Scripting Dept. - Instructor Feniks Stone - Instructor? Kanker Greenacre - Dean and Founder - Physics Dept. Ananda Sandgrain - Public Relations and Gray Liaison Xylor Baysklef - Scripting Dept. - R&D? Hiro Yamamoto - Scripting Dept. - R&D? Kanker's going to be a busy guy! He'll need some of you to step up and take leadership roles to get this going, and also to get out and recruit more instructors. Start bugging him to set a meeting time too . You see, the other promoter has got her hands full already with one successful group.

Let me know what is involved in a 'leadership role' and I'll see what I can do. I also might be free to make any admin-type objects/scripts if any are needed

could it be in Kissling? it looks like there's lots of empty space on the plateau..ok not as much as there used to be and it's probably all owned but.....
this seems like something that could use its own sim. not a completely group owned sim but something like Boardman or Deharo where it's mostly Linden owned except for the theme buildings. actually couldn't the whole thing be Linden owned since it's such a community service? just thinking out loud....

How about we buy out a sim (with hard work of course) and make a valley, like Olive?
