The openspace situation is certainly a bitter one. The divisiveness it has caused between long standing residents and Linden Lab is lamentable.
More lamentable to me however are that many of these long standing and supportive residents of Second Life is now homesteading on OPENLIFE and I fear they shall never return.
These individuals perhaps were the finest PR tool that Linden Lab had and they are leaving and investing elsewhere.
True OpenLife is still in a pioneer stage, but an influx of residents and revenue will certainly hasten its development.
Bottom line of this thread is...
ARE YOU SURE THIS IS ULTIMATELY A GOOD BUSINESS DECISION?

Openlife indeed

I too am sick and tired of the way LL is running this game. Identification awhile ago, supplying new land in very small quantities and never ever responding to complaints about lag and sim performance. And now raising the fee in stead of taking measures against those abusing the open spaces. How is that going to help make the open spaces perform better? Time for me to move. Just made my avatar in OpenLife - www.openlifegrid.com. Yes, you can actually choose your own last name there! I am out of here peepz. TT

Michaelais probably right... they will soon be back. There simply is not an good enough alternative yet. But I wonder what will happen as soon as initiatives like OpenLife are serious and stable enough... how many former Linden employees will be flipping burgers. Not the decision makers though, those are the people that always find a new place to screw up.

OpenLife is not associated with Linden Lab in any way. They can use the same viewer but that's where it ends. Other viewers, like Kirsten's version, was originally designed with SL in mind so you will see the similarities and buttons that might claim to lead back to SL but try them, they don't do anything. OpenLife is very basic compared to SL. But SL was once where OL and while people may not jump ship just yet (I believe a vast majority of you will go to OL, hang out for 10 minutes and come back here), I think people should start spending part of their time in virtual worlds exploring other non Linden Lab grids. Without your support, open source sims will never be able to compete with LL.....and we all know now that LL seriously needs some swift kick in the butt competition.

Openlife is not ready for the influx of all these people. They are still in beta. It's VERY much like SL was in 2003/2004.

This current mess with OS price increase is just of a long list of badly handled things by LL. I am not in any way belittling the devastating effects it has on the people involved merely stating the fact that this is not the first and will not be last disaster.
The usual pattern of response by SL residents goes as follows: 1. Shock, Anger, Protests, ranting, demands, threats of pulling out 2. placating words from LL 3. More insistent Shock, Anger, Protests, ranting, demands, threats of pulling out 4. Some sort of compromise by LL 5. Some people quietly wait it out to see what happens. Some Selloff and leave. Some eventually come back because nothing IS quite as good yet.
I have said for years that as soon as there is a viable competitor to SL this online world is in big trouble.
I need to revise that statement in the wake of the OS mess. Given that some of the alternate grids are making FAST progress and starting to reach levels that almost match SL when I first joined. Also given the level of anger with LL that people are taking with them to these alternate grids in the wake of the OS mess. And given the technical expertise of the people moving over there. That viable competitor is going to be there and SOON.
I dont think it will be the death knell for SL immediately. I still think LL could salvage the situation. But competition is pretty much a given in the very near future and worse competition with a big grudge.
I dont think LL can count on the old pattern of some leave and new people come to replace them. Bad decisions are ignored in time or simply not known. Because when the new come there will soon be no gaurantee that they ever set foot in SL.
For me and mine we are waiting quietly. We have far to much of ourselves invested in SL over the years to jump ship just yet. Part of me still really wants to believe this will sort out. SL is home to us (and I dont mean a sim or a business or a plot of land). We may spend time on other online worlds/games now but we always at the end of the day come home. We love what we create and do here too much to walk away.

Avatar hangout has got 327 users, 230 unique visitors over the last 30 days, and 27 people online at this very moment. So it is not so hard to have little lag. Hardly serious competition. OpenLife does have a larger user base, and is getting bigger with help of Linden Labs at this moment But no currency system yet, which holds many content creators back (the ones that want to earn some money). But they could well be serious competition sooner then we think.

LL twice taught me not to plan ahead.. first with the SIM price drop and now with the OS price hike.. I wont leave. but SL wont be the only place i wanna be. i think i gonna spread my eggs around in a few other baskets.. anyhow i like the wild wild west feel of Avatar Hangout.. ^^ a good place to start the expedition... theres other frontiers out there Scotty... so beam me up

OpenLife and the similar SL clones out there are still so raw that moving to them is like moving out of the city and into an open forest, with nothing but an axe in your hand and a loincloth to wear. "Sure, you can have a nice home here. Just chop down those trees and build it yourself!" "Clothes, Jewelry? Make 'em and wear 'em, if you can find the materials and know how..." "Food? See that rabbit over there? Catch him and eat him, lad! What do you mean, you don't know how? Learn!"
It's alpha-test, at best, and doesn't offer anything close to a full feature set yet.

I too am exploring the others now -- particularly openlife, which looks like it is achieving some kind of critical mass for growth.
It takes some work to get set up there with second inventory (which is still also in rather a beta stage) and it takes some patience to be there, since it is buggy.
BUT! one gets a sense that what they produce there is truly needed and appreciated. Lately, I have seen LL featuring its own content like Burning Life and bay city and nautilus -- and opening the showcase, which they control, rather than top spaces, which were controlled to at least some extent by resident traffic. They could have been spending time featuring what residents have come up with, instead. When I look at what other residents have done, I am truly stunned by it at times. I do not feel the same way when I go to sterile things put out by companies and LL.
So if I make horses and houses and furniture and hopping bunny avatars for people in openlife grid, there is a sense that I am making more than Lindens for it. I am actually making a DIFFERENCE by creating content there.
Soon there will be a currency there too, soon there will be a way to recoup setup and tier fees. I invested over $10000 in SL, which I lost. Now, if I invest $1000 in openlife grid, maybe I don't care so much if it is lost, as long as it makes some kind of difference.

It is a joke. Maybe in 3 or 4 yrs might be worth looking at. I have yet to find any world that comes close to SL. I find it hard to believe all the people who say they are leaving sl will do it. maybe for a week or two.

Expatriots from SL to OL....
10-30-2008 10:41
Recognize that Open Life may be currently at the development level Second Life was back in 2003/2004, but with the influx of experienced builders and scripters and animators from SL, I think OL will develop very quickly over the next year. SL four years ago did not have the talented residents that OL is getting today from this migration.

SL four years ago did not have the talented residents that OL is getting today from this migration. Openlife is immature, it will get there. It has the advantage that SL came first, and it will play catch up faster, as it doesn't have to break ground as fast. I have always tried to help people learn in SL. If I decide to make a jump into Openlife, which it looks like I will, I welcome anyone to look me up. If I buy land ( with 45,000 prim) Will make space available for people to build. Even though there are benifits, some of the gotchas are amazing.. Like logins. Crashes. I think they suffer from connection loss way too often. I couldn't link builds. This MAY be an issue. Anyway, If these things get worked out soon. It should be a great place to have fun. Edit: Nice thing is, anything built in either world CAN be ported.

You were not in SL at the time. Openlife is nothing like 2003/04 SL. It does not matters if they have sculpties, big chicken dinner, who cares. The place is nothing like 2003 and you people who were not even in SL for a day back then need to stop making the comparison.

I dont know why you need to slam everyong who wants to branch out.. ppl have the right to diversify .. to try other things.. and if something does overtake SL.. well then all the more good to them. Healthy competition in any area of life can only be good for consumers... or would you rather SL become the Microsoft of virtual worlds, holding us hostage to their constant upgrades and hardware bloating decisions? Linux for example might not be mainstream but that doesnt mean it doesnt work.............
