A few other things that I ask any mall owner who wants me to rent on their sim:

1. Where will the TPs be located for the sim?

2. Who is the "market manager" who handles compliance with the market rules, lag issues, griefer attacks, etc.?

3. What kind of promotion will you do for this space to ensure real foot traffic from people who are interested in shopping? Special events like live music? Skating or other winter events? How will you make residents aware of the space and advertise it? Classifieds? A nice big ad and some "product feature" blogs on the SL home page would be nice, and a featured spot on the front page of Search as well. I realize that would be somewhat undercutting those who've paid for space on the front page of Search, but as I imagine these parcels will "rent" for far more than the average market stall, I think it would be value for money spent.

Thanks for the thoughtful questions Rachel - some thoughts:

1. There are Infohub landing points in each of the 4 regions, along with a shared large ice skating rink in the middle. You can also of course create SLurls/landmarks to any location in the regions.

2. Linden Lab will be acting as the market manager and will ensure all guidelines (along with CS/TOS) are followed within the market.

3. We will be providing various types of marketing/promotion for the Holiday Marketplace, including the banner ad that is currently on the SecondLife.com web page, additional visibility in Showcase and will hopefully hold tie-in events in the shared space in the middle.

Puppet - To be honest, I'm not sure if we'll be doing similar things in the future, it will depend on how this goes and what the feedback is.
Jeska, I wouldn't use this project to judge the viability of the idea. As a shop-owner who does approximately 6 times more business during the holiday season, I would have been extremely interested in participating had this occurred a month or so earlier and a majority of the 60-day period been before December 25. Based on several posts above, there are other people with similar feelings.

You will not be able to subdivide, resell, or deed the land to group.

Good. Hopefully those who win the auctions will use the parcels in the spirit this was intended.

That's exactly the kind of feedback we're looking for - thanks Miles!

This really is a nice idea. I might have been interested if I had any money ... lol. So, it all goes to those who have the money to spend. That's OK. That's the way markets work. So, I'm not complaining.

BUT ... a really nice idea was suggested earlier. but, I think a lottery is a bit much ... imagine over 2 million people entering it. no thanks.

But, a lottery for the chance to buy it (knowing the fixed price before hand) ... now that's more interesting ... everyone who's willing to pay THIS price, put their number in the hat. Levels the playing field a little bit ... but, doesn't raise as much money, though, I would guess :)

Anyway ... just a thought for the future.

What about speculators? Those who will rent the land! How to make a higher bid against them?

Could you please lock an auto return of 5 minutes for objects which are not from the land owner?

Garmin has a good point. I've seen several land dealers hanging out on these parcels, and the bids are terribly high now - slim hopes for me getting one. Although it would be nice for someone getting one of these parcels to be able to share the parcel with friends and family, that would also allow speculators to rent the parcels out, even set up little malls on them. Is that your intent for these parcels, or are they supposed to be a 'perk' for individual premium account holders?

While at it, locking in restricting spatial sound to the parcel? Intrusive noise from other lands is on a par with object littering IMHO

I went and checked out the sims, I wasn't too impressed of them to even think of reupgrading to Premium to take advantage of them. What I don't understand is why didn't they do this like starting last month? Then people could have had their things ready etc instead of having to be rushed to set up? Is this another Money Stunt? , I am however curious on the gift package what could be in there? :P

If we win more than one do we get more than one gift? I put multiple bids down in an attempt to not have to watch the auctions that closely, and one already won. And I'm thinking if no one outbids me on another I may end up with two. I do have a use for them to sell various holiday items and promote our company but was wanting to know if we'd end up with two gifts?

SL "economy" is in the mess as direct result of your incompetent decissions and policies over last 2 years and you come up with an new land offer?

Every single day, as different networks of private scanners show, land equivalent of app 15 sims is abandoned by SL residents. Just imagine what is going to happen in coming months with hyperinflating US dollar collapsing in RL. I predict that soon nobody will be willing to buy a single sqm of virtual land - it will be essentially given away for free to reduce tier liability. At least 3/4 of Americans who represent app 60% of the SL community will be forced to focus on real life again.

I do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand, that in February at the latest you will have to start cutting off the mainland (servers paid not by the residents but paid by you) to reduce your fixed and operational costs and start moving people closer to the core of the continents.

I have doubts about your ability to listen to your customers but I will say that anyway: Your only chance to survive is to reduce the size of your company, cut tiers to half, stop regulate and interfere (you are not the state but the private enterprise which is obliged to follow the law and US constitution),

stop charging the VAT (relocate your business if necessary) and do everything possible to get new people to the system, especially non-american customers who will be able to pay you in currencies with at least some "intrinsic" value.

Time is running out.

Oh dear. I went and checked out what fine wintery builds were going up on the winning parcels in the marketplace. The parcels directly around the skating rink, which went for big $$$, include 2 malls in the building stage owned by the same owner and one parcel that appears to be used solely to advertise for an island estate. Is this the 'spirit' of the Holiday Marketplace?

I noticed that one of the parcels I was watching that was to close today and had bids last I checked didn't show in the closed auctions and is still owned by the Gov. - will this parcel be relisted?

I should be more positive about this - after all, I did only count two parcels being used as adfarms for estates so far across the regions, and many of the occupied parcels so far are hosting very nice looking businesses. I bet everyone is glad you have that new policy that restricts how advertising signs can look! It would be a shame if the adfarmers trashed the Holiday Marketplace.

Maybe I'm just jealous because as a small business-dog, I am finding the winning auction bids so far to be out of my reach.

Linden Labs. You can do all you want with win sell, bonas. etc. Not many Sl players or land owners will buy into it. If you want to save anything especially your integerty. you will NOT raise the new Homestead rates in July. If you at least keep them at $95 some people can survive, If you continue the way your going, you are only making people more angry. You have made a great game here, stop screwing it up. PLease!!!!

This actually might have been a good concept with some additional thought and effort. As suggested, for future please consider announcing and making the land available earlier. The holiday season for vendors (what there's been of it) is nearly over. I suggest an October announcement and a pre-Thanksgiving auction so that vendors have time to set up and catch all 3 holidays.

One other thing I'd like to bring up, as long as we're talking about markets and ecommerce in SL. A year ago I was making somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200US/mo in sales at this time of year. This year, I'm barely making the tier on my island. I'd actually be relieved if I could put it down to my products or something I've done wrong, but the fact is that sales have dropped over the cliff in the last few weeks. This even includes freebies -- 4 weeks ago I was handing out 50 or more of them a day, now I give away about 10 a day. The fact is, people are not shopping in SL this season.

I recognize this is almost certainly due to the economic slowdown, but I wanted to lay it down where LL could see it and others could add their experiences and concerns. It's not specifically a criticism but instead more of a "heads' up," because frankly it has DANGER written all over it for all of us, up to and including LL. Perhaps this is a separate discussion, but its one that would be worth a joint forum to put our heads together to talk over ideas for improving the situation. Decreasing sales for resident content creators means fewer residents altogether, and an unstable SL economy.

I hope SL reads your post, I am right there with you.

Oh, if I win it will be part performance art, some marketplace. (I lost by 5L at the last second yesterday :((( )

I go into all of this not expecting to make money because no one knows me and I have no clientelle except those who bought my stuff in Cybertown (with nonexchangeable funny money).

But making a fun place for people to check out or hang out? That I am good at with any crowd :) If I've made you smile or chuckle, then mission accomplished.

If people like what they see and come to my gallery or shop, then great and icing on the holiday cake. I can't go into any of this expecting to quit my RL job.

While I agree this should have been done months back and started on November 10th or something (gotta consider covering through Epiphany), I can go with the flow and come up with post-holiday events. In fact there will be other holidays during that time.

I'm a little confused. The trees on my parcel cannot be moved or removed? Where are we expected to put our builds?

the Holiday Marketplace will be a location for the Residents vs Lindens snowball fight, which is being promoted in a variety of ways -
