Time for some advice from people. How would you leave SL? Would you settle your affairs and be decently slow about it all? Or would you leave suddenly, in a kind of "Mayerling" way, fast and impetuously?

Sell off what I can and poof no more avie. It's difficult decision coz it really gets to be a whole life with pictures and "looks" and styles. I guess we fall in love with ourselves and its a hard thing to do - just go and not return. _____________________

So true.... I would have to do the quick tearaway, like a bandage. I lost my original avatar and had to make this new one. I still long for the old one when I'm hanging out with old friends. I still have all of the tattoos I made unde rthat name and a lot of pics and movies from the old avie, I keep it all for the the memories. _____________________

If/when that time comes, I would sell what I could to get back some of the money I put into SL (but not the stuff I made, only stuff I purchased that was transferable, my creations would go with me), then exit without a sound, no fanfare no big announcement, just gone.
I have done it in other "games" and would do the same thing here. (the only ones who would know, would be those I consider friends, and they already know how to contact me outside of game)... I mean real friends, not someone I might say hi to once a month. (people I can sit and talk to and listen to, much like I would in the real world if we could) So... someday... I just won't be here anymore. _____________________

If i would quit, i would just stop using it (no more logins).. (leave al non owned groups)
future is open, so maybe i would return once in a while (few times a year) to catch up with updates on the grid.. so not canceling the account.. (also inventory will be kept that way, you never know when you might need it again, for yourself or someone else) |

Hm.
With my involvement so deep here, it would go down a couple of ways. A) Painfully slowly, as I have 49 regions to deal with and several hundred residents, should ever I need to do something else for whatever reason, or B) "Officer, he was crossing the street when the crocodile popped up out of the manhole, I don't think Des quite knew what hit him" _____________________

Like others I would sell off what I could. Then I'd let the few people I'm close to know I was leaving. Probably would do it all in one day.

Sell off what I can and poof no more avie. Pretty much this, except I'd have to say G'bye to people as well. Oh, also I'd probably head to a welcome area or HI and start handing out all my transfer outfits.. that'd be kinda fun. _____________________

Personally,I would make like ten goodbye threads spread over the course of a week. Never really explaining why I was leaving. Then I would send personalized notecards to everyone on my friend's list. Then I would throw myself a goodbye party and then come back a week later.
Most likely though, just leave. I might say goodbye to a few people, just because I wouldn't want people to worry about me. _____________________

If I decided to leave right now, it would be because I didn't have enough time to log on for some reason or other. That would mean a slow fadeout or sudden disappearance, depending on what the situation was. I'm really not sure. I'd try to close up shop and sell things off, but sometimes there isn't time for RL so I'm afraid my formal goodbye from SL would suffer.

Same as I did once before ... just stop logging in to SL and maintain contact with "real" SL friends through email/MSN.
This is why I don't have a premium account or own land - no commitments Inworld. This is also why I always give out my email to those I'd like to stay in touch with under such circumstances. I think it's cruel to just disappear from the lives of those you care about / who care about you. |

I know this is not what you meant, but when I read the thread title, I had a mental image of my avatar being dragged away by two husky guys, each holding a foot, while her fingers etched divots in the ground...
I can't imagine voluntarily leaving SL for good, with no possibility of returning, except as a new account. When I nearly left SL before, it was somewhat of a fadeout. I'd probably sell my land, sell or give away my transferable stuff, and park my avatar at a welcome area so that if I *did* return, it wouldn't be in the middle of somebody's bedroom! _____________________

In terms of the present and near future, the only reason I'd leave SL would be because I was forced to through circumstances beyond my control or through not being able to log on or something. So that would probably be sudden since I'd have no choice in the matter.
I do have a sort of notion that I will leave SL after I've completed 10 years here (7 years to go!) In that case I will probably say all my goodbyes and maybe have a farewell party, then I will hand all my belongings to an alt for safe keeping and sell my land. Whether I could actually bring myself to cancel my account when the time comes, I have no idea. _____________________

Like an old soldier I'd just fade away... unless I suddenly got kicked out.

I've always been one to simply fade away quietly, but when owning land and other financial interests in SL, it's a little difficult. Things would need to be settled before I faded away.

"Departure should be sudden."
--Benjamin Disraeli But as long as my stipend is more than my premium fee I'm staying. I did wrestle with killing Ray when the shit hit the fan for me but I had experienced enough loss at the time in RL. Plus I've got hundreds of dollars of no transfer stuff in my inventory. When the time comes, I will send IMs to the three people I care about and just stop logging in. _____________________

I think you can leave a will, I'd do that, I have a heap of awesome textures I've bought just recently, someone should have them.. I could just up and leave pretty easy though as much as I love it all.

How would you leave SL? Slowly or Suddenly? I would crash and burn dramatically, loudly and in a blaze of scandal. _____________________
