Release notes:
From: someone
PLEASE NOTE:
* Everything you do with the First Look viewer affects your Second Life account!
** First Look Viewers are test versions of the Second Life viewer
** These test viewers connect to the live grid
* These viewers allow you to test new features in your everyday Second Life
** Please be aware that things might be buggier than normal

The re-release of atmospheric rendering for beautiful skies and immersive environments!

Main Features:
* Physically accurate atmospheric rendering and lighting
* Animateable day cycles
* Vastly improved realistic water with reflections and glimmer
* "Glow" as new object attribute
* Avatar Impostoring, which can speed up crowded scenes tremendously
* A new cleaned-up, easy to use Graphics Preferences tab with simple and advanced options for performance/quality settings

Misc. Rendering optimizations:
* Faster, more reliable occlusion culling - occluded regions are discovered instantaneously, eliminating random bad frames due to the camera moving too quickly
* No geometry transform overhead on region crossing - results in region crossings being slightly smoother
* Faster frustum culling - less time is spent determining what's visible, thus giving better overall framerates
* No copy-to-texture for ripple water - objects under water are rendered to texture at half resolution, resulting in better overall framerates
* Faster sky updates - the non-WindLight (aka no-shader) skies update quicker - even faster than the pre-WindLight skies!
* Single pass shiny - making an object shiny will no longer require it to be rendered twice, which results in virtually free shiny functionality from a performance standpoint
* Single pass terrain - the terrain is no longer drawn in two passes, which, from a performance standpoint, results in virtually free high detail terrain for shader friendly cards (See the System Recommendations at http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php)
* Improved object update code (less work for the CPU) - attachments are no longer added to the active list, which improves performance in crowded areas
* Better scheduling of Avatar LOD (Level of Detail) updates - Avatar LOD is now calculated every 16 frames as opposed to every single frame, which removes redundant work
* Better Avatar culling through more accurate bounding boxes - Avatar bounding boxes now match their current animation, resulting in more optimized culling of avatars that are not visible in the frame
* Better tree rendering (70% fewer matrix operations, no reliance on GL matrix stack) - results in improved performance for tree rendering
* Trimmed unused state in LLDrawable, LLSpatialGroup, LLOctree, and LLFace - results in memory savings
* 16-bit index buffers are now used instead of 32-bit buffers - improves memory bandwidth for rendering geometry

* For more information, see: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/WindLight

The Graphics tabs in Preferences have all been consolidated onto just one tab with Windlight features incorporated into it. Oh yea, did I forget to mention that Reflections are included as well (well, water reflections anyways, if you want dynamic reflections on objects, you still need to do that in debug settings)? :D

They did away with user independent settings for tweaking the sky. My best guess is the old WindLight tweak UI will be given to estate owners. Mainland will remain uniform and look however LL sets it.

First impressions so far, looks great, they got rid of the problem with WindLight causing things to look incredibly washed out when its noon time.

No, they are still there, under World > Environmental Settings > Environmental Editor

So far - very impressed. The original windlook I tried was far too slow - this looks great.

Ahh, ok, I see it now. I'll put up some WindLight screenshots, once I find a good spot and tweak some settings.

Edit: Hmm, looks like turning on Dynamic Reflections in Debug Settings doesn't work like it used to. Any object with shininess on looks quite fubared when you turn it on and doesn't reflect anything.

I'm not getting the same dark spots you are, Stephen. You have the latest graphics drivers installed, right?

Mmm, purdy :)

I get the dark marks, to some degree, whenever I move. The holes in the landscape are caused by the occlusion detection correctly determining that the terrain would be hidden by a structure, however the structure that would be there is beyond the draw distance.

Does this mean,

If I have a high end graphics card with 512mb video memory I can dump the old SL viewer for this new "WindLight" viewer? Will I still be able to build things with this new viewer?

It's the same viewer, except how it draws things is a bit different, and some of the settings have changed. Everything else is exactly the same (build dialogs, chat, friends, etc)

The new water effects on ultra settings are amazing! I'm surprised I was able to run with graphics set to ultra but performance is quite good. Avatars and prims are lit much better than in the first windlight viewer. It still seems a bit overly contrasty but not nearly like it was. The new glow effect is very nice. All in all a huge improvement from the first test.

The only problem I noticed was that after flying around with my camera a bit, some roof prims vanished (not sure they were there to begin with actually). I asked someone using the regular viewer to check and see if they were there or if it was just me. It was just me.

But that water! drool

I'm getting higher framerates when in Fullscreen mode, which is a first. On top of that, going into Wireframe mode doesn't drop my framerates into single digits. In some situations, I actually get better framerates in that mode.

I don't know what they did but I'm getting better framerates with the First Look viewer than the current release candidate (I made sure the graphics were the same, which was basically the High quality setting).

I get the feeling LL may very well be able to bring out both Havok4 and WindLight at the same time in the next major version release. Looks very promising.

Awesome from what i saw, but the Viewer is crashing all some Minutes :(.

Well it`s still the "first" release after month of waiting...and there`s much done in that break.

I'm just impressed, and my chin is still somwhere on the Floor hehe.

Found one of the first glitches:

Some objects and avatars are showing up as a pixelated reflection... eventhough they're not in the water and it isn't a relfection, but hte object itself.

EDIT: It's not a glitch, but a performance enhancement feature, my bad.

Brenham Beale, the pixelated avatar is a cause of Avatar Impersonators. You need to go into your graphics preferences and set Avatar Detail higher. If it's already all the way up and people are still pixelated when that close to you, it certainly is a bug.

whew!! okay, and i didn't even get to try out the new RC yet... so it looks like the 'windlight rc' comes after the 'declared rc' from earlier today... (no prob lindens, but want to be sure! any probably conflicts between the two??)

p.s. OOO OOO OOOOOOO!!! okay, i'll say this - don't attempt much more than whatever 'recommended settings' it comes up with (i'm on an older i/emac, 64meg ATI card, so i'm bucking rather low)... but omg, something already very luscious about nighttime here.) something to note, when i was trying to right-click up my own piemenu with my floating nametag, i was clicking thru... i'll try to register that on jira.

but ooo wow - it'll take a little adjusting but this already looks a -lot- better than i previously anticipated.) (as i say i'm on a low-end machine, so the previous previews looked a lil' - 'gamey' shall i say... this to me actually looks like the gooey sweetness everyone's been raving about. ;)) and gee i didn't even need to upgrade... all the sweeter!!

p.s. strange occassional texture flashing (one by one across my build), but only while the client was in the background of my email, so i dunno - probably to be expected.

p.p.s some graphics echos upon rotating... reporting... but omg, so far really neato gorgeous. i'm sure the fine details will get worked out.

p.p.p. s.... LOL. omg... have you ever played led zeppelin's 'in the light' at the break of dawn?? :)) (if you have... you know what i mean!!!;)

omg... you can actually pull it off with windlight. :)) WOW!! :))

...pixelated avatar is a cause of Avatar Impersonators. You need to go into your graphics preferences and set Avatar Detail higher....

Doing that did work, although I find it odd that Avatars that are closer get impersonated while others much farther away don't get impersonated.

These Avatar Impersonators remind me of old school 16-bit RPGs though.

Cue the Final Fantasy battle theme! It's Garn as RedXII!

I tried it and it gives my a very bad framerate...but it looks beautiful, and it hasn't crashed yet. I already took some pics.

That's a known bug/problem, mostly with ATI cards.

If you go back to the regular viewer and check "Avatar Vertex Program" you should have the same problem (along with possibly very corrupted/twisted avie shapes).

I have pretty serious issues with objects and other things disappearing and not coming back (like half of buildings, sim water, etc). I think it's related to culling. Even teleporting to a different location in the same area doesn't bring them back. Only a relog will do it. Bummer. I'm loving the new release of this, but it's definitely not ready for primetime yet.

One thing I noticed on textures that are washing out in afternoon sun. Tinting them from white (255) to gray (about 200) makes them look about like they do without Windlight.
