We are releasing the third iteration of the Viewer 1.22 Release Candidate (RC2). Please help us to identify any new bugs before it becomes an official download for Second Life.

If you have already been using the Release Candidate (RC1), you will now be required to update to RC2 with the latest bug fixes. But, participating in the Release Candidate viewers is completely optional. You may install this viewer side-by-side with the official 1.21 viewer that you normally use.

In RC2, we have repaired some of the most pressing bugs you reported regarding inadvertent black textures on unrezzed objects or avatars. There are also fine-tuned improvements to picking the object under your cursor. A complete list of fixes is available in the Release Notes:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release_Candidate/1.22

We need your help to find crash cases and other feedback! Please visit the Test Viewers page to download the 1.22 RC2 viewer:
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php#download-Testviewers

* * *

Be sure to report new issues at jira.secondlife.com and set the "Affects Version/s" to "1.22 Release Candidate." We can only investigate and solve issues that are reported there.

Sound mixer
12-03-2008 12:18
Hi Ramzi, I urge you not to release 1.22 until the sound mixer is fixed (VWR-10362). It makes it unusable when listening sounds from SL in any high quality setting, for instance when listening via headphones.

Errors installing 22-2
12-03-2008 12:27
I get errors installing this new RC, on WinXP. I get the following error:

Error opening file for writing:
c:\Program Files\SecondLifeReleaseCandidate\app_settings\mozilla\components\xulutil.dll

If I hit "Ignore", I get a LOT more popups for the same kind of error, on various file types (mostly .dll).

works good here on windows vista.
I even have the impression that i have less lag and that textures are loading faster.

This viewer either renders prim attachments too dark or avatar textures too light. I haven't quite found out which of these two exactly...

I'm using a 9600GT card with 180.48 drivers.

Lear, it sounds as if you had a client running in the background while trying to install the new one. I have seen various reports of recent versions not shutting down correctly (so that the secondlife.exe process was still running even though the window was gone). Try opening the task manager or Sysinternals Process Explorer and kill secondlife.exe before the install.

I think it's avatars too light. I had to edit my ambient light settings in Windlight so that I didn't look like I had a light bulb shining right in my face, and the prims I just matched to the clothing layers in 1.21 before loading 1.22 suddenly don't match anymore.

I started a Jira for it here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-10882

Update Required ???????
12-03-2008 20:41
Happen to be using 1.22.0. and although log in page says download REQUIRED update to enter grid. My install will proceed to the grid without downloading the 1.22.2 update.

Was expecting a reminder during login sequence and auto update to be initiated

yah voted - that stuck around since the the last rc. :)

hey a general jira suggestion - how about having search results sort by date updated by default? :) might condense community response 'upwards' a bit, perhaps would help keep from duplicate issues being filed...

Still not usable because of VWR-10469
12-04-2008 01:14
I hoped the RC Viewer is usable now because VWR-10719 'Objects all black till texture slowly loads' is fixed.
But as long group liability info does not display (VWR-10469), it doesn't make much sense.
Oh yes, and the avatar colors are lighter than usual (using a Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT with driver 180.48).
Apart from that, it works fine.

That's actually intended, there was a bug for a while where avatars were rendered too dark, and 1.22 fixes it.

Details in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8012

The good news: prims and avatars with matching textures should actually match without fiddling. The bad news: prim attachments that were "optimized for Windlight" with darkening will now reveal the home-grown corrections.

All seems well running 1.22 RC2 on my late 2008 MacBook Pro with 512MB graphics memory.

First thing I noticed is that graphics settings seemed 'dumbed down' a bit. Release notes seemed to indicate that when viewer detects the 9600M GT graphics, it's defaulting to lower performance settings. Not sure if this is because of issues related to 256MB configurations, or LL just is not familiar with the hardware's capabilities.

In preferences -> graphics I set all sliders to max except draw distance, which was increased to 192m. Frame rates have been averaging 20-30fps since.

Viewer still has a glitch when it comes to texture memory. It defaults to a setting of 256MB. I tried sliding this to 512MB, and the viewer allowed me to do so without error. However upon exiting and restarting the viewer, the setting reverts back to 256MB. Not a big deal on this particular machine, but I understand this issue also applies to Mac Pro's with considerably more VRAM.

Otherwise... so far so good!

BUG: Hovertips in Script Editor Not Appearing

hovering the mouse over coloured text in the script editor isn't generating the pop-up script tips. 'show hover tips' and 'tips on all objects' is turned on in the menu (IF that has anything to do with the tips in scripts, which lord i hope not.)

BUG: CTRL-H opens IM window, not Chat History

if i want to see my im text, i hit the 'communicate' button. when i hit 'ctrl-h' that means i want to see LOCAL CHAT HISTORY, like it always has been.

are we supposed to put these here, or in the jira? isnt... here easier to find? :X

You can probably work around this one. In Advanced->Debug, see what RenderTextureMempryMultiple is, it's probably at 0.5. Wham it to 1.0 and your 512 will probably stick.

First off, I would like to say what I like about this viewer,
Being able to see where your friends are on the mini-map. Not excatly mapping however if one of your friends is in the same sim, you know where they are at.
The downfall here is, technically its still mapping, and this way its mapping without permissions. Should have a permission setting, like a global set in prefs for hiding the color coded dot on the minimap where you just show up as a every-day green one for those paranoid types :-p

Secondly. Kinda hard to even log in when it crashes randomly when just logging in. Sometimes it crashes when "loading world" or right at the end of "loading clothing" just before it actually shows the world.
Sometimes nothing happens at all and sometimes it works without flaw. and when it does, its a very nice update. (missin alot though. but its a start LL)
My problem is this crash glitch cause it happens over and over (oh, another thing I like with this new viewer, no waiting to relog o.O) so I'm online/offline/online/offline/online/etc. etc. you get the idea. A side-effect of this is SL not showing me online to other avatars when I am indeed online and they have permissions to see if I'm online or not. So just thought I would toss out meh two cents for once and see if anybody bites on these bugs and put a report in for me as right now I'm too lazy to do it lol

I didn't get any request to update to RC2, nor was there anything in the blog. I didn't know it was out until I got mail saying a JIRA had been closed because it was fixed in RC2.

This actually went in for a beta several versions back, and then got lost when it went to release.

Well this seems fairly stable so far. Just a shame you still can't see the position of the last selected prim of multiple prims (unlinked) in the edit menu. Hope there's a fix for this soon.

It looks like my epic lag spikes are all but gone. Still a hint of slowdown after teleporting, but nowhere near the epic freezeups I used to see. (>_<;)

I'm also very happy to have been able to remove the touch of gray that I've had to add to a few of the outfits I've bought over the past year. Please don't compromise on that, it looks good now and helps content creators as we can now use the same shaded textures for both the avatar layer and prim attachments of an outfit. (^_^)

Though, textures are still bloody slow and I still find myself "editing" vendors to get the images up in a loaded store. It's like bloody clockwork. The face texture won't load in forever. I right click >> edit >> watch the textures load nearly immediately. I can totally pick and choose the order of which prims will rez first. So, it's not bandwidth, it's selectivity/priority. Whatever is taking priority over nearby texture loading has to give. This world of gray is driving me nutzo. (>_<;)

Thanks Viktoria! I'll have to play with that setting...

Kator - it is a privacy setting I believe. Go look at your friends list, and see if you've got the checkbox for letting your friends see you on the map. It is my understanding that they must have enabled that setting on their end for you to be able to locate them or see them in yellow on the minimap.

Ya know so few people have the Space Navigator, but more people have standard game controllers. It would be just nice if SL supported a standard Xbox 360 controller with out having to fiddle with esoteric settings. With so many games in nearly the past 20 years with first/third person games where gamers have become accustomed to using a game controller in games, you'd think SL would have support for a game controller out-of-the-box already!!
