I have never understood why it was a pie menu anyway. Give me a good old vertical list anyday.
Maybe for conservation of space?

Whenever I have wanted to edit attachments, I have done a ctrl+3 to bring up the edit box then I just click on my hair or whatever. I don't know how I got into that habit, but that is why I didn't notice the change to the pie menu pages, however I do like being able to see friends and groups on the first page without having to find a prim free space on my Avi.

Pie menus combine the best possible Fitt's law location with muscle-memory. They're much quicker to selectfrom than just about anything... once you learn the gesture (and it's easy to learn) you automatically start click-drag-release-ing. The thing about this, though, is you don't make arbitrary changes in pie menus unless you're a total lunatic sadistic bastard. Hence this thread. It's also why I hate it when I meant to select an object and edit it, but missed and wind up in appearance mode. Usually, it's an invisible poseball, at a rather inconvenient moment. I know I'll hate this change personally, but frankly I do think it's appropriate. |

Reading this thread, I was panicking at first, til I actually DL'ed the RC (and tried & tried again & again to log in lol :/).
Seems to me that this new pie-menu arrangement only kicks in if you're selecting stuff *on the avatar.* Right-click on any other prim inworld & Edit is right where it's always been. Now, I'm not saying that's not still really annoying, especially when trying to work on an attachment you're wearing, but it's not quite the huge clusterf*ck I was imagining when reading people's comments here... Otherwise, I haven't played around with this RC enough to generate my own list of complaints. Stay tuned for that xD |

I had a bit of warning from the previous RC version that this was coming. It's farking annoying, because I'll be an a posing stand and while trying to go to edit from habit, I'll wind up in appearance, off the stand and it takes time to get back on the stand.
I wish they had put something other than appearance in that slot, if they were going to change it. At first, I thought I had hit on the world's most frustrating bug, not "feature." I'll get used to it, but geeze, 4 years of habit is hard to break. _____________________

I also don't like how drop and detach are next to each other, asking for trouble.

They shoulda done it the other way around. Pull all the edit-object options to the first menu. Then have More... take you to the avatar menu. THAT would be win-win. Really -- so, we'd see the edit pie slice when clicking our avatar directly? I think the idea is so that we can say to a newbie "click on your av and choose 'Edit Appearance'", without them saying "All I see is Edit, Drop, and Detach". Etc. Simplification for the newbs. More clicks for us oldbies when we want to adjust an attachment, but as mentioned above, we can go to edit mode and just click. Frankly, I wish they'd never put the "drop" option there at all. I keep having to clean up attachments people drop in my shop, for example. |

edit menu on other people's objects
05-09-2009 08:28
UGH. and if I click another person's belongings, I can't see details now! Are other people experiencing this? I didn't realize how much I used it until I didn't have it! I went to a friend's new home and wanted to see where their furniture was from- I COULDN'T! I went home and saw a box in my front yard and went to see what griefer left it- I COULDN'T! This is a major problem!

Here's a quick fix:
There are a couple files in your Second Life\skins\default\xui\en-us folder (or substitue en-us for your language) The files is menu_pie_attachment.xml and menu_pie_avatar.xml. The simplest thing to do is to copy the version from the 1.22 viewer and overwrite the copies from the 1.23 RC. But there are a few caveats. You will have to do this every time the viewer is updated, and you may lose any new features added since 1.22 (like ARing avatars) The best fix would be to re-arrange the XML layout of the 1.23 copy to fit the old layout. But that requires some knowledge of XML and the viewer. I'm sure someone could do it. _____________________

They want people to not care about editing. If they succeed, then they will make many people like me not care about Second Life. At all. _____________________

You will have to do this every time the viewer is updated I already have to reset all my damned graphics settings each time the viewer is updated (because the 'reverted' defaults crash my client without fail), so I don't see that as being much of an additional burden. Thanks for the workaround ![]() . _____________________

The pie menu options for people and objects should be as common as possible too, to increase familarisation, especially amounst those of us with sight impairments who may expect the thrird sector down on the right to be edit.
rather than now they are completly different. _____________________

I can't BELIEVE how many times I find myself agreeing with you! ![]() It's illogical to have a segment dedicated to edit for one action (i.e. an object) only to dedicate a segment on a different level to edit an attachment. |
