The crazy part about this service is that everything is stored on a private database. So you are basically paying $1000L to give this person ALL YOUR PRIM/SCULPTY parameter data that can be used to recreate your items via script. On top of 'backing up your builds' onto this persons private database, there is some unmentioned ceiling/limit as to how much can actually be backed up.

Now i am not trying to slam this person or call them thief, but this screams WARNING - UNSAFE - WARNING - UNSAFE - to me.

This is not like Second Inventory, which backs up your SL inventory locally. This literally puts all your builds into the control and ownership of someone else.

It will be interesting to see how long this service goes on before it hits a hiccup.

I will not be using this service. If i want to back up my prims, I'll send them to an alt, or use a back up service that deposits all the data on to MY computer, not a database accessible by a stranger and anyone they choose to allow.

Would you?

I am going to invite the creator to come explain the product in better detail and why his database should be trusted with our builds.

No, me either. Not saying the person who created this service is unscrupulous, but it does seem like a bad idea to have one's creations on someone else's server.

I've actually thought about doing a service like this for object creators. Some offline backup system where subscribers could poke a bot (that I'd write) and tell it which objects you want it to back up.

The technical parts of doing this aren't that difficult but there's so much paranoia about bots (!quit !Quit !QUIT!!!!11!) and IP theft and such that I'll probably never do it..

Why not make it a inventory back up system that backs up the data locally with encryption?

Of course people can break encryption but it does put a layer IP protection that will stop the gross majority of users from ever thinking twice about it

I wrote a script a while back that is somewhat similar to this. When dropped on a prim, it outputs a duplicating script to local chat. I sometimes use its output during speed builds (it's amazing to watch that little plywood box transform into a 10 meter tall spiral staircase in about one second.) Maybe I should sell my script so people could save the output scripts to their local hard drive in order to recreate their prims.

I can't believe anyone would trust this service. I know I wouldn't.

And as you pointed out, I wonder what the Gorean Bitch Escorts have to do with it.

At least your content is "backuped" [sic] every week so it's impossible for you to lose your data.

It seems like it's not for backing up scripts or anything, just primitive params which are public information people probably store without asking already.

I do not think anyone mentioned backing up scripts. If you want to back up your scripts, Copy & Paste away.

This tool backs up your PRIM/SCULPTY parameters into a private database that you can then restore the prims from.

That private database is not on your machine and you have no control over who has access to the database containing your inventory of builds/prims.

i do wonder what/if there will be any more stringent enforcement over questionable services and devices, with the lab/xStreet merger (and onRez merger/closure). will the lab be able to be more forceful and quicker with dmca requests, now that maybe perhaps the 'carrier' is now one company?? (out of the pros&cons of the mergers, this is something i've been wondering if it will be a big 'pro' for content-creators.)

How is this different from any of the bazillion of the offsite backup places out there that exist in first life? That is, what's to say that this isn't actually being done with the best of intentions by someone who has the capacity lined up and the expertise to pull it off?

We already have that with second inventory or careful use of the copybot: Just add GPG. http://www.gnupg.org/ It doesn't care what the underlying data is, it'll encrypt it.

Yes, and more choices would be better for the market that right now, Second Inventory owns.

First Life?

The difference between First Life offsite back up versus some private resident in SL?

Well for one, i can sue a private company for a number of reasons, like my data being pilfered or used.

And no one said this isn't being done with the best of intentions.

This person may be more honest than George Washington, but maybe they have a coding partner, or a relationship partner who also has access to the database. I do not want to worry about "who has access to this private persons database". There are a bajillion other positive and negative variables related to something like this. No matter what however, the resulting effect of any of the negative variables completely out weigh any possible positives.

That's true, and I definitely agree with you that more choice would be better. It's sad that paranoia mostly killed copybot given that it had more potential for good than the one evil scenario everyone flipped out about.

What I meant to say is there's no reason to reinvent the wheel when it comes to cryptography when there's already some well-audited, easy-to-use, military-grade options readily available. When it comes to crypto, you really want something that's open and accessable with a large user and developer base. You don't want something somebody whipped up over the weekend without having any outside review deciding that their implementation is "good enough."

Mostly because selling a bot means a greater level of customer service. Doing just a service would be an SL-only interaction.

Without selling the bot, there's no serious need for encryption.

This might be a good way to have your content stolen, but an even better way would be to have your prim data stored in plain text somewhere such as, for example, these forums.
