The seventh iteration of the 1.22 Viewer, Release Candidate RC7, has been released. Please help us to identify any new bugs before it becomes an official Second Life Viewer download.
If you have been using the sixth Release Candidate (RC6), you will be required to update to RC7. Please keep in mind that participation in the viewer Release Candidate cycle is completely optional. This viewer may be installed along side the official 1.21 viewer.
RC7 includes a fix for a crash occurring on display of textures (LLTextureFetchWorker::decodeImage). As always, release notes can be found at:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release_Candidate/1.22
While we've made many improvements, we still need your help to find crash cases and final feedback as we prepare to release the official 1.22 viewer - very soon! Please download the Release Candidate here and start experimenting:
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php#download-Testviewers
Don't forget to report new issues at jira.secondlife.com, and be sure to set the “Affects Version/s” to “1.22 Release Candidate”. We are only able to investigate bugs that are reported in this way.

Thank You!!! Textures in this iteration load super fast for me. I also like that ALL my settings were saved from RC6. This one is a "keeper". Great work!

I cant install this version, its odd. I can download the installer fine and it does perfectly until it gets to the end and a few files in the mozilla/components/ folder pop up in a dialogue box with 'abort retry ignore'

the raytracing still is not nearly as good as it was.
i use to click the avatar to controll it with the mouse (turn, look up/down)
but when i wear a clickable necklace, i click the necklace which is on the avatar front. so the raytracing ignores the avatar mesh and selects the really small necklace instead.#
that is veeeery annoying

Crashing... and guess what... more crashing
01-28-2009 13:09
Screen just goes black... ,green or red... need to reset my entire system about every time. It stays stable from 1 minute to an hour. Latest Nvidia drivers 182.22. And this is happening sinds this RC-serie.
When are you gonna fix it Linden Labs?

P.S. give us shadows!

SLURLs from Firefox 3 pages are not working in RC 7. They worked fine in RC 6, and a friend reported to me that they were working for her from Firefox 2; so there must be something in the RC that's incompatible with FF3 somehow.

From: Yuriko Nishi the raytracing still is not nearly as good as it was. Yah, at this point I think LL need to just roll back the raytracing code, or else only use it for hover effects (cursor changes, etc) and switch to the old selection mechanism when you actually click on something.

With the last RC version we got "Fixed: Sculptie textures have too high a priority in 1.21 causing slow overall texture loading" and this seems to have carried over to RC7.
I think this is a big mistake - I hear what everyone says about slow texture loading (and agree!) but that just needs to be fixed period, downgrading sculptmaps to give faster texture loading is not fixing anything. I thought LL had conceded the main bottleneck with texture loading is transferring them via UDP instead of TCP - why not try fixing that first?
The pretentious reason: when I was at college we were taught that human visual perception works thru 3 main stages - form then colour then texture (meaning surface detail). We recognise things first by shape so why not let us see things in SL that way too? Load sculptmaps first, add the surface colours/textures next.
At the moment we get a fully-loaded texture floating on what looks like a discarded chew-toy until the sculptmap finally kicks in and the shape appears, this seems the wrong way round to me. The previous RC versions, with higher priority for sculptmaps, seemed much better and sculpts held their shape better - in this version when you turn your back all the sculpts turn back to pumpkins again!
Please rethink the sculptmap priority!

IMHO the silly cache strategy is the problem here - walk a round over an island; if you are back at the start, you will see that the textures where you started are loading slow (and so from the server again)... The same, if you TP to another island: your OWN clothes need to be loaded from 0... damn, doesn't SL cache textures at all?

HUD Edit pos arrow bug fix plz!

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5518Please read Zi Ree's comments as to how to go about fixing the issue with half the position arrows not working. It has been fixed successfully on a 3rd party client and would be wonderful to have full usage again on the RC

I am now able to see textures instead of grey boxes which is great.
I had some issues with some of trees looking like they were broken apart but that was fixed when I relogged.
The only issue I am having that I have noticed and noticed with the last release candidate is that when I click on something it does not let me see who it belongs to or who the creator is. This is annoying especially when I am trying to return prim liter.

Hello, w/ this RC, is it just me or is it brighter? The overall lighting? I uninstalled the temp files and the last RC and installed this one and kept switching through the different suns, even Midnight is not so dark at all.

Good to see you back Ramzi - I still suggest adding the fixes of the Viewer in your post, rather then just a bunch of useless fluff with a link to the hard-to-read information. If you're replacing the blog with this and the Wiki, it would be greatly appreciated if you just put the info here o_O Also looks like rezzing avatars is broken again :/

There's not much new in this one compared to the last one, is there?

Is there a way get the camera to stay further away behind my avatar like in the previous versions? I find it annoying that I only see the back of my av's head on the screen.
The Camera Follow Distance setting in prefs apparently affects only flying.

Is it my imagination, or does camming around kind of "slip" at times with this RC? I've never seen this happen before but it's happened several times since installing RC7. It happens more in laggy areas. When it would normally hesitate and then catch up (sort of like rubberbanding)...now it doesn't always do the catching-up/rubberbanding, thus giving the feeling of "slippage" relative to the mouse moves. Hope this makes sense.

By the way, it's because of things like this that I think it would be nice if we could run previous RC's for comparison purposes, at least for some amount of time.

I want the 1.22 RC6 back
01-29-2009 01:24
Tried the 1.22 RC6 and it was fast(regarding loading of textures, clothes etc.) reliable and very stable, probably the most stable running SL viever i have ever used, it just worked continuously for 9, 10, 11 hours or more. Unfortunately i had to upgrade to RC7 which makes my screen turn black every 15-40 minutes, which forces me to restart my whole system everytime this happens. Gimme a 1.22 release that works as good as the RC6 please

Heck no....the release notes should be authoritative. But I do agree that the release notes have been stunningly incomplete. Of late they've been "here's the major stuff we fixed in this version, go look at JIRA for what's still broken". PJIRA is a wasteland, finding stuff is even more hit-or-miss than in most other issue trackers because there's so much noise. But in my opinion release notes should contain 1) every issue that the release purports to fix 2) every currently acknowledged bug that still exists in the release If 2) is a long list, well, tough. If it's too much pain to list them, then imagine what a pain it is to use the code.
