From: Tod69 Talamasca Hence the term "Farming". Heh- I've encountered many "farmers". Quite pitiful actually. I always thought "games" meant "fun"? Farming is a realization that one can play a game, not for fun, but for a living. Making enough money to support themselves and thus never have a real job. There's a guy out there who wrote a bot, set up 50 computers, 50 accounts of Ultima Online, and unleashed them. As the GMs got smarter and figured out that his bots were bots he retooled them, making THEM smarter and more cunning to avoid the GMs (at one point when a GM logged in, they'd 'say' "aw crap, need to go to the bathroom" and log out). The less he had to do to keep all 50 of them logged in the more time he had to go do whateverhewantedto. The GMs got smarter, he retooled, they got smarter, and now...when a GM enters the area, the bot sends a text message to his cell phone. He runs over and answered the GMs questions himself (particularly "what color is this wand?" A computer program is incapable of knowing what color it is, because it doesn't know where on the screen it is, and color is highly subjective: where does "pink" end and "brown" begin?).

What you don't seem to comprehend is, SL isn't going anywhere anytime soon. If it does, it will be because LL simply can't get their act together. Them deciding to ban gambling is just that, their decision. Nobody *made* them do it. It's no different than any other company instituting any new policy. In fact, by them doing this now, they very well may have prevented an *actual* law from being drafted some time in the future that *would* regulate what goes on in SL. So I applaud them, and will continue to enjoy my SL, while it still functions (on rare occasions). You are free to whine and throw your fit if you like. Have fun with that.

So damned SICK of corporate B.S.

From: Gisela Vale It isn't for me. It's for everyone. If I win, so do you.
The information that I'm picking up on is the corporations were complaining loudly they were getting NO traffic because of the casinos. Yes the casinos were jam packed most all the time. Corporations do not realize their own traffic problems are due to the fact no one really wants them here. People are here to do their own thing - if they want to be sold on some corporation's advertising, they will do it in RL.
Now that the casinos are gone, what will corporations blame their lack of traffic on next? The former casino people aren't frequenting the corporate sims. Are you?
What is the only other industry in SL that jam packs AV's in their sims? The sex industry. The cybering will never be regulated, but you can bet any pornographic depiction whether it is AV simulated sexual acts, graphic pornographic distribution, or paraphernalia, it will be banned next. The sex industry in SL might even be bigger than the casino industry was. Pornography like gambling is regulated or illegal i RL because of it's huge revenue potential. If LL still has the LindeX, LL will still be liable for processing pornography related proceeds through PayPal and credit card companies. And the only reason for that is because $L is traded for USD through the LindeX.
Do your own map searches and find the corporate sims. I counted only six AVs online at any given time in the IBM sims. IBM has 33 sims!
Word is, that IBM is either committed to or is going to spend $10 million here. LL is gonna need it. I just hope they get it before the qui tam. Whoever successfully files a qui tam action will be set for life, so I fully expect that to happen.
This is not about saving gaming or the sex industry per se. Like it not, both of those industries are the backbone of SL's economy, along with land values. These three industries are what has allowed SL to grow. Without them, the only big money left will be corporate interests and I don't see any of you falling all over yourselves to support them and keep their money here.
This is about keeping SL for the benefit of us ALL. This is a virtual world and we need to keep it that way by keeping out RL laws and regulations. The only way we can is to demand that LL ditch the LindeX. This doesn't remove USD value from the $L, it just removes LL's liability for it.
We all know that LL has NOT wanted to or can't afford (?) to upgrade their servers. Many don't realize it, but the huge number of money transactions from the casinos put incredible stress on the servers. There was simply no way for LL to introduce voice into the grid while that continued. The voice component is of the most value to corporate interests for meetings and classes. Lot's of people don't mind it, a few even like it, but most can do without voice, particularly since they already feel it's been a trade-off for grid performance. It is evident with the current grid conditions that even without the casinos in operation, the grid remains fraught with problems.
It's already a documented fact the law makes NO difference regarding LL's liability for gambling/gaming or the sex industry and a solution to that end has been provided.
Corporate introduction into SL is a mistake. Neither they nor LL fully realize it at this time. The corporations have the big money though and they will get their way as long as we remain divided.
We really are a primitive group of people in our SLs - it's either all about the money, or it's my interests and not yours that are important. We are certainly a long way from self government if we can't support each other.
I want to build, script, buy land, game, sell things, and gamble if I feel like it. How cool would it be to actually make real money here doing some of those things. I do not want to be a part of the sex industry or be involved in the role playing with beating, gagging, raping, and slaves and all.
The thing is, I can do all that I want and I DON'T have to participate in the other. But just because I don't like it doesn't mean you can't. So it isn't hard for me to support your right to it.
I don't understand why it's so hard for you to support others. *shrugs* From what you are saying, they might as well close down the thread about LL being acquired. They've already sold out, and sold us out along with it.

I am receiving the same information as Gisela has, and from a source that is close to Philip Linden himself. I was very angry about this myself when I heard.
Dear Corporations:
You guys are a bunch of idiots! You aren't getting traffic because people don't know you are here! You guys set up your sim, and run your initial grand opening celebration, then you disappear never to be seen or heard from again. You don't interact with your community at all. When your representatives DO log in, which is rarely, they don't ever leave the island. This means that no effort is being done to go out and meet people.
SL is not like RL. In RL, you open a business, put an ad in the yellow pages and it's all systems go. You might have to advertise on television a small bit, an ad in a newspaper, etc, and you'll be in operation in no time.
In SL though, you have to do some REAL work. You go out and meet people, participate in your community, participate in some of these charity events, hold events of your own. But you don't get to just open up a sim, sit back, and HOPE people flock to it, then blame another group when they don't. What advertising do you use? Cause we sure as hell don't see your advertisements in any of the SL newspapers, or hear them on any of the SL radio stations or see you on any of the websites that do advertising for SL related businesses.
Yes, yes, I know. There were rl companies that operate in SL that promised you they'd promote your sim, and get you rl advertising value from it, and they'd do this, they'd do that, but guess what? They DIDN'T! Are you listening PONTIAC???
You aren't getting traffic because you aren't advertising, you offer no real service or product to the SL community, and you aren't staying involved in the SL community. No ban on gambling, or sex, or anything else is going to change that fact. Only YOU can change that!
But instead, you corporations have chosen the blame somebody other than yourselves route. That's so much easier to do isn't it? It still won't improve your numbers any because you aren't doing what you should be doing. There are how many thousands of private island sims now? And you expect people to be able to find yours how? Numbskulls. It's all about PR and marketing. Two things that many of us in SL are good at, no matter what kind of business it is. Maybe you guys should either hire someone that knows what they're doing or get your own keisters into SL to figure it out, instead of punishing large groups of people because you aren't getting the traffic numbers that you want.
It's a shame too because some of you have some really neat stuff, such as the NBA with their Orientation Island, and their free throw basketball courts. That place is COOL, yet you get no traffic because of no marketing and no events. Pontiac has a racetrack which is also kinda cool. But again... no marketing. *shrugs*
I doubt any of the corporations here have read this, but just in case.... if you guys really want to improve your traffic ratings, I do know enough to be able to tell you how to do that. A lot of us do. Feel free to shoot me a message.
It is a true abomination that you guys decided to ruin SL for thousands of us because YOUR SL wasn't going the way you wanted it to, when all you really had to do was find someone that knows what they're doing and ask for help.
For the rest of SL out there, this choice had nothing to do with law. What we were doing was perfectly legal. It had to do with corporations and what they wanted. No, this won't be the only thing outlawed. Give it another month or two and see what comes under fire next.

I would say to the thread starter the question is rather strange, because the L$ supply is adjusted based on growth (if they havent done that L$ would have been trading at 80-150 to a USD today), during recent year LL have increased L$ to the market to keep the price stable, should the demand decline LL will decrease the supply to keep it stable at 266/277... so no i'm not concerned about L$ value, but what im concerned about is the economy the land and so on.

A real Linden?
08-18-2007 09:01
Make one... If the Linden is fictitious, in that there isnt a real one... Make one.. Copyright it, make lots.. say using gold as a medium.. sell them legally... quite what one would achieve, i have no idea.. but if the opportunity exists.. one should consider it. Lets suppose you do.. create something like a gold token.. you call it a Linden.. you make it worth something by using gold, or platinum..( very very expensive) make it worth the current price of a Linden Sim.. say $1500 dollars.. do it legally. copyright it, pay your taxes in your country.. You have created something that might sell, trade, ie one could take a real Linden in payment for something.. we are not talking about money... its a token.. a symbolism.. no different than a diamond ring.. or anything really.. a washing machine ...laughs.. but simply because its made from something with undeniable value.. it will retain that.. always be worth something...

It's not only the lindens but atleast they as opposed to The "Federal" Reserve manage to handle inflation... from wikipedia about USD: "Federal Reserve Notes are fiat currency, which means that the government is not obligated to give the holder of a note gold, silver, or any specific tangible property in exchange for the note." Personaly i'm far more concerned of the value of USD than i am of the value of L$.

And so it would go on..
08-18-2007 09:39
now you have created a token with value... simply because it is made of a valuable material.. every one made gets a hallmark.. since thats how gold/silver etc work.. and more importantly its date too.. so now one has something relating to a real life medium, with value that can be traded in specific relation to its name, even though the fictitious linden, is completely seperate.. not related physically.. ie a ford is car or a water crossing...
ive touched this before.. whats in a name? who cares, if the the money is sound..how do you make it sound? make from something of value.. the colour of your money doesnt care what you are called.

and on...
08-18-2007 10:00
In fact, one could determine what a real Linden is... that would take enough folks to come up with a design thats agreeable.. by poll perhaps. From that point on.. until it becomes redesigned again every Linden made physically must meet the defined rules.. ie made of gold, hallmarked, the specific shape and design.. the gold quantity.. what was fictititious becomes real.. of value... It will bypass the fictitious Linden.. almost certainly, since it has known and marketable value. It wouldf become worth more than the the fictitious Linden, just because it is real and physical.. ok.. so SL could try to negate it by not allowing it to be used in payment.. only fictitious Lindens..or design and market its own.. but that would make it even more valuable.. since isolation of valuable material simply makes it more sought after.. If it were made in a particularly difficult to replicate way.. ie not like a diamond can be made by compression..so a particular source of gold for example. like Welsh gold.. laughs,, i should be making some right now.. http://www.welshgoldplc.co.uk/pages/faq/index.htmlBut how could I prove my ring was Welsh gold? All our Pure Welsh gold carries a unique fingerprint. This is a special chemical ratio which cannot be duplicated and enables an specially equipped, independent laboratory to verify the origin of the gold.
