Prospero - I've always been curious about something... (Its about rolling restarts, so hopefully this is a fair question: )

Probably the single-most frustrating thing about sim crashes & rolling restarts, is the lengthy process of: disconnect.... slowly close the client.... slowly launch the client... log back in. (YMMV depending on your computer setup.)

Is there a technical region why folks can't simply be automatically teleported out to a nearby or random region when a simulator goes down.... or even just before it gracefully goes down? I mean, instead of a complete disconnect that requires re-entry through the login process.

I'm sure if this were possible, you'd be doing it already... but I'm curious either way :)

Heck, I'd be happy with "Home"...

There is an estate tool csomething like "kick all users" or "send all users home".. I agree, that should probably be the last step of the countdown.. sure it might add a minute or two to the shutdown procedure, but I agree that it would be nicer than just finding ourselves disconnected

That is absolutely the bestest, coolest idea I have heard all year! Travis - make a Jira!

What's going on?!
09-25-2008 03:17
Is anything in progress right now? I can't log in at all, my viewer gets to "waiting for region handshake" and then tells me I've been disconnected from the region I'm in. I've tried logging into several different regions and it still won't work. Is anyone else experiencing this?

So, yes, it's technically possible although not trivial to have people teleported home, or to a random region, when the simulator goes down gracefully. (It's not going to be possible every time a simulator goes down, because a crash means that it's not going down gracefully, and while we have some last ditch stuff we do -- e.g. we try to save state in a crash -- the more of that you try to do, the less likely it is that any of it will succeed. Also, some "crashes" aren't even really simulator crashes, but the host dying, and there's nothing we can do in that case.)

We don't do this at the moment, but it's something to think about.

No, please don't assume this... Its simply not true. If it were we would have had moderated groups with the first support for groups, group banlists, command aliases, disconnect/reconnect that does NOT require a client restart (disconnect to login screen) and a host of other obvious features that should have been implimented in the first place.

good idea - check the jira for it, seems fairly obvious so it might already be there in need of more votes, if not, definately add it, if you can figure out how.

I just spent 20 minutes figuring out how to find the mono RC viewer section of the jira only to find that i couldnt see how to actually add a bug report, only find them. Have only ever gotten throguh the jira once and Ive been developing software for 25 years. It's, in a word... rediculous :P

How about Help->Post Bug Report & Help->Post feature Request in the darn client menu. and let the server sort out where to put it. ugh.

If you're having trouble filing issues with the JIRA, please see the following video tutorial:

I like the idea. There have been a few times when I've gotten that 5 minute warning while I was scramble-minded and left going "GAH!!! Where do I go!?!?! Where do I go!?!?!" (^_^)

It would be a bit more comforting if I knew I would be force-TPed home or to a random telehub if home ain't available. That would be tons better than "*bing* gotta relog now". (=_=)

/me searches the jira for stuff to vote for. =^-^=

auto-teleport on sim restart

"Heck, I'd be happy with "Home"..."

Home might be okay, but anywhere else could be problematic. Many leave their AVs on while away or asleep, often in a state of shall we say undress.

Imagine a flood of naked AFK AVs showing up at a hub and then having AR's filed on them.

well, considering they have to reconnect in the same state and are often redirected to a hub if they try it right away, they are bound to show up somewhere in whatever state they left in - peeps actually get undressed to go to sleep? I hang around in the air with the same shorts on ive been wearing for 6 mos :P

Yes, this was - so far as I can tell, a very smooth rollout - my stores have faired much better this time then during any other rollout ive measured as well.

kudo Prospero et al, nice job.

Honestly, I think people are too "AR Happy" concerning nudity. Especially at infohubs. 99% of the time, people have accidentally logged in there, and it's unintended. It's not harrassment, it's not "broadly offensive".. it's just embarrassing. If gambling weren't banned, I'd wager that LL heavily ignores ARs for public nudity at infohubs.

There seem to be something really wrong with this update wrt bandwith usage. I get problems with getting disconnected often, and I am not the only one experiencing this.

I noticed this before the rolling restart. Thought it may have been redirected internet traffic (re: Hurricane Ike and the repairs that need to be done to backbones and the like) clogging things up and slowing stuff down. Or RC2 (which is for another thread, not this one).

Textures taking longer to show and objects to fully rez and the like.

Honestly though, only Prospero and his team have a clue, I would imagine.

What specifically are you noticing that makes you think that more bandwidth is being used?

*DELETED*

Um, oops. My bad. Just upgraded to RC3 and was poking at settings, as I always do, and noticed that I'd did some adjusting that would play around with bandwidth rates and such. I'm still poking around, but I will retract my statement that I have seen bandwidth use skyrocket at this time.

(And go soak my head. :/)
