Blender: problem

Can anyone help, please?

I'm running Blender 2.48a and all of a sudden I can't seem to display the image I want to texture from. If I'm in object mode in the 3D view I can load the image - a 558 kb tga file - in the UV/Editor window and it shows up fine, but as soon as I change to edit mode to select the faces I want to unwrap, the picture disappears and I'm left with the unwrapped vertices on a standard rectangular grid grey background.

The image would appear to still be there as when I select and move the vertices around in the UV Edit window, I can see the effect in another window which is set to 3D View texture mode.

I'm running on Windows XP Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+ 2.61Ghz with 4gb RAM and an ATI Radeon Sapphire X1650 graphics card with 512 mb onboard memory, which I would have thought sufficient to run Blender comfortably.

Suggestions? Clean ones, please, I've already expended all the sweary words!!!
:)

Persevered and got up a texture view of what I wanted by working blind. Went through the rest of the bake texture only process with a new 1024x1024 image but ended up with just a completely black image.
:(

Nah, reinstalling Blender is just for when it's updated :)

Edit mode will show the image assigned to the UV Faces, so the image changing is normal. If it changes to the grey grid, then there's no image assigned. If you are using multires go to level 1. Select all vertices, move mouse over UV Image editor and select all there to.

Then you can assign the image by selecting it in the combo box in the UV Image Editor toolbar.

If you are using multiple UV Layers, remember you can choose the one you are editing and the render one separately with the icons next to them.

Yeah. It's not surprising that the forums have been a lot quieter recently. I get that 9 times out of 10 due to the nature of my posts. Words to look out for are things like:

from, update, edit, select,

I had to take the "f" word out of the last post to get it to work hence the edit message :)

Apparantly the "f" word before the others is ok, after them it isn't

Still getting Forbidden statement! What's with this? Is it length of post or specific words causing problems?

So why isn't your post self defeating? You just told me I can't use 'fr*m. upd*te, ed*t, sel*ct' but they went through in your text. lol
Also, I suspect the f word you refer to is not quite the same one I immediately think of in the context of censorship! Need to put my thinking cap on.

You can say from before select, edit, or update, but not the other way around.

There are also some characters that cause problems now, something with slashes or asterisk, I don't recall exactly at the moment.

Apologies for delayed reply - had to take to bed with heavy cold and feeling poorly, exacerbated by rejection of Forum post! :)

Thanks for explanation, Suzanne - voted on the Jira.

I think I understand what you're saying but I'm not sure the problem isn't quite what you put it down to. Another component in the same Blend file works without problem, so I don't truthfully think it's my workflow.
Bear with me while I describe the process..........
I select an object I want to texture in object mode, change to Edit mode, do the occlude background geometry, use face selection, and select the faces I want to texture. The UV Edit window has one blueish square, presumably because all the UV faces are stacked on top of each other.
I then key U to unwrap fr0m view, and in the UV /edit window I see what I want to texture. Now moving over to the UV edit window I select image>load to bring in the image I want to use as the texture basis, and select it. This is where the image doesn't come up and I'm stuck with the vertices against the grey grid. The combo box has the image in the list but even picking it there doesn't bring it up. Clicked the pin button umpteen times to see if that makes a difference (especially as I can never remember what shade of button means the option is active!!). The image info is certainly there and being applied to the unwrapped faces because as I said if I move the UV faces around I can see a textured version in another textured 3D view window.

Pinning disables UV unwrap on the selected points, they should turn red when you pin them. This is so you can adjust the edges, pin them and then do a normal UV unwrap to get a smoother unwrap across the rest.

Ah ok, in that case make sure you using UV Local View. Numpad / key toggles between local and global, you can check in the UV Image Editor view menu which is selected.
