I'm a part-time Frisbeetarian, and that's the first commandment: never precede any trick with anything more specific than "watch this!" :)

Wow there are a lot of changes in this viewer!... I played with earlier 1.22 versions but wow!
Is there a list of changes/fixes/known issues anywhere i can access?

I instantly found a wildly annoying bug with the build dialog. Try stretching any prim without "stretch both sides" activated.... This causes the opposite side of the prim(the one that should not move at all) to dance all over the place. It does seem to pop back the right place most of the time(but lost packets cause fail).

The entire scene gamma has also changed. All scenes are much much brighter. We're back to washing out light and detailed textures again... =/ You can solve this for me by letting me set windlight setting for my regions. please?

Anyways not whining, just surprised at the big changes so late in the 1.22 RC run.

Edit: Ive read the release notes and don't see mention of anything that would cause these changes. And I only see changes/known bugs for RC 6 and down.

I didn't notice that, but if so... that's good, until they finally give me a WORKING method for saving and restoring day cycles. Or else give me back the damn "nighttime brightness" slider.

Change the parameter to the "--channel" argument on the command line and you can keep using RC6.

The RC7 isn't much better than the RC6 for me. Being a Mac user I'm plagued with constant freezing. RC5 though was perfect. Do you know if this is still available anywhere. I deleted it thinking it was unusable.
What do I change in the following text to get this so it would be usable again...

--channel "Second Life Release Candidate" --settings settings_releasecandidate.xml

Any help is appreciated. I'm really struggling to get a viewer that works for me at the moment!

Alpha in beta?
01-29-2009 12:07
Does anyone else find that the current clients, both release and release-candidate, are really slowed to a crawl by alpha textures?

I find that anytime the view ahead of me has a lot of alpha textures, such as an area of trees or plants, my framerate drops thru the floor. For example I have one area of bamboo around my land - when looking directly at it my framerate drops about 10fps and when you're running at an average of about 15fps that really hurts - SL becomes unusable. I know multiple alpha textures can be demanding but I've never noticed this degree of slowdown before.

I'm using a Mac but my Windows-using friend has the same issue. Anyone else?

Thanks so much for this. I hadn't realised I could revert to earlier versions before :D

With the last RC version we got "Fixed: Sculptie textures have too high a priority in 1.21 causing slow overall texture loading" and this seems to have carried over to RC7.

I think this is a big mistake - I hear what everyone says about slow texture loading (and agree!) but that just needs to be fixed period, downgrading sculptmaps to give faster texture loading is not fixing anything. I thought LL had conceded the main bottleneck with texture loading is transferring them via UDP instead of TCP - why not try fixing that first?

The pretentious reason: when I was at college we were taught that human visual perception works thru 3 main stages - form then colour then texture (meaning surface detail). We recognise things first by shape so why not let us see things in SL that way too? Load sculptmaps first, add the surface colours/textures next.

At the moment we get a fully-loaded texture floating on what looks like a discarded chew-toy until the sculptmap finally kicks in and the shape appears, this seems the wrong way round to me. The previous RC versions, with higher priority for sculptmaps, seemed much better and sculpts held their shape better - in this version when you turn your back all the sculpts turn back to pumpkins again!

Please rethink the sculptmap priority!

wow no pleasing some people.
removing the high priority from sculpties is a great idea based on the fact, everything has textures that needs rezzed and waiting for maybe a few sculpties in the area to rez is just abit stupid if you ask me.... if you want your sculpties to load faster then use the main viewer (1.21.6) ... for me sculptie rezzing hasn't changed from the previous state of rezzing in.. then the earlier versions.

RC7 has some odd behavior
01-29-2009 15:24
when I first loaded it, I was getting odd rendering glitchs. I was able to see through things and what was rendered on the other side of the item, for one frame only. This seems to have gone away after a cold reboot though.

Textures are faster. Thank you.

Every second, it is as if the viewer just stops in its tracks and picks up again after a split second later. This causes a dreaded Rubber banding effect.

If there's only a few sculpties in the area, then there won't be enough for them to slow texture downloads. If there are many, then loading the sculpties first will produce a much better result.

If it doesn't make a difference to you, why are you putting your oar in? The people for whom it DOES make a difference want sculpties loading first.

i just had an odd thing happen about an hour ago. not sure if it's client or server related. i had 2 inventory windows open. clicked the x to close one window, after a short pause and frozen screen, the other inventory window closed instead, and the one i tried to close remained open. haven't been able to replicate it. but the long pause when opening/closing a second window is pretty much every time

Workaround is make sure your chat window is closed - Ctrl-Z seems to work then, but fail if chat is open..

They enclosed the url in bbcode style img tags.

That made their links not show up at all on my system and that happens on other people's systems too.

Workaround is make sure your chat window is closed - Ctrl-Z seems to work then, but fail if chat is open..

not just the chat window, but the chat bar at the bottom needs to be hidden to. seems to also do the same when you hit the delete button on the keyboard rather than the delete button on the pie menu

For myself..it doesn't matter if the chat window/bar is closed...the only way I can get CTRL Z to work is to totally close the prims edit window, then reselect and edit the prim again.

Is the Control Z problem related to Async Keystrokes?

/me bets it's more related to what the viewer thinks has focus.
