seems so Eku - sorry for hijacking your poll (I did vote btw). The Linden staff are not too intelligent and they are so busy deleting my posts that I guess they got confused!

I think they sold far more OSs than they expected, and whilst initially they were delighted by the extra revenue, they quickly found that the rapid growth caused problems with their infrastructure, especially given that there was clearly a lot of use of OSs that was not along the lines intended. And if some people were told that residential use was ok, they probably shouldn't have been, we've seen Lindens going off message on policy time and time again.

Yes but it was Jack who said it was ok initially, the same Jack who then pathetically pointed to the guidelines. I'm probably more pissed about that than I am the price rise. If there's a problem there's a problem, being honest about it is a better strategy.

In my view the huge price rise had only one objective - to slow, and probably reverse, the rapid growth in the number of sims so that technically they could get on top of the problems. They couldn't simply pull the product, so they had to make it unattractive by raising the price. My guess is that all those abandoning sims in high dudgeon and saying "that'll show them" are doing exactly what LL wanted.

They should have stopped selling it but I agree with you about the aim, they needed them off the grid and chose the most damaging route short term for hopeful long term benefits. I think they've miscalculated myself but time will tell.

Stopping selling it wouldn't help if there were already too many. And how damaging is it? A lot of people have talking on here about trading in OSs for normal sims, and four OS's at the old price is the same as one normal sim in terms of income to LL. I'm sure that there will be a noticeable drop in revenue in the next few months, but not enough to hurt them, after all if all the OS owners simply handed them back they'd be back to where they were less than a year ago.

Stopping selling it would have highlighted there was an issue with the product. Continuing to sell a problematic product does not endear me (can only talk from my perspective) to a company. When I look into the concept of expansion I'll consider issues such as this, it reduces the amount of risk I take here, i'll only invest what I can afford to lose but now I'm going to lessen that risk factor by being prepared to invest less.

Bad will goes a long way. Big estate owners are being hurt by this, love them or loathe them, big estate owners risk a lot more than me with their investments, they produce the upfront money that generates growth. Now some of them are going to have itchy feet. Whether this washes over or not is way too early to tell but it has not been handled well by Linden Lab and if the world as a whole suffers, we all suffer. There are knock on effects for this for people who never gave openspaces a second glance.
