It looks wonderful to me so far. The only problem I have encountered seems to be that the way Draw Distance works now it appears to only have half the range. What I used to see at 256m I now have to set to 512m to see.

looks great. crashed after about 3hrs(3gigs ram).

I have pretty serious issues with objects and other things disappearing and not coming back (like half of buildings, sim water, etc). I think it's related to culling. Even teleporting to a different location in the same area doesn't bring them back. Only a relog will do it. Bummer. I'm loving the new release of this, but it's definitely not ready for primetime yet.

One thing I noticed on textures that are washing out in afternoon sun. Tinting them from white (255) to gray (about 200) makes them look about like they do without Windlight.

yah, see if at nighttime you experience a lot of 'alpha echoes' in semi-transparent materials... most of my 'skylab' is like this and picks it up pretty well...

also yah, i agree some sort of culling process (set to 1023 instead of 1024?? or 0-inclusive?;) is cycling in-screen textures and contributing to my 'alpha-echo' effect... maybe not everyone's seeing that yet.

p.s. only one 'fullbright' object of mine seems to be appearing 'off' (not complete 'off', just meaning 'not looking quite how i'd expect a full-bright object to look')... but i dunno, for now i can live with it and see how it rides out... the 'alpha echoes' though seems serious (if only 'seriously disconcerting :)

I am getting 50% less fps wth UHQ and when i let it to low i jump back to normal fps. This bad, does this mean you have to have a quad core running these settings. Gesh!

My frame rates are probably 20% higher with Windlight, although I've not been anywhere with more than a couple of people. Looks amazing too, just need to get those glitches fixed. But then, that's the whole point of a First Look - it's not supposed to be ready for release.

Well, thanks for being so patronising. I'm on Ultra. So maybe I should YELL a little and TALK DOWN at you, too? :) ON ULTRA QUALITY MY FRAME RATES ARE 20% HIGHER. Clear now?

I wasn't saying you didn't know what you were talking about (although...), I was merely stating what my experience was with the new Windlight, exactly like you were.

I'll say it once more. When I put it on the Ultra setting, I see higher frame rates than I saw with the standard viewer with all settings nearly or fully maxed out. That is all.

Yes, I'm on Linux, but I'm comparing it to Linux. On the same machine. And to be honest, I no longer care what your frame rates are. Ok?

Clear enough?

This is the first time that I've had a serious look at Windlight. The day lighting makes things appear awkward but for the night hours, it's perfect.

You can always tweak the advanced sky settings if the default ones don't suite your tastes.

Go to World> Environmental Editor> Advanced Sky.

I understood. Stephen wasn't comparing his machine with other machines, he was comparing the performance of the two viewers on the same machine, his machine.

I'm getting a smoother performance with Windlight (ultra), too.

I absolutely love this, but it now creates another problem, albeit a nice problem: Builds and textures look different in each viewer, so do you make your work look as great as possible for the regular viewer, or Windlight? Doing either results in a compromised look in the other viewer. Decisions, decisions....

I think Usagi wants to know what that machine happens to be; how much RAM, what graphics card etc? Translation; "Post the specs please".
And precisely what those frame-rates were; after all, a 20% increase in frame-rate could be 6 fps instead of 5 =P

I was just pointing out that to suggest that no one can understand Stephen's post is not correct. I understand Usagi wanted more information to make more detailed comparisons, and perhaps the confusion stems from Stephen quoting Usagi in his reply, but he was making a simple understandable qualitative comparison of performance between the two viewers on his machine.

If it's of any use to Usagi, or anyone else, I'll post my details:

2 x 7800GTX, 680iLTSLI (not using SLI config - have been running SL on one card), 4GB RAM, Core 2 Q6600, Vista.

For both viewers I have all graphics options maxed out, 512m2 draw distance, and in a stand-alone sim with no avatars present. Although I do get a higher recorded FPS in the regular viewer (Regular = 30-50 FPS; Windlight = 20-40FPS), the 'experience' seems smoother with Windlight.

Yesterday I must have crashed 10 or more times throughout the day, and I suspect it's a Vista compatibility issue - I very seldom crashed with XP. I'm going to use Windlight all day today to do some building to see if stability is any different. I'll let you know how I get on.

well of course it is silly? thats why we at doing this testing to start with. Is my point. His assumption was more general speaking.

Another thing to report. A friend of mine has an ATI X1950 card. When she has the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) panel applet running, her SL looks like it's running in 256 color mode, and her framerates even on the lowest settings are miserable. When she disables CCC and then runs SL, it works pefectly, but she says she's not able to access her antialiasing settings along with the other advanced card settings.

Avatar faces have a very dark, overly contrasted or deeply shadowed look, unless they are directly facing a light source. A friend also complained about the same problem.

Water looks fantastic!

also, how do I view frame rates?

Much of it looks really nice, but my trees look awful. Actually any prim that not facing the sun, or god forbid is edge on to the sun is almost black.. The "direct lighting" from the sun is a bit too much.. It looks nice on a building at sunrise or sunset, but Avatars and plants look really strange.. Perhaps there are settings I can work to improve this. But the defaults have this problem.. I will play with them a bit when I get home tonight.

The water and sunrise/sunset are very pretty, but the prim lighting issues ruin it for me.
